Tree Removal- from the Town?

We need to take some trees down on our property... they are along the edge of the road and reach into the electric lines... someone mentioned that the town might come and remove them... i went onto Brookhavens web site, but does anyone know who we are supposed to call? What department??

Re: Tree Removal- from the Town?

Well every town is different but in my town (Huntington township) they "own" / are responsible for the trees at the edge of our property by the road.
We had a tree that needed trimming very badly and my MIL called them everyday for about a month until they came and did it.

I'd call the town, they prob wont take down a tree in less it's dead and in danger of falling but they should trim it up.

If you want it removed you will prob. have to pay a service.

Call the Department of Waste Management of Highway Department - they both do removal services, and should be able to help you, Cortney!

If they are growing into the lines, LIPA may come and trim them if the town won't take them down.

Re: Tree Removal- from the Town?

Thanks Everyone!

Dept of Highway is in charge of the trees... they said they will only take the tree down if it is dead... i asked what if it is half dead and tree limbs are in danger of falling? She laughed at me and said she would send me some forms. She also told me since the trees go into the powerlines to call LIPA

I called LIPA they will be here in 72 hours and will cut the trees down to clear the lines, then a tree service can come in a finish removing them...

So i called 3 tree services and I am waiting for price quotes... i hope this isnt too expensive!

DH all of a sudden really cares about what the outside of our house looks like and wants perfect grass Chat Icon The trees are preventing this... did I mention when we first moved in DH let the grass grown like 3 feet because he didnt feel like mowing the lawn Chat Icon and now all of a sudden it has to be perfect? oh boy...

Glad to hear you made some progress - you talk with Ellen at Highway?

My MIL used a tree service last summer - if you don't like the quotes you get or want a 4th co. let me know. We're going to use a co to take out our stumps as well in our back yard.

if it is half dead put a bit of lyme on it it will be whole dead real fast. the town will take it down if it is a hazard - tell them it is leaning over the street and you're afraid it will fall - they took down our old oak in front took about 4 days for them to come.
