Two questions -dog and DC related

One) DS birthday is next month and hes been asking for a dog......however, a few years ago we had to rehome our cat bc he was severely allergic to it. Is there a way to find out if he is allergic to dogs too before we consider it? I dont know anyone with a dog, so I cant really expose him to one to see what happens.

2) Can anyone recommend a small, family/kid friendly, non-hyper breed? We live in a co-op, about 1100 square feet, so no yard of our own, although there is a very large grassy area so we would have to take him to dog parks and really long walks just to get him out and give him some exercise.

Re: Two questions -dog and DC related

You could probably take Eddie to the allergist and they could test him to see if he is allergic to dogs.

I am very allergic to cats and I have two dogs and am perfectly fine.

I have puggle. It is a cross between a pug and a beagle. He is great with Chelsea. Very friendly. I have no worries about anyone coming into my house with him. Before we had the house we lived in a condo with him and it wasn't a problem at all. He loved to go for walks and was generally calm when in the house.

ETA: He is about 25lbs.

you can take him to an allergist to see if he's allergic.

if you are open to it - there are also breeds of dogs that are 'hypoallergenic'. i know that poodles are one of them....they don't have 'dog hair' - it's more like human hair - so there is no 'dander' on the skin which is what most people are allergic to.

we had a toy poodle and he was the best dog IN THE WORLD!

Like a PP said you could try an allergist.

It's kinda hard to recommend a breed.. it varies so much on the individual personality. I have a Jack Russell Terrier. I've heard people say they can be nasty, bark a lot, be bad with kids and are crazy.
She's actually pretty lazy unless she's hunting something and she's really good with DS. My parents have one as well. She barks so much we call her mouth.
I think your best bet would be to get an adult dog, that way you know what your are getting.

We have a wonderful (mostly poodle) toy poodle. He is 7lbs, doesn't shed & is "hypoallergenic" We got him because after much research online we found them to be good dogs for children. That being said... I am deathly allergic to all cats & dogs. When we brought him home as a puppy I was sneezing, breaking out in hives & I though this is going to be a problem. After less then two weeks it all stopped. I have never been allergic to him again. My body adjusted.

My best friend has a precious Puggle but I am deathly allergic.

I rec a toy poodle ( I grew up with one and he was the best) My chihuahua Lola is great with my son but very hyper/yappy and doesn't like anyone else so although I LOVE her to death I would not rec a chihuahua!

There are some breeds of dogs that are considered to be "hypoallergenic". My friend has a Havanese. He is the cutest thing ever and hes great with DD, not very big or hyper. My mom has a shis-tsu who is also very good with the baby...he doesn't shed and is not hyper at all (probably the laziest dog I've ever seen!)

as a dog lover and someone with sever allergies - a couple of things to consider - dogs can inflict a lot of allergic reactions even if you are not allergic to dogs

dogs stir up dust as move around the house and play and also bring allergens in from outside in the spring

we have a golden retriever - but friends have a golden doodle that does not shed - very mellow but large - there are some golden doodles that are bread small - another option may be a 3-4 year old wheaton - they are a little nuts when younger but are better a little older

you may want to try fostering a dog or bed sitting for a dog to make sure your family is ready for one

Re: Two questions -dog and DC related

I have a maltese who is hypoallergenic. He was ruined by DH's little cousin bc when he was only a few wweeks old he cornered him and scared him so now he is petrified of children, but he LOVES DS. They are usually very good with children I love him to death!

heres a pic bc he is cute!

This is when we FIRST got him
