please answer with the first thing that comes to mind......
***If a person offers temptation by leaving something of value out in the open, then he is almost as much to blame as the person who steals said item.***

False.
The person that steals the item is 100% wrong. The person that left the item out in plain sight is naive or careless.

Re: True or False
the answer, IMO, is False.
ok....
for those who voted True...
think about it this way:
would you tell a rape victim that she asked to be raped because she was wearing a mini skirt?
(absolutely not)

in this day and age, you can't leave your stuff out...granted it may of been careless...there are more bad people then good people...so yes, said item will get taken by 6 out of 10 people

False. Why is it the burden of the person who has something of value to predict the evil intent of someone who intends to steal it?
(I might need to get another glass of wine if this goes any further)

Re: True or False
i am definitely in the minority, i say true. in today's day and age i don't understand how people can trust other people enough to leave something of value unguarded so it can be stolen.

ok this is TOTALLY different than the question asked.
the way i took your question was like if you left a GPS on your dashboard and left your car unlocked, not if you wore a miniskirt and got raped. total apples and oranges.
ETA: your question was
***If a person offers temptation by leaving something of value out in the open, then he is almost as much to blame as the person who steals said item.***
how is wearing a miniskirt "leaving something of value out in the open"?

I think these are apples and oranges- I would NEVER think that a rape victim was to blame for the way she dressed, but if someone was careless with a valuable object, then they can't complain too much if that object is taken.
I tell my students all the time not to leave their iPods and phones in their desks, and yet some of them do anyway. Then I'm expected to drop everything and find the culprit when something is stolen. I feel that if something is important to you, you will protect it. As women, we do what we can to protect ourselves, but sometimes it's out of our control (sadly).
So I think I say "true".

Re: True or False
1. it wasn't a question. it was a statement. either you agree with the statement, or you don't.
2. i wasn't referencing anything specifically.
3. i was NOT comparing a stolen GPS to being raped. that would be ridiculous.
what it boils down to is what MsMBV mentioned - the burden of the victim predicting the evil intent of the thief/rapist.
either way you slice it, the evil doer is COMPLETELY to blame, because they have NO RIGHT to violate the victim.
jmo
eta: this wasn't posted with the intent to create drama.
this was an actual question on a psychological exam - and i was just curious to see how other people would respond.

I agree. Is it smart to leave your iPod out or your car unlocked ?
No.
But if people are good people they won't steal even when "tempted"
Someone could leave a GPS on my doorstep, I wouldn't steal it

Re: True or False
False, False, False!
I honestly don't understand the thinking that it would be my fault if something I left out got stolen. Can someone explain that to me? How do you remove any blame from a person who has taken something who knows without a doubt that it doesn't belong to them? Would you blame a child who leaves his bicycle in front of his house if it got stolen? I just don't get it....
When I was at a community college, I used to have to take all of my books and my expensive calculator with me TO THE BATHROOM because of this kind of thinking. If I was in the library, I couldn't leave my textbooks on a table, because people would steal them and sell them back to the bookstore at the end of the semester.
I might be foolish to leave my valuables out in the open, but I can't accept fault for the actions of a thief.

Re: True or False
having "trust" in people shouldnt make you liable for other peoples actions at all. If we all lived that weary of other peoples intentions it would be a scary world. SO I agree false.
But the rape victim example is completly different in my head.

Re: True or False
It's definitely false. An honest person doesn't think that they are providing temptation when they forget or drop something. A thief is a thief....When you see something left behind or exposed, you make a choice. To find the rightful owner or to keep it for yourself.
I found a nano a couple years ago, brought it home and hooked it up to my computer. When the name came up on the screen I did a yellow pages search, found an address that was on the street where I found it and called. Sure enough, the child had lost his nano....I could have made the choice to just keep it - which would have made me a thief.
