UPDATE: about call backs to Ped service & a bit of a long vent
I called my Pediatrician's service about an hour and a half ago about my son (11 mos tomorrow) who had a violent episode where he threw up & gagged. This has happened before, and last time it resulted in a 3 day stay at the hospital. I called to see if I should wait to bring him in tomorrow, or if she felt his symptoms were bad enough to go to the ER. (Turns out it was a one time deal, so we are not in the ER...)
She still has not called back. And I called the service and verified that they got the right phone number. Yep, right number, no call back.
Last few visits at this office I felt rushed and although I think that the Drs are nice, they have made a few small errors recently, one with vitamin doses. Also another Ped said DS was in the 10th Percentile for his weight, but then corrected herself at the next visit saying she had him at the 15 mos mark, when he was only 10 mos at the time.
Anyway, so at this point, should I look for another Ped? I have already changed once, and I feel like maybe I am expecting something unreasonable or something that does not exist.
TIA. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Long Update:
So the other night after I thought all was well my poor LO got another low-grade fever and started to have some post-nasal drip. This is the beginning of every illness he has ever had, so I switch him to soy formula and give him pedialyte between bottles. His temp spiked to 102.4 at around 7pm, so I call the ped service again. This time the Dr called back in 3 minutes. She told me to give him Tylenol and to watch him to see if he began to have rapid breathing, wheezing, or gagging. He did not, so we went to bed & put the humidifier on. DS wakes me up at 3:40 AM gagging and gasping for air. He was panicking. We get him upright & whack him on the back, and he begins to breathe but is wheezing very heavily. We pack a bag & call the service as we go to the ER. His temperature is now 103. On the way to the hospital, he begins to choke again, and (I know I should not have, but) I take him out of the caqr seat & whack him on the back again to get him breathing somewhat normally. At this point the service had the Dr call me (again within 5 minutes) and she told me to get to the ER. I tell he we are on the way & she says she will call ahead to let them know we are coming. As I am talking to her, DS begins to cough....and sounds like a seal. Yep, he has the Croup.
After a short 2 hour stay in the ER they give him a steriod to open his airway and Tylenol to conrtol his temp. We go home & DS sleeps but barely. The poor kid also threw up every bottle after that. The Ped fit us in the next day for a follow-up & the care was incredible. They were patient and attentive and very detailed about follow-up care at home and what to expect in the coming days. She also told me that I did exactly the right thing, and also told me that I am so in-tune to DSs health and behaviours that I know he is getting sick before he has identifiable signs of the illness. She also told me that although that is good in a way, it will also be frustrating when I know he is incubating something that is not yet detectable in a test. This also happened when he had the RSV. 3 days earlier I knew he wasn't "right" and all the tests cam back negative.
I decide to smention my concern about Mon. night & they told me that they are looking into a new service. Apparently the pages never went through, and I was not the only one to complain.
I also found out from the nurse that the day the we had the "bad visit" the Dr. was in the hospital unexpectedly with another patient & was not "herself" that day. (I did not get all the details, but apparently she went there to fight for a particular treatment for a patient & the hospital was not being accomodating). Now it still concerns me that she was distracted when she saw my son, but I guess if it is a one time deal and she has been great since I am going to give the practice another chance. I am also looking into a Ped Nutritionist for his feeding, that way the responsibility of that part of his development is being watched by 2 professionals.
Thanks to all who offered help & FMed.

Re: Question about call backs to Ped service & a bit of a long vent
I am so sorry. If you are not happy I am always in the mind frame that we are the best advocates for our children. I would call back the service and demand a return call. I would then make an appointment with the lead doc asap and have a 'consult' with him and discuss with him your concerns. If things can't be corrected then I would switch. If there seems to be a problem with one particular doc in your practice then I would avoid him/her.
I hate the lead doc of my practice. I will not see him. I will leave if he is the only one on.

Personally, I would start looking for another office. This time, it doesn't happen to be an emergency, so no big deal...but what about next time? Little mistakes and oversights can lead to bigger ones. I wouldn't be comfortable.

Re: Question about call backs to Ped service & a bit of a long vent
i would LOSE it if it took them an hour and a half to call back over something like that due to his history...thats just me.
If It were me..I think I would call and ask to speak to the Dr...to confirm that DS is Ok and ask why they take so long to call back.
I dont honestly know if thats an unreasonable timeframe..but for me it would be too long...
I expect a lot from Dr's..have put up with a lot for myself, but when it comes to DS, I expect it perfect or at least the effort.
Not sure if I would switch ASAP, but I would give them a chance and if you dont feel like they are taking you seriously or have no valid reason for tonights delayed phone call..I would leave. ESPECIALLY since you called BACK.
I hope Baby G feels better

Re: Question about call backs to Ped service & a bit of a long vent
Thanks guys & thanks everyone. I can be a thunderous b!t@h when I think things are not to my liking, but sometimes I think I get out of line. But 2 calls & no return call is the final straw I think.
Thanks everyone for your advice

I hope Baby G feels better Thanks hun, he seems to be OK. I think he might have a tomato allergy, b/c I have a sensitivity to them and he tried the Earths Best Spaghetti tonight & it has tomato in it. He got a tiny rash and a slightly elevated temp. My bad for not reading the label that thoroughly.
His temp went down & he took 6 oz of milk with no re-gurge or gagging, so I think he is OK. I am just concerned b/c earlier in the day his nose was runny. He is teething though, and I think it is just bad timing.....
Thanks again

I completely agree. You are not being unreasonable at ALL. I would be very upset too. There must be a ped. office out there that will meet your expectations, which are totally normal. No return call in that time frame along with the other minor errors are just unacceptable. I hope you find a good practice really soon.

Re: Question about call backs to Ped service & a bit of a long vent
Did they ever call you back? They always call me back if it is after hours within an hour!
I am very surprised! I am so sorry! I recommended you to them!
Whether or not you decide to switch please let them know your concerns! I hope this is an isolated incident and maybe you telling them why your switching will help other moms in the practice. Was it the same Dr each time?
Again I am so sorry!

Again I am so sorry! Aww, please do not be sorry. The reason why this is a struggling decision is that I love 2 drs in the practice. I love the women at the desk, but the service overnight seems to be lacking. When I called the service they *swore* to me that they paged her within 2 minutes of the end of my first call, but who knows. And when I ask them today, it will be a "she-said; she-said." I am still going to call, but to figure out what the heck happened, and to let them know some of the issues I have been having. Plus they have become less accepting of the loose vaccination schedule. She is already pushing the MMR combo at 15 mos. He is just 11 mos.
Also, I am not sure when the last time you were there, but they got very busy with a whole slew of new patients, and they eliminated their sick waiting area. When DS had RSV he had to wait in the hallway in a tiny area with a baby that possibly had bronchitis. It made me a little
Please please do not feel badly

Did they call you back last night? Nope, I called a third time to tell them to forget it once DS fell asleep comfortably.

Re: Question about call backs to Ped service & a bit of a long vent
I would get a new ped immediately - the fact that they got a medicine dose (even if it was vitamins) to me is inexcusable - if they mess that up I would be concerned that they would mess up something much more important - The fact that if something serious might be happening and no return call would just reinforce that you need a new ped IMHO.
