Totally make a call tomorrow. Tell them that in this economy, someone who smirks like that & gives attitude is the last thing they need in the store.

I really don't think it's necessary to try to get someone fired over a $5 mistake when the OP could have gone back to the shelf to see if the same pair of shoes was in a box with the sticker. The OP also could have asked to talk to a manager or just said she didn't want the shoes.

I highly doubt the cashier had anything to gain by not giving the OP a $5 discount. It's just as likely the OP was mistaken about the sticker on the box as it is that the cashier took the sticker off. I see no motivation for the cashier to remove the sticker on purpose.

This situation would have annoyed me, too -- but I would have either tried to rectify it in the store or just not purchased the shoes if it were me.

I completely agree. I used to work in retail and sometimes we'd have something on sale but the price wasn't changed in the computer, and unless I saw the price change sticker/sale notice/etc I couldn't do anything about the price. People change stickers on the boxes. If someone tried to get me fired over something I had no control over, that would sukk.

If I wer you, I would have gotten another box of the same shoe with the sticker and let him ring that box up, in a different size, etc..

It's not the $5 or a misunderstanding that made me say that. It was the OP's sense that she was being hassled and sneered at. I wasn't there, obviously, but I believe that she felt unduly hassled and picked on, and she doesn't need to leave a store feeling like that IMO. I would never get someone fired over a misunderstanding, but I have no patience for people with bad attitudes. We all screw up at work, but we don't necessarily smirk and annoy people as much as the OP seemed to be annoyed.

Re: would this annoy you? sneaky cashier

I was at work all day and am just seeing all these replies now. Whoah, I didn't mean to cause drama!!!!

First off, and most importantly, I'd NEVER call and get someone fired, especially not over $5 and certainly not in this economy. He was nasty and snooty, but whatever, that's not my place. I just won't give that store my business anymore.

Secondly, there were 2 pairs of that style in the entire store - I went back to the shelf and checked and there was the one I took with the sticker, and the one without, hence there was no "proof" that they were originally tagged. I know for a fact they were - I was on my phone with a friend and was commenting on the deal and what my total would be while I had them both in my hand.

Sure, maybe it fell off, but he picked up the box and the counter was empty, I peeked behind the register, looked on the floor behind register and by me, retraced my steps - it wasn't there - no real mysterious place for it to have fallen out in plain sight, especially considering he didn't even take the boots out of the box to scan them - just used the gun.

In any event, my question was whether you'd be annoyed or not. Sorry if people thought I was stupid for buying them - as I said, I NEED them for this weekend and have no other opportunity to go shopping (and I was between meetings while I was at that store visit so I couldn't just go elsewhere).

I was just coming to vent and thought some of you would share my frustration. My sincere apologies if I offended anyone, as I seem to have done inadvertantly :(

Re: update in post 1 - would this annoy you? cashier

I would have been annoyed.

I worked as a cashier for years when I was younger and recently had a second job as a cashier. I was always would at least check the price for the customer and give them the adjustment.

It's not my $5 and the customer leaves happy. That's better then the company having an extra $5 and an annoyed customer, IMO.

I would go back with a print out from online and ask for the adjustment.
