Ughh..yea this sucks.
So, after being laid off for 7 months, I found a job in May. They told me I'd be off for the stock holidays, plus 3 weeks vacay. Perfect, right?
Well, we have our main office in Monaco, and now the boss decide he wants our 4 person NY office to be open on holidays such as Memorial Day, 4th of July, etc.
We now have 25 days of vacation and we have to use our vacation days if we want to take off on the holidays.
this reallyyy blows!!!!!

15 days and stock holidays is what my vacation was until I guess, yesterday.
I'm getting 10 more days..but essentially have to take off 8 of them for holidays..KWIM?
My office is small, only 4 people...and someone is going to have to be here on those days-and it will end up being me.

I work in an office of 4, and do have to work most of those holidays so we are doing two on, two off. Splitting it to be fair.
Can then be presented to boss? to be fair?

This is a good idea..
I'd also just kind of ride it out a little bit, since the main office is in Monaco, they may not know how quiet it gets on those major holidays...and maybe after you work a couple, they may change their mind again...

I have worked in several subsidiaries of foreign companies (both while in Europe and while in the US). One of the office as little as 5 people. We were NEVER asked to work on major Holidays.
Does the boss plan on being in the office? I would hope so. Doesn't he have a life?
Never in those previous jobs have we been asked to be open on those days. The US has such a lot amount of Holidays/vacations days compared to Europe, those few days are insignificant.
I would ask your co-workers if you guys are agreeing on taking turns. Then submit to your boss.

Does the boss realize that it may not be cost effective to have an office open on major US holidays ?
Nothing goes on - no banking, no mail.
I don't know what your company does, but if you do business with any other US company, nothing will be accomplished.

Hmmm i dont think it sounds like such a bad deal since you can take off the holidays with your extra days and then if you have nothing to do that day you can just go in. . .
I personally would like something like this better since DH works all the summer holidays - I would love to have extra days off in the winter. . .

It could be..but who really wants to work 4th of July or Memorial day or Labor day?
I mean...if I wanted to work those days, I'd be in a different industry or be doing a different job...
One of the girls works from home on Mondays-so already July 5th, Labor day and Memorial day she wont have to work..and is taking off the week of good friday..so she wont have to work those days.
and the other girl-shes really irresponsible and will put it on me.

it would be horrible for me to go in on July 4th or Memorial Day-when everyone else is off!
we almost always do something so i would NOT like this at all..

Yeah, that's the other thing, it wouldn't bother ME since my DH is FDNY and always has to work...

Only from the main office being in Monaco, I'm guessing it's a financial company/some sort of fund but if that is the case, I think they will see there is NO point in being there on those days!

sounds like you got an extra 10 days off to cover just about all of the stock holidays anyway.....
Plus, most of the time, the Monday holidays always seem to turn into Sunday BBQ's and the Monday is used as a resting day....
I'd say...stick it out for now and see how things go....hopefully things will turn out for you the way you want them to!
