Update! Copiague teachers could face repercussions for protesting

Thoughts? I think they exercised their first amendment right and should be protected by the constitution regardless of whether they were right or wrong. Link to story

Update - today was the board meeting and they are not firing the teachers for exercising their first amendment right!

They were within their rights. They were quiet and didn't verbally express anything. There is no law that says you MUST stand for the pledge. I don't think disciplinary action should be taken.

Re: Copiague teachers could face repercussions for protesting

According to the comments there is a teacher with a big Trump/Pence banner hanging. Don't see how this is any different. If that teacher doesn't face any repercussions I don't see how they can do anything to these teachers.

FTR I think they were well within their rights.

Re: Copiague teachers could face repercussions for protesting

Personally? I'd pull my kids from there class. I don't like when teachers feel the need to put there personal opinions on children. I had a 6 grade teacher who would give her opinion all too often about politics and I always felt it was inappropriate and I had less respect for her. I hope they will receive repercussions, they need to understand there is a time and place for everything and they failed to meet the expected standards.

I will also say, this hurts my heart that people are so disrespectful to our flag. So many of my family members have fought, and a few have died, for this country, and that is why we salute our flag, not for idiots like Donald trump. While he calls himself a "patriot", he doesn't know the meaning.

Personal politics does not belong in schools at all. They should be teaching the children facts so when it is time for them, the children can make their own decisions. The person that had a banner was wrong and not standing for the pledge is wrong. It is disrespectful.

Our military also served to protect our right to not be forced to salute the flag. I am thankful we do not live in a nation where we are required to pledge allegiance to anything.

I have students who do not stand for the pledge all the time - it's their right as well and I do not force them to stand.

There is nothing wrong with what they did. They are well within their rights for doing what they did. Yes, many people have fought and died so we can have freedom of speech and the right to protest.

I'll respectfully disagree. Teachers have one of the most important jobs in the world because they have impressionable minds. Where does their opinion end? A PP said someone had a trump/pence sign and I feel they should be held accountable too. I don't want teachers giving my children their political opinions, even if I agree with them, because for every one that I agree with, I'm sure there's one I don't agree with, I'd rather they stick to facts.

I support them having opinions and certainly should feel free to do whatever in their non-work time (attend marches, protests etc), but I agree with some others that they should appear neutral to their students. I think it's great for the issues of the day to be discussed, but they shouldn't be pushing their views on the kiddos.

Re: Copiague teachers could face repercussions for protesting

It was a silent protest, so I see no problem with it. I think if it were verbal, the situation would be different.

I also don't think it's necessary to have a pledge.

I'm really not sure my opinion on the matter. It's a weird time to be a teacher I'm sure. I would have never imagined I'd ever be one to be so adamantly against one of our presidents but here I am. What are you supposed to say, especially as a social studies teacher, when you are discussing current events with your high school students or they are asking for your opinion? They weren't pushing their opinions on anyone, they were using a peaceful method of expressing themselves, something I'm sure they teach their students about.

While I don't think anyone should be forced to say the pledge, I think that it was inappropriate that they knelt. That draws attention to their silent protest. Clearly they wanted the students to know that they were protesting, or else they could have stood silently. I think wanting the students to know they were protesting is inappropriate. The classroom is not the time nor the place for a teacher to be showing their political views. Same with the banner. These teachers should be reprimanded at the very least and potentially let go at the most.

This.

If this were the elementary level I might feel differently however, I think at the high school level where the students have an understanding of the real world, it's a different story.

Those who say "teachers should keep their opinions out of teaching" I guess don't understand what it's like to teach. As a former teacher myself, OF COURSE my own personality, thoughts, likes and dislikes came out in my teaching. I am human, not a robot. That being said, along with that you also have an obligation to be professional as well and you should know what to censor from your students.

In this case, a SILENT "protest" during the pledge is really not out of line. I don't understand the outrage. If anything, it could've been used as a "teachable moment" with their students about one's freedom of speech or the students feelings on what's been going on in government the last few months.

If they were in the front of the class bad mouthing Trump and going on a crazy lunatic tirade that would be inappropriate however, in this case I don't see the issue. High school social studies teachers being an example of our constitutional rights at work is hardly cause for a freak out IMO.

ETA - When I was in high school, my teachers absolutely shared their feelings about topics we were learning about. It's about gaining another perspective and way of looking at things. These aren't babies, they are high school students.............I think teachers can be a little more open with kids of that age.

I teach, and I have spent years covering current events, including this election, and my students have no clue what my personal political beliefs are-at my school were not allowed to discuss politics on a personal level with students.

So, I don't think the protest was right, and I don't think the banner is right either.

I find it amusing that teachers are held to a higher standard than the president. He was able to say whatever offensive thing that came to his mind and he was applauded because he was telling it as is it. However, a teacher can't let their view be known and have a silent protest without fear that parents will be up in arms. Seems like a double standard to me. If your children can hear Trump pretty much say that Muslim is a religion that should be feared and all are terrirists, you can insult woman and the handicap, say things that can cause tension with immigrants, and you can tell his followers To punch someone in the face if they annoy you than your children can handle a teacher sitting in protest. The president should show more tact and realize that he is more influential and is being seen by millions of kids.

And these parents are probably the same people who call liberals snowflakes. I bet if the teachers were cheering for trump, they wouldn't be having a board meeting about it.

But they weren't discussed. It was at most 10 seconds of kneeling in silence. Unless there's something else that happened that hasn't been made public.

My issue with it is that kneeling for the pledge would cause a distraction and derail the rest of the class. It just seems really unprofessional to me to drag kids into a political issue. I'd much rather see a demonstration like that at a school board meeting, or an event where the parents are the audience, rather than the kids.
I would never let my political views be known in my work environment. It seems so risky.

I teach university age students in the American Studies program and we had been discussing this election for 2 years in conversation / writing classes. I never really gave my opinion because I try to do as little talking as possible (they are the ones that need the practice), but I was asked what side I was on and I gave it. However, it's really rare that anyone would support a Republican president here anyway.

Now after the election, I have no problem expressing my feelings on Trump here (in an intelligent way) because that's what the students want. They want to talk about it because it's a serious situation. It also reassures them that not all Americans wanted him.

He's been great for material in my classes. The other day I used some of his language to teach them how to be coherent and not sound like him. We talked about his lack of cohesive devices and fragments, and that that is not the proper way to use English. It was a great lesson.

As long as I don't talk about Scientology (I signed papers saying I have never been involved with that religion), I'm A-OK.

ETA: They are university age, so I think it's a good age for that.

They should absolutely face repercussions. If I were a parent, I would be livid. If they wanted to protest, they can do that on their own time. Not in front of my child.

As far as the Pledge of Allegiance, they don't need to say it. They could have stood there and not participated.

So wait, you wouldn't care that they didn't say the pledge as long as they just "stood there" but because they KNELT and didn't say the pledge, you'd be livid?? Chat Icon Chat Icon
