Trex Deck Contractor?
Anyone use someone they would reccommend?
I met one guy I REALLY liked a lot - but his price was way higher than what we budgeted. I don't think there's room for $4k in negtiations !!
TIA !!

Re: Trex Deck Contractor?
It may be the decking it's self. I would ask him for a quote in cedar.
Timberteck and Trex are expensive. We are going with Timberteck since it doesn't fade and it comes out to approx. $7 sq.ft.

I know the materials are expensive - The Trex we are using is about $80/board. The deck is 16x20 - That is almost $44 a sq. foot. $7 sq foot for just the materials would be $2240, and then I'll add in the railing which I know isn't cheap either .....so even if my materials are $5,000, or evern $6,000 .......the labor for 2 days work is $8,000 or 9,000 ?? He told me it would take 2-3 days to do it.

Trex Deck Contractor?
The math isn't quite adding up. the 80/board, are those 16footers? if so, then you need 40 of them to do a 16x20 deck, thats $3200, plus the tops and kickers of the steps beleive it or not that is a lot too. Are they finishing the sides? or just leaving the PT framing exposed?
Railings, depends on what one you pick, cheaper PVC and composite railing isn't cheap, nice stuff is downright expensive. I put in timbertech radiance rail on my front porch, $29 a linier foot on average, and that was just for the peices, probably 2000 for that stuff. Also, I'm assuming they have to dig the holes, put in concrete, the actual supporting framing of the deck. fasteners (assuming you are doing concieled fasteners?, if you're not then you should be on a deck like this) I guess my point is, I think that you're underestimating the cost of material, there is a lot more than just decking boards covering the square.
As far as the amount of time and price on the labor (which is a bit of gueswork unless you're buying the materials) if you get 2 guys doing it, it will take a long time, if you get 6 guys working on it it will take 2 days. Also, he is more expensive than the others by 4K. assuming you got enough quotes, what it is telling you is, that is your difference between average and him.
A) I would talk to him and have him explain why he is higher and negotiate from there B) ensure you know what you're getting and have a written understanding with him on the materials that you're getting here. One way he may save you money is switching to the cheaper x and y, which is not what you're looking for. C) Is he getting permits? it will cost more to do so, but if you ever sell, it is piece of mind that everything is legal. D) he may cost more b/c he is good, good at selling jobs, or good at doing them. if his work is the way he acts is above everyone elses than he might be worth more to you, also if the other guys are less than honest they may be planning to charge you something on the back end when they run into "problems"
E) he may just be overpriced and still do the same job everyone else is too

Thanks - we are considering everything. Beleive me I learned the hard way and now research everything - I think his labor cost is just considerably higher - I'm going to get a few more quotes, but he has been by FAR the highest -

Trex Deck Contractor?
there are some contractors who are just high. They consider themselves worth more than others and some people pay the price and some don't. Sometimes these guys are high quality and sometimes they aren't
