Unfortunately this seems to be acceptable in some southern states. My BF who moved to ATL was having a baby shower thrown for her down there and the host was asking people to pay - she freaked out and they got into a big fight over it. My FRIEND ended up catering food for her own shower, which was held in her own house  but this other chick was supposedly hosting it.

This is one of the tackiest things I have ever heard of. Um come to my shower, bring me a gift and pay for your own food/drink at the shower?? What the heck.

This is the second time I've heard of someone having to pay to go to a party this week.
Juney - I think you need to show up drunk. $16 is not going to cover any alcohol.

Maybe get a lunch box...pack your own lunch and when you get to the door and they ask for the money...lift the lunch box and tell them "nah - I'm good."
Too funny to ask for money let alone a number like $16.00. At least you get a good laugh from it.

Is it at a house? Then that is so tacky and ghetto.
If it is at a resturant then its not so tacky for Florida. I have been to many a shower down here and we all just went out like it was going out for a brunch, lunch or dinner and got our own bills and brought gifts. The Hostess did supply games, prices and decorations and cake.. But again these showers were thrown by friends so no one cared there was never any family involved. I've learned down here that if its a transplant friend with no family paying for you own food isn't uncommon... but if a mom or sister is travelling down they normally pick up the tab.
