UGH! Peds office, discussion w/my mom
at this age...
DD had a 1yr appt and has a 15 month appt in a few weeks
I don't remember if they did the lead test (I don't *think* so), so my mom asks if they did (my mom is a ped), and I told her no...
So she's like, well why didn't they do the lead and other bloodwork yet? I make sure all my patients get it done by 1yr...
So I'm like, fine, I'll ask at the 15 month appt
Then she keeps saying, ask your Ped about DD's speech (she only has 1 word, and babbles now at 14 months), I called EI, they said its still early so wait a bit...
I love my mom, its so convenient that she helps (DD had an ear infection, she checked it at our house and called the Rx, etc), but sometimes she is driving me nuts about some of this stuff She always asks about the speech thing...then this is the 3rd time she's asked about the lead test...
Am I overreacting? I know she's just trying to help

Re: UGH! Peds office, discussion w/my mom
my son just had his lead test...he'll be 2 this month.
I think your mom is being cautious, but she is comparing what she would do, if she was her doctor. try not to have her involved with her medical care, just have her be a grandma. She will have something to say about every Ped that does something different than she would do!

Of course she's just trying to help, and she's more invested in your child than any of her patients...but we all know that all doctors are different. If you are comfortable with yours, then mention it to her when you see her (or call) just to make yourself feel better. My best friend's daughter wasn't saying any real words at 15 mths and EI did come. She was totally fine, and started saying so many more words in the following weeks! I ay follow your gut!

Thanks! That's exactly it, she preferred NOT to be DD's Ped and be just grandma (conflict of interest or whatnot)...
It's just annoying to have to hear that, but you're right, she is just being cautious, I should be happy

Re: UGH! Peds office, discussion w/my mom
I would love it if my mom was a pediatrician!! but I guess its a double edged sword...
Im a first time mom so I feel so lost sometimes... I would be calling her everyday LOL... my mom calls and gives me her opinion/advice everyday (without me asking for it) and she is not a pediatrician... I think all grandma's do it!

Take this spin on it - you are so lucky that she is so invested in your DD's health - that she cares about her sooo much and that you always have someone to check in with about medical concerns and won't get blown off.
Can it be a pain, i'm sure it could be. But that's the sign of a good mom and grandma, that she cares so much and is willing to annoy the hell out of you to make her point.

She is totally trying to help. My mom is a doc...ob/gyn at that. Her intentions are always good but sometimes I just want her to be mom and grandma.

Re: UGH! Peds office, discussion w/my mom
The lead test is a blood test. Maybe you can call your ped and get the Rx to take your DC before the 15 mo exam so you can get the results at the 15 mo exam.
As far as the speech goes - with my DS @ 14-15 mos I barely got words out of him. When I called EI they said that until 18 mos its just one test for development and speech. Since DS did so much other development things he wouldn't qualify. THey said to call back after DS was 18 mos b/c then they could give him just a speech test.

Re: UGH! Peds office, discussion w/my mom
moms can be so annoying!!!! lol... i know she means well but she needs to trust u and your doctor. When she asks you questions make a note of it and if u feel nec. ask ur doc when u go. when i returned home after peds visits my mom would call me with 100's of questions... seriously....! so i solved the problem by not telling her when they were........ anyway..... i would tell her to ask you once and you'll take care of it and to stop stressing you. its hard enough being a mom without the stress of your own mom. Tell her when u have medical questions she will be the 1st one u ask.... good luck!!!

Re: UGH! Peds office, discussion w/my mom
Two things I find a tad bit annoying: my mom "suggesting things" and every pediatrician having a different protocol. My ped does do bloodwork at 1 year (DS will be going this week or next). DS will be turning 1 and IMO has a speech delay. He babbles but has no words (sometimes I *think* I hear mama and dada) and will be pushing for AI at his appt. As much as my mom annoys me (and I have certainly vented more than once about it here) I do know that her heart is in the right place.
