Trump speech
What did Trump say last night that is scaring people? I went to bed. I'm reading commentary on FB that people think we will be in a police state dictatorship with him as President.

Re: Trump speech
As mentioned on another thread, no president has absolute power. He can't just turn the country into a dictatorship because he feels like it. Our gov't was designed with checks and balances for that reason.
I'm not a fan of his, but I think that's a bit of a stretch. I think people on FB go off the deep end with everything lately. I take FB bullshitt with a grain of salt

I get aggrevated when I go on FB because it's always. "the sky is falling!" mentality. Whether it be a snow storm or a political election, people love to panic and cause mass hysteria. I hate it

Re: Trump speech
I'm not a fan of Trump. I could not like him less.
That said, I didn't see the fear mongering that others saw, though I did not watch the entire speech. I did find some of his claims exaggerated- for example I don't think there is an epidemic of lawlessness taking over this country.
I also thought some elements from the parts I have seen sounded a lot like something you'd hear from a Democrat- expressing support for LGBT people and claiming to be distressed about poverty in the African American communities. To me, based on prior comments, it sounds like he's just trying to get votes.
There were also some instances where he said, "We going to do x" but then the follow up was too light on specifics. If he's elected Congress is going to give him a hard time- does he realize this? Democrats for sure and even some Republicans- and if predictions are correct and downticket Republicans lose their seats, who knows what will happen.
I also listened to this speech keeping in mind that I have read of his lack of interest in actually governing. I still think he does not actually want to be President, I think he just wants to win. Pence is going to do all the work, should they win.
And off topic, but I can picture him refusing to debate Hillary. I am not a fan of her but she will mop the floor with him.

Trump speech
my favorite part was where he said he was going to protect our LGBTQ folks from the "oppression of a hateful foreign ideology"
which is great and all, but what about the hateful ideology that his own party (including his running mate) espouses?

I didn't not watch, but who the hell cares what Ivanka thinks? She is a 34 year old "business woman" who I'm sure would not be in the position she is in now without being born with a silver spoon in her mouth.
Why is she even up there talking about policies? As far as I know, she isn't running for office. This whole thing is out of control.

So true. I have no doubt that he will do nothing but create an atmosphere of more hate and anger in this country, not less. Not that I buy into his "dooms day" vision of our country as it is now - I just think he will only make things worse

Re: Trump speech
First, no President even has the power or authority to literally do whatever he wants and overhaul the whole country according to his will. So, I think if (god forbid) he wins, he will be extremely frustrated and disappointed with just how little he is able to actually do................you can't be a dictator in a democratic gov't.
That aside, he speech just reads as a bunch of empty promises and silly little catch phrases to get everyone all riled up and excited. His whole "Make America Great Again" is just silliness.
I agree with others, I don't think he has a real interest in being the President, he just wants to win to further inflate his really HUGE ego. This is a power trip for him, plain and simple.

I agree with the previous comments that he cannot just do whatever he wants - but I will always be cautious in investing my faith in just checks and balances. There are plenty of other cautionary tales about dictatorship and government coups and overthrows.
His speech sounded like garbage. He doesn't even believe what comes out of his own mouth.

Exactly. Coups and dictators don't just happen because a country doesn't have checks and balances.
As for the speech, it was just bad. Same old speeches that he's been doing-- fear, racism, etc. Oh and he kinda grabbed Ivanka's butt sort of. Gross.

My association to the "Trump" name has always been flashy scam artist chauvinist, and maybe that's why I have never bought her shoes.

Trump speech
I think the part that scared people the most is how he keeps saying he's going to break all of these treaties and trade agreements, pull us out of NATO, etc. So despite Melania's statements to the contrary, America's word is not our bond...
Even if he doesn't have the ability to unilaterally pull us out of these treaties and agreements, he will end up alienating all of our allies around the world, and that will have a detrimental effect on our safety and security.
I seriously fear for our country if he gets elected. He is so far out of his league, just completely clueless when it comes to world affairs.

I'll be honest. I didn't watch most of it because he revolts me.
Did he mention any sort of plan on anything? Or more bs like- we're going to do great things and it's going to be fantastic?
Any mention of education, plans for the military, student loans, Wall Street, or anything of substance?

As per usual with him, there were no specifics. Just a lot of "I'm going to do this" and "I'm going to do that." He was speaking to his base. They loved every minute of it. But I'm not sure that he converted any independents or Bernie supporters.

I am curious to see Hillary's speech and how she outlines the specific steps she intends to take to accomplish her stated goals.
