Gee, I didn't realize my 3 year old should be out after dark trick or treating I'm sure if I DID have her out after dark, the post would be more like, "Can you believe those parents who drag their 3 year olds around trick or treating after their bedtime???" Sometimes ya can't win!
this def needs some
Oh Booooooo! When daylight savings time wasn't set back a week it was dark at 5PM. That's when the little kiddos came around! I guess we are too laid back in Cali!

Well this is NY- not Calfornia Nobody in my neighborhood EVER comes after dark. If it's a weekday it's right after school...on a Saturday it's as early as 1 pm. Why would you want to go after dark? Doesn't seem very safe
The kiddos go with parents and some of us parents carried a baseball bat.
My hood is pretty safe. Still alot of parents now take the little ones to the mall. It's the teenagers later at night that are iffy!

Re: Trick-or-Treating @ 1PM
I had never heard of the mall thing until this year. I heard a girl on the train telling her mom's friend that the Westchester Mall was the best spot.
Maybe that's why we I have only had 3 trick or treaters in the 9 years I've lived up here.
In Astoria , the kids woudl go to the stores on Steinway street, but I thought that was a city thing.
I wonder if after dark is more common in southern CA at least, b/c it is warmer. Here it usually gets cold after dark this time if year. ( well, not today, but sometimes)
We always went right after school & then to the school party at 4. The last time I went on a Saturday I was 11 & was allowed to go without parents, but we had to go in the daytime.

Funny isn't it... When it comes down to about the low 70's and high 60's everyone runs home for a jacket...

Total side not but I would never let my kid wear that wonder women costume in the back
In reference to the OP, we were out at 11:30. I went with a 3 yr old and 2 babies that go to bed around 5pm and have to get a nap in the afternoon. No other way around it. Plus it is Saturday. By 11:30 everyone should be dressed and ready for the day and ready to give me some candy

Apparently there is a rule here that kids don't go out until 5 pm. I actually called my neighbor when no one was here by 3 pm. We went out from 5-6 and there were lots of kids.

Re: Trick-or-Treating @ 1PM
I have a question for you East Coasters.. Do you always start your Trick or Treating at 1pm? What happens for those that work? Lots of people wouldn't be home to give candy.
This is a serious question.

For myself and most kids in my neighborhood growing up...when halloween fell on a weekend, we always went out early for ToTing. (1pm or so would be a good start time)
Otherwise it was when school was over (around 3 or 4pm) when it was during the week.
When we got a little older, we started later, but as elementary school age kids, my mom wanted us to be done by the time it was getting pretty dark.
As someone else said -- on Halloween nite in NY -- it can get pretty darn cold out after 5 or 6 pm and no one wants to wear a jacket when they have their costume on so people can't see it.

Thanks for your reply! Still here in Cali even on a weekend it's 5ish for the little ones. Totally makes sense for you guys on the East Coast!

On a weekday, we would go after school let out, but since it fell on a Sat, we went after ds nap around 3. We were home by 5:00 with plenty of time for dinner, bath and bed by 7:30
Then again, ds is 3. It would be totally different if he were 10

See, now with it being Saturday I actually expected them to start earlier.
ITA! I EXPECTED them to start about noon. As usual, I had zero trick or treaters. I thought maybe I'd have some since it was Saturday.

I'm in AZ, no kids came around until close to 6:30 or 7. They just don't go around during the day out here. I told my FI if I was a kid still I would have been TOT all day!

In So Cal the little ones go around at 5 and the older ones come around around 6:30-7 and later.

I had children start coming around 2pm. I honestly thought they would have started around noon. If I were a parent I think I would prefer to do it before it got dark. It's warmer and safer to be seen. JMO

Re: Trick-or-Treating @ 1PM
I live upstate and I was shocked that my door didn't ring until 7pm!
As a kid on LI, I remember going out at 4pm after school while it was still light out!
My little guy (8 months old) missed out on his first Halloween because it didn't get started until his bedtime
Next year I already told friends and family to expect us on Long Island! I am not taking DS around at 8pm! I was appalled that there were 11 month old babies at my door at 9pm!

We only will and did do it early when it was a weekend. And then if it was during the week we would go right after school.
With my kids I took Andrew around 3pm when it was during the week and if no one was home we just moved on. On my block I don't think anyone works Everyone is always home. My kids are still small and don't need all that candy anyway

on a weekday, I wouldnt expect it because people work, kids have school. On a weekend - sure why not.
Growing up, we always went trick or treating in the evenings.

My mom seriously thought that they extended DST so kids would have more daylight to TOT...yeah mom - that's exactly what the congress members were thinking about!
We had about 1-2 TOTers a year when we lived in CA
