ugh..watching this is just so hard. can we all as mommies/parents send some prayers
to those poor people in Haiti.
so many children killed and families ripped apart..I just cannot fathom it. 
it is times like these when ideas like Bxgel's charity in lieu of gifts for her dd really ring true for me.
we have SO MUCH more than these people...who even when there is a roof over their head live with the REAL danger of it falling down on them for something far less powerful than an earthquake.
my son wants for nothing important in this life. He is fed, clothed, housed, and loved beyond measure. Just those things, that we see as basic necessity, lift him far above 80% of the people on an entire country.
the inequity of the world never ceases to floor me.
it is so true...but for the grace of God go I. 
does anyone know of any organization accepted durable goods? I'd rather send blankets, clothes, water, food etc than money at this point.

I was thinking the same thing earlier! I was looking for somewhere to donate clothes and stuff. All I saw was $ donations.
The whole thing is so sad.

I have been wondering too- I was just about to donate most of my summer clothes and I have a ton of DD's stuff- I would rather it go there. If I find info I will pass it along.

one of my coworkers is vacationing there now and another has not been able to speak to any of his immediate family there...it is just terrible....

I work for a nursing home where probably more than 50% of our aides are Haitian. A few people already heard for a fact that loved ones were killed. Others cant get in touch with family. It's a sad day here today.
I will try to find out thru them if there is any organized charity.

From what I read miles of roads are impassable from the damage... so even if you donated goods, it would be a long while b/f they could even get them to where they needed to be- that's probably why a $ donation is better.
Food For the Poor is a great organization- 97% of donations goes towards programs- they have very low administrative costs.. and they've already been a presence in Haiti for a long while (they actually did an appeal for Haiti around Christmas).

MY BIL most likely going to be deployed to Haiti in 2 day, even though they just got back from a deployment not even a month ago. I'll ask him if he know how we can send stuff there!

The organization efforts it would take to get durable goods donated is probably not paramount at this time as they are having a hard time getting workers/doctors/etc in to the country.
If you can donate $$$, I would do that as they are going to need it.

thank you for this. the only thing that bothers me is that making a donation doesn't got to HAITI but to the international fund. UNICEF is the same and I already donate to both generally speaking.

agreed...at this point it would take a long time to get things to people. They need money in order to establish basic needs like water, food and shelter first.

Try Partners in Health.
My book club just read the book "Mountains Beyond Mountains" which is about Dr. Paul Farmer who created this group and made it what it is today. It is people like him that give me faith in humanity and prove to me that we're not all greedy b@stards out for self. He's dedicated his life to bringing healthcare to the poor, specifically in Haiti. He chose Haiti because he decided it was the poorest place on earth and he does it just because he CAN.

I used to work in fundraising and as long as they give a portion to what was promised in the campaign materials they can use the rest of the money collected for other things. With something this high profile though I doubt very much any reputable non-profit would as the media backlash if that came out would not be worth it and likely destroy the organization.

I was just watching NY1, and they did say that funds donated for this cause will go directly to the cause. They gave a bank acct # to donate too - I wasn't able to catch everything because I was listening in the background while tending to Maya, but I plan on going to NY1.com later, and I'm sure there will be links.

I just sent a donation to Drs without borders. Their facilites there all collapsed and I think they do excellent work.

I can't even imagine. I read the article and just wept. Those poor children. I just keep thinking of the children.
I saw an interview with UNICEF that said that there are children who survived just walking the streets because they are separated from their families. They are sending units to find them and get them to shelter and give them medical help and food and water.
The Unicef lady said that a dollar can give water for 40 days to one child. They are taking donations on their website and are saying that they will go straight to Haiti.

You can donate to Wyclef Jean's Foundation - Yele Haiti - I believe all that he raises goes directly to Haiti. They already have a page set up for donations.
