I am surprised CVS would let a consumer convert pre-tax dollars into post tax dollars.

I don't know if all Flex plans are the same. But I was told by my HR dept that it's no longer allowed.

I know you can buy stuff with the pretax money. But it sounds like bicosi is suggesting to buy those items and return it for cash that you can now spend as you wish. Or did I misunderstand the suggestion?

Re: UGH Flex plan!! HELP
If you used a flex spend card to buy, when you returned it the money would go back on the card. But if you used your own money, and submitted a paper claim for the reimbursement....you could technically return the items afterwards.

Actually, this is a common misconception of the new regulations.
As of 1/1/11, you can still get over the counter items like bandages, contact lens liquid, etc. For over the counter MEDICINES (claritin, advil, tylenol, etc), you will now need a doctor's prescription in order to receive reimbursement, but they will still be eligible for reimbursement with flex.

Not sure how you can return things when, at least at my company, you have to submit the original receipt to the flex-spending company for reimbursement.

I know people who have done this.. they have later returned it for either GCs or cash or even sold it after (defribillator, etc)..
I have never done this nor participated in flex spending.. just put it out there.

Re: UGH Flex plan!! HELP
I had this issue a few years back.
I used it to buy the ClearBlue Easy Fertility monitor (about $200) and some testing sticks. I knew I was going to TTC the next year and at almost 37, didn't want to waste any time.
I got pregnant the 5th month of using it and now gave it to a friend after having my DS!

We submit claims online, with a copy of the receipt attached.

Re: UGH Flex plan!! HELP
I would buy like all the advil, cold medicines, diaper rash ointment, corisone cream, whatever, you'll need for the next year. You could always find out what family members need and give it away. Or everyone can get like, a bottle of co Q10 in their christmas stocking
