I still think that if you are truly concerned you just discuss it with your ped so he can rule out if anything is wrong or if he is just going at his own pace---we can't make a diagnosis here.

hannah does not sit up on her own. maybe for a few seconds and then she falls. however, all she wants to do is stand. she actually hates to sit. she freaks out about sitting and tries to stand! if i sit behind her she streches out to make me hold her up. LOL! every baby moves at their own pace.

I propped my son up to help him sit up and now he is doing it on his own, but he refuses to crawl. I put him on his belly and he immediately flips over. His favoirite place is still in my arms. They are all so different.

I used the boppy pillow to prop him up and that helped him a lot.

I have a friend that's an OT and she said it's important to have DC crawl before they walk to build up their upper body strength. She helps many kids and one of the common themes she has found among them is that they skipped crawling and went straight to walking. I don't think it's an issues of how long it takes for him to get there, but I would encourage crawling when he seems ready. HTHChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

eta: I think the bumbo would help with sitting up and I think Matthew is still small enough that it's worth it. Jack's 19 lbs and still fits in it.

5 min is a good start! Little by little he'll sit up for longer periods then he wont need to be propped. Little stepsChat Icon

Do you think Toys r us would sell it? and if so would they take a BRU gift card?

I just hope it's not too late for him to start using it at almost 8 months old...

Dont worry about it, every baby is so different. I think the exersaucer is the best for helping them develop muscle tone, etc. If he likes to squirm around and be entertained (dont they all Chat Icon ) I dont see it (the bumbo) as that exciting Chat Icon Its a rubber seat for him to sit in/be propped in, at least the exersaucer has fun stuff for him to look at and there's stuff to motivate him to sit up/look around etc.

Re: UPDATE: Is it ok for an almost 8 month old to...

I'm sure he's fine. My nephew just recently began to sit up on his own because he had low muscle tone and he's 10 months old. It required physical therapy, HOWEVER, the ped. had pointed it out months before my SIL actually got the PT. So, if your ped. hasn't said anything to you, he's probably fine. It's like a switch just flips one day and they do it. I'm sure he's fine. If he was a year old and not sitting up, I'd probably worry then, but he's not even 8 months.

Well it wasn't actually for 2 minutes. I would say more like one and sometimes for a couple of seconds.
