Re: Update on Erin - Just about out of options

Both of my children had feeding tubes for a very long time. Honestly, my kids were on them for a while and it really isn't too bad and I don't think having one in has any side effects (as long as the tube is not being constantly pulled in and out..even with that I think she will be ok). The hardest part is having to leave your child at the hospital, otherwise you will be surprised how much weight she will put on quickly. Good luck!!

ETA: My son had one in for about 2 months and daughter had one in for a little over a month...they are both fine now!

Also, their feeding tubes were inserted via nose and mouth..not surgical.

Re: Update on Erin - Just about out of options

is she getting a feeding tube that will be inserted into her nose? like a weighted feeding tube? or a surgically placed tube?
is the problem that she has terrible reflux? she spits up most of her food? Are they talking about giving her a fundoplication??

i'm sorry.. i don't remember your postings about problems she was having and i'm sure you've seen specialists already.. personally i would get another opinion before surgery...
FM if you want.. i am a nICU nurse and see these tubes all the time!

No advice except to say that having a feeding tube (as long as you will be able to continue to feed her) will give you a huge peace of mind while you figure out how to resolve the issues she does have - whether it's a second opinon or your own solution.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Could she be treated for acid reflux? Maybe that is why she is spitting up so much. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Update on Erin - Just about out of options

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon i hope you figure out a solution and that your daughter improves! have they done a swallow study (in radiology)? if she gets the NG tube, be sure to keep her eating orally as much as possible and make sure she continues to get plenty of oral stimulation (teethers, etc.). my thought on the tube, is that while it will get a greater quantity of food into her, she will probably still have the spitting up/reflux issue.

Re: Update on Erin - Just about out of options

I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. And your poor little girlChat Icon

Just want to share. DS has always had horrible reflux and feeding issues. While in the NICU (9 weeks) he had an NG tube for most of that time. Back then it wasn't too bad. But before we left the hospital, they wanted to surgically place a G-tube so he they knew he would eat. We got him to eat enough & narrowly escaped that.

We have revisited that decision from time to time because DS eats pretty well now, but at times his horrible reflux and gastro issues (slow motility) have caused him to not gain/lose weight. He's small for his age (he's 28 mos now), but that's how it is at least for now. Something to think about- there are not many side effects from the surgery (not sure if you meant surgery or just an ng tube), EXCEPT more reflux. Do they know what's causing the reflux? There are different tests they can run to help figure out the issues. We see a motility specialist in addition to Gastro. Because DS's reflux is so bad we opted to avoid the surgery as long as we could and if it turned out to be ABSOLUTELY necessary, we would then do it.

We feed DS smaller amounts, more often and for a while we actually got up during the night at least once to give him a bottle for the extra calories. He gained weight from that. There are still times he loses weight, but we just make sure it gets better in a reasonable amt of time.

This is what was right for us, doesn't mean that the tube is not right for you. DS has also had other unrelated surgeries, so we'd rather avoid yet another one. Just thought it might help to hear some of what we've gone through.

Please feel free to FM me anytimeChat Icon

ETA: We were also very pressured at times to do a G-tube, but don't do it just because they're pushing you to do it. Go with your gut. And if she does need it, it's okay & totally reversibleChat Icon
