UPDATE: I think my reference just blew it for me...what do you think?
I had a really great interview on Friday...was there for 1.5 hours and really, really liked the place. it's restaurant pr, which I don't have direct experience in, but I do have experience with food products, travel, etc. I never tried to make the guy think that I DID have restaurant experience but I didn't go out of my way to remind him that I didn't....he's got my resume. So anyway, today he emails me to request a reference from a former supervisor so I put him in touch with one. she knows i'm looking and offered to be a ref. so the call didn't come as a surprise. She said she was on the phone with him for awhile, but told me that she told him that restaurant pr would be a learning curve for me. Why did she have to point that out????? Do you think she blew it for me? Honest opinions please....
UPDATE: I don't have the job yet but at least she didn't ruin it. I'm going to see this man again on Monday. Yay!!!!!!

I think it depends on how she phrased her response...If she said it will be a learning curve and new to her, but she's proven to be a fast learner and quickly picked up travel PR (or whatever) when she started with our company, and soon became one of the best workers in the division, that would be a great response and work in your favor. It's probably not news to him that you haven't worked directly with restaurant PR, so just pointing that out isn't bad, but it depends on how she followed that point up...I usually call references on the top 3 candidates.

He called her rather quickly...within an hour of me giving him her info. I hope he calls my other references, too. do you usually call all the references of your top 3 candidates?

Yes, we usually call references on the top 3 before making a decision. We usually try for a few references for each (maybe 3).

No...it should be fine. If he is aware that you don't have direct rest. experience but has faith and confidence in you that you are willing & capable of learning, it should be ok!
