UPDATE: I know how it happened! Credit card fraud - add me to the list!
This morning I went online to pay a few bills and when I glanced down at my CC balance I had a heart attack. Apparently someone has been taking $1k cash advances every day for the last week, sometimes 2 or 3 a day. Greedy b@stards. They even called the bank stating they were my husband and changed the phone numbers on the account!!!!
I called my bank and started an investigation, cancelled the cards and just did a fraud alert with the credit companies. Fortunately, they have not opened any new accounts in my name yet.
Does anyone know what else I should be doing besides banging my head against the wall?
TIA!
UPDATE: When I got home last night I asked to see DH's card and we realized it expires this month and we never received the replacement. Here I am thinking some tech-saavy person did some craziness to get into my account and it's the oldest fricken trick in the book - they got DH's new card in the mail!! So they had the account number, my address, and the pin number to make the stupid cash advances.
I still think whoever allowed them to change the information should be fired, as well as the person who advised them of the balance on the account because when I spoke to the Fraud Department, the woman mentioned there was a 'bad connection' when my 'husband' called to do all this crap. I'm sorry, but in today's world if you can't hear what the person on the other line is saying, you don't give them the benefit of the doubt.
It honestly makes me feel better though, because at least it's not like someone hacked into my computer and got all my accounts. This is exhausting!
Thanks everyone, for your support!!

I'm so sorry!
How did they take cash advances without the physical card?
Man, this stuff is getting all too common. I hope you get this resolved asap.

My dad suspects it was an inside job. It's crazy because my card is in my wallet, and DH says his card is in his wallet too! What really scares me was how they got his name because the account is in my name only. I added DH to it, but the bills and the statements still only come in my name. I have no idea how this happens.

I agree with your Dad. How else would they get that information. I hope you get this resolved soon and they catch that SOB

That stinks!!!
I would suggest to also call the credit reporting companies to let them know what happened. This way they'll keep an eye out on your identity as well while this is getting investigated.

That's horrible!!!!! I'm sooo sorry.......Thank God you check your accounts frequently.......... I wouldn't rule out an inside job.....I recently had an incident w/ verizon and it turned out to be someone who knew me(won't go there)After my complaint, It immediately went to the fraud dept. and believe me....those people don't take these things lightly. The person was fired and is being charged with criminal activity. I'm sure the banks fraud dept will be on top of this too....Best of luck

wow, i'm really surprised that they were able to call and change the phone numbers on the account. Usually, they send you confirmation emails whenever you make any sort of change. They've got all sorts of checks and balances in place so random people can't call and make changes like that. Definitely sounds like someone who either knows you guys, or someone at the card company.
good luck!

run a credit check. Go to experian.com and you should be able to get a credit report to see if anything was opened in your name w/o your permission or knowing.

So sorry this happened. How were they able to change the phone # w/d a password? Terrible bank for letting them do that. The punishments for id fraud need to be harsher---same people are repeat offenders, and no one cares.

Not only do I get an e-mail from both the credit card companies and the bank, I get letters mailed to my address stating that information was changed. I'm surprised they didn't alert you as well. I'm so sorry this happened to you.

Re: Credit card fraud - add me to the list!
Last week we got a call from Chase because there was an unusually large charge attempted to be made with our card online. Turns out it was for a random office products site and the person tried charging over $3200 to our card...luckily Chase realized it and denied the charge. But we had to stop using that card and now they are sending us a new one with a new number.

Re: Credit card fraud - add me to the list!
We just had the same thing happen to one of our cards 2 weeks ago. There were also charges to geneology companies, DH mentioned it would be really easy to get our Mother's Maiden names, so in addition to a fraud alert, we put a freeze on our credit profiles. That makes so no new accounts can be opened, no one can even pull/ping our credit history for credit purposes.

Wow i am so sorry that this happened to you. Atleast you figured out what had happened and I agree with you with whoever was involved should be fired. I found it odd because when i call my card company they usually ask me for security questions before going forward. I guess they didn't ask in this case but I would write a big complaint to the president of whatever card company it was and demand discipline and changes so that this does not happen again. Thanks for the heads up on it.

It's possible that they didn't get the card from the mail - sometimes our new cards don't show up until right before the old ones expire.

They mailed the card out July 26 (the bank told me)... whoever stole from me first called the bank August 8 and then called again August 15. They got the card somehow. Te only way they could have gotten my DH's name is from the card itself because his name is nowhere else on the account - his name is not even on the bill.
