TV's at Gas Pump

Has anyone seen this?

They have them at the Shell station right by my apt.

They are flat screen TV's at the top of the pump.

I thought it was interesting - it did make the time to pump my gas go by faster! Chat Icon

Re: TV's at Gas Pump

Ok, I don't think I need any more distractions at the pump. I hate pumping gas...some girl was talking to me once and showing me some new Credit Card thingy and I didn't put the nozzle in the gas tank, and it spilled all over my pants! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes, and I HATE it. I am often getting gas during business hours and on the phone with a client or something and it's really hard to hear because the TVs are so loud, as well as the client wondering where the heck I am with loud TVs on in the background!

Well, the one I mentioned strictly plays news so I don't really see the problem. It's just keeping up on current events.

It's not like it's playing Nicktoons.

I've seen them and I could care less.

I'm usually inside getting my Ice Coffee and a snack anyway.

It doesn't scare me, but I had the same thoughts. I think I can stand there for 5 minutes without some form of entertainment/information coming at me.

This scares me a little too. I feel like I should be paying more attention to my car, my purse and people around me. Also, I know there is already surveillance video in most places, but the more TVs that are put up, I can't help but feel will one day be watching us, like in brother and all privacy will be lost.

You should be careful - it is dangerous to talk on the phone while getting gas - it can cause a fire. I think (but I am not positive) that it might actually be illegal. Something with the way the phone can cause a static spark and the fumes can catch fire.

I was going to say the same thing. I'm pretty sure its illegal to talk on the phone and pump gas at the same time for the reason listed above....

I absolutely HATE pumping gas so anything to make the time go quicker is ok by me

Re: TV's at Gas Pump

Seriously?? It doesn't take THAT long to fill up, IMO the TVs are a bit much.

I'd rather be watching out for what's going on around me and keeping an eye out for any creeps.

They're a distraction and for that reason not a good idea.

Mythbusters did everything they possibly could to try and get it to ignite, but couldn't. Closed box, with perfect amount of gas fumes. Shorted out battery, exposed wires, etc. A cell phone just will not, under any circumstances, start a fire.

Re: TV's at Gas Pump

If there was even the remotest possibility of cell phone near a pump starting a fire... wouldn't a TELEVISION IN THE PUMP be a far greater danger??

Just saying that it doesn't seem that safe to me!
