Ugh, no ultrasound at first appt
So I just made my first prenatal appt for June 6 (I'll be almost 9 weeks) The receptionist tells me that the first appt. is to meet up with the nurse and she'll get my history and give me scripts to have bld work done..but no ultrasound after that appt. I'll make another appt with the Dr. a few weeks later for an ultrasound. Im so disappointed. I wanted to see my LO! Anyone else's hospital do this?
ETA: Does the nurse do the ultrasound or the Dr. (or can they both?)
ETAA: I'll actually be 9 weeks by then.
ETAAA: I just left a msg. with the nurse to confirm this. Maybe the receptionist wasnt sure.

Re: Ugh, no ultrasound at first appt
really?? Sorry, I think that is a little crazy. My office says they HAVE to do a sono within two weeks. Between weeks 6-8. They have to make sure everything is ok and see a heartbeat.

That sounds odd to me too. I would think they would want to confirm a heartbeat and whatnot.

Re: Ugh, no ultrasound at first appt
did you start with an RE first? that does sound unusual. i would think they want to peak in and make sure you are on target, see the heartbeat, etc. i can't imagine waiting until 12 weeks for that!

Re: Ugh, no ultrasound at first appt
No, have never seen an RE. I know, I found it odd too. The receptionist did say however that if the nurse feels its necessary to do one at the appt that she might but she didnt say she definitely would.

Re: Ugh, no ultrasound at first appt
thats really odd! when I went the nurse (maybe it was a sono tech or PA) did it.
I would call back because you really should be getting one at this point. it sounds like they weren't clear with you

Re: Ugh, no ultrasound at first appt
really??????? with both pregnacies I had a sono tech to a sono at around 7 1/2wks with DD and the second pregancy at 8wks 6days.
I would call and ask to speak to a doctor because IMO thats seems a long time to wait for a sono. It might be how they do things in that office. I only know of one person that had that happen

Thank you ladies. I thought it was kind of bizarre. I will call tomorrow and ask a nurse instead.

Re: Ugh, no ultrasound at first appt
i agree it is really weird. I would call back and insist on a sono - why waste time with two separate appointments, you know? at 9 weeks they can do all the bloodwork and an internal in one shot.

Re: Ugh, no ultrasound at first appt
I had blood at 4 and 4.5 weeks and US will be at 6.5 with my RE and then I see my OB at 8.5 and I will have another US.
I am a little bit differnt cause I am seeign an RE as well as an OB, but even if I wasnt I'd still get an US around 7-8 weeks at my OB.

Re: Ugh, no ultrasound at first appt
I may be the only one to post this, but the U/S is just to confirm the heartbeat. The dr. cannot tell anything more than that really. It is not an necessity. In fact, most insurance companies, beyond 2 u/s or sonos need prior approval first. The only really important ones are at 13weeks and 20 weeks. All the others are to just check and confirm everything is okay. With blood work and exam, the doctor can tell most everything she needs.
I am pretty cynical, and while I know it is nice to see the baby, I think we are overusing the sonos and u/s technology. Most obgyns have them in their office and can charge for it, so why not use it, kwim?

I agree with this to a point. I was just thinking that even without the U/S your doc might still confirm a heartbeat with a regular fetal heart monitor. And it's true that some insurance companies are funny about ultrasounds, however, I know when I had my earlier u/s they also wanted to confirm that it was just one baby, and make sure that it wasn't ectopic, and things like that.

thats not true, they also measure the baby to make sure its growing "on time" within reason based on your LMP or your O date....they "date" the pregnancy. They also check for cysts or an uterine/ovarian abnormalities as well as the structure of the sac.

I always thought they got the most accurate due date between 6 and 8 weeks, so I agree, that seems a bit odd

That doesn't sound right to me.
I has my first sono at 6 weeks. I was able to see it on the screen, it was small but I saw it and teh tiny heart flickering on the screen.
If it were me, I would think of choosing another Dr.

I agree that is CRAZY. In my situation, it would have been even worse that it was if i didn't get that first sono.

this.. and they have to confirm its an intra-uternine pregnancy.. nothing else matters if it isn't.. sad but true..

exactly. the sooner you rule out ectopic, the better. you don't want to wait until 12 weeks to do that! i honestly do not think that having an initial sono at your 7-10 week appointment is overdoing it.

I agree with this. My first appointment will be this week and I will be 5 weeks 2 days. My OB told me I would be getting a sono, just to make sure everything is where it should be.
If you see that your OB won't budge, I would suggest making an appointment with a different OB and see how you feel.

Re: Ugh, no ultrasound at first appt
my first doc with my first preg didn't even want to see me until I was like 10w or something crazy like that.
I fought for closer to 8w and got a sono then.
some dr's just don't want to do much during the beginning of pregnancy. I don't fully understand it.... wouldn't they want to make sure everything is going smoothly??
is this a new dr? i find that often it's when you are seeing a new dr they want to take their time.
