Two new combo vaccines were approved by FDA

ATLANTA - A federal advisory panel on Thursday endorsed two new combination vaccines designed to reduce the number of needle sticks that young children must endure to get the recommended immunizations.

The panel gave its nod to a four-in-one shot made by GlaxoSmithKline. It offers protection against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and polio and costs $45. It's given once to preschool-aged children.

Also getting approval was Sanofi Pasteur's five-in-one shot for diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio and illness due to Haemophilus influenzae type b, or HiB. It costs about $69. Youngsters get four doses by age 2.

Both combinations shots were recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The combo shots don't change the recommended vaccine schedule, just the number of needle jabs needed.

The vaccine advisory panel OK'd the shots for the federal Vaccines for Children program, which pays for vaccinations for about 36 million children who are covered by Medicaid, are uninsured or meet other eligibility guidelines.

The panel's recommendations are also considered influential with private health insurers.

The approval brings to six the number of multi-disease combination vaccines available to children.

Dr. Gregory Wallace, chief of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Vaccine Supply and Assurance Branch, said he expects more combination vaccines to become available.

The availability of both combination vaccines and individual vaccines will likely cause confusion and storage issues at many doctor's offices, panel members acknowledged.

Pure insanity!! So, now if your child does have a vaccine reaction, you have no idea from what particular vaccine.

But I'm sure these companies will make a lot off of it and market it as the way to best protect your children with less needlesticks...it is sickening, just sickening!

I think it's ALL ABOUT MONEY. That way you don't go to as many visits and cost the insurance for all those visits.

That has NOTHING to do with the kids. We had plenty of shots when we were kids. I don't think any of us are traumatized by to many shots in our infancy. Really!!!!!

I seriously question if the "safety" of children even came up.

Aren't all of those shots ones that are all routinely given on the same visit anyway (provided you go by the CDC schedule)?

All three of those shots are recommended to be given at the same visit is what I was saying. DD received all of those the same day in 3 different injections.

I didn't even want to give ONE other shot at the same time as DTP, considering it's already a combo shot in itself. I was told DTP is one of shots most likely to cause a reaction (not a dangerous one, but fever, swelling at the injection site, etc). What a great idea to bombard a baby's body with 3 other unrelated vaccines at the same time!

Disgusting how they have no regard for our kids' safety.

Right, but I'm talking specifically about what the CDC recommends, so a combo shot of all of those things posted above is not any different than what the recommended immunizations already are per visit. Whether or not a particular doctor follows the guidlines or not isn't really the point.

Yes 2 "injections" not 2 immunizations. So if you are getting 2 injections, you could very well be getting 4 immunizations at a time.

Hib is not the "regular" flu shot.

Ahh you edited your post.

I think the biggest issue here is not whether or not it follows the existing CDC recommendation. It's that it removes the *freedom of choice* from the parent and places it in the hands of the pharmaceutical industry and the insurance companies.

I don't care what the CDC recommends, I personally would never put that many vaccines in a baby's body all at once. The immune reaction it could trigger might be traumatic. What I want is to retain the OPTION to separate and delay the vaccines I want, and not have some combo shot shoved down my throat because it saves the insurance companies money.

Yes I edited my post, lol! I read in someone's reply the mention of "influenza shot". Then I reread the original post and saw it was mentioning HIB which can cause meningitis, not regular influenza. It was my mistake!

the CDC also gives practiioners "windows" so not to bombard children with immunizatons, that is why most only give max 2 per visit and will not give 2 injections that are composed of multiple virus'. This gives the child less to deal with phsically and also allows to r/o reactions to certain injections.

I think there are many that do not give more than 2 injections, however, I defininately disagree that it's "most" of them.

IF there is a combo shot for these, I'm sure if you pay the price you can still get them separate (like the MMR).
