Trigger and IUI

I hate not seeing the same doctor for every visit but I'll let that pass. Can someone explain the triggger and IUI process to me so I am prepared when I got for CD17 sono on saturday? When DH and I went for consultation the dr we met with did not mention IUI. He said clomid for three months and then move to IVF. I have seen posts on here about the trigger and I really dont have any idea what it is. Also it wasnt until this morning did the nurse (cause my dr was apparently sleeping) told me about filling out the forms for IUI. I explained that I wasnt aware that we were doing that and she kinda had this funny look as to why no one had brought it up before. They did call me in the afternoon the darn nurse again and NOT the dr to let me know that I was not surging and that my follie wasnt ready and I needed to come back in on saturday and she said the dr will discuss our "options" on saturday. What are my options? Are there questions I should ask on saturday? I am finding this whole process confusing. Sorry for all the questions but I know you guys can help!

Re: Trigger and IUI

Ok, you have one follie, right? Do you naturally O on your own? Did you take Clomid?

The "trigger" is basically a shot of LH. In a normal cycle, your LH will naturally surge right before O, which triggers your follie to let go of the egg. The trigger is an artificial LH surge which does the same thing. I would think you would have gotten a prescription for the trigger though, did you? It would either be Ovidrel or something similar to that (a subcutaneous shot that you can do at home) or HCG, usually an intramuscular shot that your doctor may administer. You may not "need" a trigger, if you O on your own you should have a natural LH surge.

The IUI will take place about 36 hours after trigger or natural LH surge.

If you are not triggering, I would ask how they will know when you O...they may tell you to do OPKs at home or they may just base the scheduling of the IUI on the size of your follie on Saturday. Since that follie is such a slow grower though, I'd want to make sure that they don't schedule the IUI too soon, know what I mean?

HTH, good luck...if you have specific questions about the IUI let me know, I've only had one though so I'm not an expert LOL.

This is my first cycle on clomid. My history is that I dont ovulate regularly. RE has been monitoring me through BW and Sonos. RE has not written me a prescripition and the only way I even know about the trigger is from here. RE never mentioned it.

Re: Trigger and IUI

This is my first round of clomid and because of my age I wanted to get aggressive and do IUI with clomid. The doctor agreed. So I left with an rx for clomid & ovidrel. I was to bring the ovidrel when I came in for my sonogram.

So I took clomid CD's 3-7, went in for sono on CD12 to see how things were progressing. Because I had two large and two medium follicles the doctor said I was ready to trigger. The nurse administered the ovidrel that I had brought with me and I have to go in tomorrow morning for IUI.

If you don't ovulate normally I would think the doctor would suggest a trigger. Even if you don't do IUI the trigger will help you time BDing.

Hope that helps!

Re: Trigger and IUI

I'm not sure which RE you are seeing (sounds suspiciously like RSNY) but I would demand to see or speak to YOUR doctor before Saturday - as in tomorrow.
I'm sure he can call from whatever office he is in.
