update in post 1 - would this annoy you? cashier

I was in Payless tonight and boots were on BOGO sale, so I got a dressy pair and a winter weather pair. The dressy pair had the 34.99 sale sticker on the box. They were the only 2 pairs in the aisle. 95% of the boots had the sale stickers on the boxes. I took the box with the orange sale sticker on it, and my winter boots up to the register. I KNOW that I took the one with the sale sticker on it. Guy rings up pair #1 while I'm looking for my wallet. He scans the dressy pair and they come up 39.99. I say, "Oh, they're on sale for 34.99" and he gives me a smirky look and shrugs his shoulder. He pretends to look for the orange sticker, but it's nowhere to be found. I pick up the box, etc., take a peek behind the register, and don't see it. I tell him that I am 100% certain that they were on sale, as I had JUST picked up the box and walked literally 10 feet to the register. He says "oh, no, well, if it doesn't have the sticker, it's not on sale..." Of course I retraced my step back to the aisle and it was nowhere to be found and there wasn't another box with a sticker to show him.

He totally took the sticker off the box while I was getting my credit card out. I know it's only $5, but the whole idea of it frustrates me. If it was a mistake for the tag to be on the box, that's one thing, but don't swipe the tag from the box and play dumb.

I have been home for an hour now and I am still perturbed. Would anyone else be annoyed? I almost want to return the whole $60 purchase.

UPDATE:
was at work all day and am just seeing all these replies now. Whoah, I didn't mean to cause drama!!!!

First off, and most importantly, I'd NEVER call and get someone fired, especially not over $5 and certainly not in this economy. He was nasty and snooty, but whatever, that's not my place. I just won't give that store my business anymore.

Secondly, there were 2 pairs of that style in the entire store - I went back to the shelf and checked and there was the one I took with the sticker, and the one without, hence there was no "proof" that they were originally tagged. I know for a fact they were - I was on my phone with a friend and was commenting on the deal and what my total would be while I had them both in my hand.

Sure, maybe it fell off, but he picked up the box and the counter was empty, I peeked behind the register, looked on the floor behind register and by me, retraced my steps - it wasn't there - no real mysterious place for it to have fallen out in plain sight, especially considering he didn't even take the boots out of the box to scan them - just used the gun.

In any event, my question was whether you'd be annoyed or not. Sorry if people thought I was stupid for buying them - as I said, I NEED them for this weekend and have no other opportunity to go shopping (and I was between meetings while I was at that store visit so I couldn't just go elsewhere).

I was just coming to vent and thought some of you would share my frustration. My sincere apologies if I offended anyone, as I seem to have done inadvertantly :(

Re: would this annoy you? sneaky cashier

Send an e-mail to payless corporate and be sure to include all of the numbers on your receipt, so they'll know which cashier it was.

That stinks. Chat Icon

I would send a complaint e-mail / letter. Make sure to include the store location and name of employee, if you have it.

I should have walked out and not bought them, but this is literally the first chance I've had to set foot into a store in weeks and it was something I needed. Dumb, but, I need the winter pair for when we go away this weekend and I have obligations after work tomorrow and Friday.

Devil's advocate....

What does he have to gain by making you miss out on a $5 difference? I don't think they work on commission or anything. Maybe it really did fall off and land under a shelf or something where you didn't see it?

I dunno - just a thought.

not commission, but when I worked in retail we had awards/incentives each month for highest average of items in transactions; highest average transaction total, etc

Yeah, but sometimes the computer's wrong if they didn't change over a sale properly. If there's a price mistake, they should change it for you if the tag is on the box properly. Or at least when I worked retail, that's what we were told to do...

Guess what? Checked online and they are on sale for $5 cheaper than I paid....

i was thinking this, too... not sure what he thought he would gain by doing that. its not like its a private store and hes the owner. i think they have to go by how it rings up in the computer. still weird that the sale tag just dissappeared though...

Totally make a call tomorrow. Tell them that in this economy, someone who smirks like that & gives attitude is the last thing they need in the store.

That would be enough to convince me to send a complaint email & insist on the money back. I also would use the pp's line about in this economy, you don't need sales people like him.

I really don't think it's necessary to try to get someone fired over a $5 mistake when the OP could have gone back to the shelf to see if the same pair of shoes was in a box with the sticker. The OP also could have asked to talk to a manager or just said she didn't want the shoes.

I highly doubt the cashier had anything to gain by not giving the OP a $5 discount. It's just as likely the OP was mistaken about the sticker on the box as it is that the cashier took the sticker off. I see no motivation for the cashier to remove the sticker on purpose.

This situation would have annoyed me, too -- but I would have either tried to rectify it in the store or just not purchased the shoes if it were me.

I agree with this. "In this economy" I would feel awful if I got someone fired for a misunderstanding.

The item would have to be incorrect in the computer AND he would be risking you SEEING him take the tag off. . . seems strange to me.

Hey, I am not saying that people are not dishonest out there - but they usually need some kind of incentive to be.

This is what I was thinking.

But- if you said they had a sticker on them- he should have looked for another pair to either show you that they weren't supposed to have a sticker, or to see that they were indeed on sale.

Sorry this happened Chat Icon

ETA: Print out the shoes w/ the price from the website and bring it back to the store. Ask for a manager and maybe they'll give you the $5 back. Then again, usually websites have something that says prices can be different online vs in store.

Good Luck!

I agree. It sounds frustrating but I really dont think he did it on purpose. There is no reason to.

I completely agree. I used to work in retail and sometimes we'd have something on sale but the price wasn't changed in the computer, and unless I saw the price change sticker/sale notice/etc I couldn't do anything about the price. People change stickers on the boxes. If someone tried to get me fired over something I had no control over, that would sukk.

If I wer you, I would have gotten another box of the same shoe with the sticker and let him ring that box up, in a different size, etc..
