Re: UPDATE: I made the laundry detergent today!!
I made this shortly after you posted. I didn't grate my soap though, I microwaved it like someone said in the comments and it crumbles.
I don't like it though, leaves a film on the clothes. I only wash in cold water, so maybe that's why. I also left out the Purex Crystals because I didn't like the way any of them smelled. I'm glad I only made a half of a batch.
Let me know how yours comes out!

this was my concern, I too ONLY wash clothes in cold water and sometimes short cycles. Thanks for trying it out and posting your review.

Re: UPDATE: I made the laundry detergent today!!
i bookmarked the recipe you posted and debating trying it out.
if it doesnt make a lot of suds it will probably be good b/c our washer is set up with an ejector pump connected through the waste line. i find tide and and some others to be sooo sudsy i've got suds coming out of the pump.
keep us posted!!

I's actually .90 at Big Lots. I picked up a bar earlier, I'm going to half the recipe since I want to make sure it actually works for us. Stop and Shop has the other bar product she mentions in the blog, it's around $1.79 or so. I couldn't find the Arm & Hammer wash stuff there though. Where did you get that?
I've seen that in Stop & Shop, next to the Borax in the laundry aisle. I've always wondered what you use it for.

Re: UPDATE: I made the laundry detergent today!!
there is another soap recipe on pinterest that you don't have to grate soap for or cook the ingredients, just mix a bunch of dry ingredients, has anyone tried that one?

Re: UPDATE: I made the laundry detergent today!!
I've done a few loads with our detergent and I'm definitely a fan! I haven't noticed any residue at all on the clothes.
I did read a few websites where it said not to do the Zote soap in the microwave, that it didn't work as well. Maybe that was the problem?
I definitely like it though!! We were using the Arm and Hammer with oxyclean and this is as good, if not better than that, IMO.

Maybe, but it turns it into a really fine powder when done that way, so I don't think that's the issue. Do you wash in cold or warm?

I only wash in cold.
I wonder if it's possible that microwaving it changes like the chemical makeup of it or something? I failed chemistry in high school though...

Well it does dry it out, so maybe, who knows lol. Maybe I used too much of it. Maybe I'll try again with a smaller amount

I wish I had the patience to do something like this. But the Tide was calling my name at Target so I threw it in the cart!

Re: UPDATE: I made the laundry detergent today!!
I was intrigued by the idea and made it myself last weekend.
I followed the recipe except I didnt use the whole bottle of smelly crystals. I used 1 pink zote and 1 white -and made my husband grate them. He said white (for whatever reason) grated much easier! It didn't take longer then 10 minutes start to finish.
We've done several loads of laundry, clothes are clean, not too parfumey and I haven't noticed any residue.
Im happy! Id do it again...although I shouldnt have too for a LONG TIME!
