Thinking about potentially removing a tree from our backyard. Anyone have a rough estimate of how much it costs, and recommended companies/

Depending on the size it could be $500-1k or more...it totally depends on the tree.

We had 12 trees taken down of all sizes and it cost $7k.

Get quotes. Especially if this is not a must do now type of thing. We have had a massive amount of trees removed from our property. Last trees we had taken down, we had quotes that differed by over $1k. I had other shrubs removed and my quotes varied by $3k for the exact same work. Landscapers/tree removal has a wide variation and if you shop long enough you will be able to get low prices.

Re: Tree Removal

I had a large tree removed in my backyard, with the stump grinding. It cost $500 plus tax.

Also, ask your neighbors if they want it done too. Tree guys might give a discount if they are coming for several houses.

I just had clients who removed a large tree (very large) from the side of their house. They got 3 estimates ranging from $1800 to almost $3K.

Re: Tree Removal

I am in NJ, and my neighbor had hired a tree person. While they were there I asked if they wanted to do some of my trees too and what would it cost. I had one tree about 8 inch diameter and that tree alone cost 300, no grinding, but it was ok for me as it is in a rock line, so I could easily hide the stump within the rocks. I then had them remove what I would call twig trees, or trees with four inch or less diameter. There were about fourty of them. For that, plus some pruning cost an additional $500. It was the remainder of the day worth of work. The owner of the company said that since his men were already here, and that he only had a half day of work for them with my neighbor, I lucked out. Normally they charge a fee for bringing different types of heavy equipment from their location to my location. But since they saved on gas, and saved on having to move to a new job site, and did not have something else lined up for the afternoon that particular day, they were happy to pass on the savings to me. He said if I was a new customer, the work would have been $2000-$2500. I was beyond thrilled. Edit to add, he also mentioned the most inexpensive time to have tree work performed is December because most people don't think of doing tree work then, so hey give the best discounts in the winter. So if you can hold off until then, you might get better rates. Or ask if they have winter rates when you get quotes now.

Re: Tree Removal

I recently had one large tree, one medium tree, 2 small dead leylands, and unsplit wood removed from behind my house (with some trimming as well). I had estimates for $3,500, $2,500, and $1,250! (All companies were insured)
