True or False: You are what you post.

Do you think posters here have an "identity" that they carry with them through the boards?

Examples:

If you have heated opinions on a particular topic are you always seen as being contentious?

Or if you are sweet and loved on one board does that carry throughout even though you might get mean in another thread?


And, if so, how long does that identity take to evolve. One drama thread? 12,000 posts?

I think my personality & values are displyed pretty accurately on here.
I've been involved in drama but you guys tend to fire that up while I'm at work & I can't play. I usually miss it.

I am who I am where ever I am. My opinions on some boards do not always transcend through others. I am very conservative with some subjects and extremely liberal with others. I know some people like me, I know others don't. I'll survive either way.

I do know this though. I am NOT Thomas P. Chen.

I think there is a certain truth to people on how they post. I also think some people have almost "alter egos" on websites. I know this first hand because some people I've met at GTGers are completely different than what they portray on these message boards.

I feel my views & attitudes in life are reflective here as well. I have nobody to impress in the online world.

I don't think I post enough on here for people to have an opinion of my online persona. But the people who have met me IRL say that I am nicer in person than online.

I think I'm pretty true to myself on the boards bc when I go to GTGs I often hear how I'm exactly the same as what they imagined, good or bad I take that as a compliment!!

I try to let the majority of someone's posts determine their personality if I haven't met them before, but sometimes just 1 thread can make or break you depending on how sensitive a topic and how strongly I feel about it.

as far as the boards go, yes.

people base their impressions on you based on what they see here as they have no other basis (unless they know you in person.)

I am sure people have an idea about who they they I am based on my posts. and they are partly right.

but I think that only those that know me outside of the forum, and know me well, have a true sense of me as a whole, not just me, Ophelia.

eta: what I mean to say is...you are to each person, what they perceive you to be.

Generally, yes.

I'd say I have a general feeling on how certain people will post and on what topics, and that the same kind of philosophy extends to other boards.

For myself, I'd like to *believe* there is some consistency in my posting and that the person I am in everyday life is pretty much equaled in the way I post.

But, as with anything else, there are exceptions.

I think that if you call someone out on a specific post they will think that you are "out to get them" even if you just speak the truth.
But, across the boards I think that unless you are constantly getting into drama threads with people, you are not really looked at as a troublemaker.

I do think there are some people on here who come across one way on the boards and are totally different when you meet them.

I think that I am what I am...sometimes when I meet people I take a little bit of time to warm up...but all in all, I think I am what I post!!!

see, maybe I am confused, but I wasn't sure that this is what the OP meant.

I thought it was more about perception than everyone saying "I am who I am"

I thought this question is more "are you pegged as something by your posts" which, to my mind, is different...

I think that over time you can get a general sense of the way a poster is going to respond to a thread. This may not be how they are in real life at all, but they may have an "online identity".

It's easier to be mean, sweet, sarcastic, etc. when you don't have to see people face to face. So for some people this is like an outlet.

I also don't think it is a certain amount of posts. Sometimes after 50 you can tell when someone is going to be nasty and rude throughout their postings.

I am far more sarcastic in real life than I am on the boards.

ETA: I guess I should answer the question. I definitely feel like it takes me much more than one snarky post to deem someone snarky. Everyone has an off day. But if someone consistently posts things that are way off color, then I think it might be justified to assume that the person is either a drama lover or just bored. Many, many people on these boards (IMO) are MUCH different in real life than they are here. I think they find this a forum to be nasty or obnoxious because IRL they don't have the ballz.
