Update-Potty Training Question, anyone have a DC who refused to poop on the potty?

My DD is 2.5 and has been trained for pee with no problems for about 3 weeks now. She's in underwear all day. However, she downright refuses to poop on the potty. I think she's now witholding it, today was the 4th day that she hasn't gone. I know she has to go, but she won't. I've let her pick out toys and told her she can have them once she poops on the potty, tried candy.

If your child had a similar issue how long was it before they just let go and did it? I think she's afraid. I'm trying not to make a big thing of it because I know she won't be holding her poo in forever, but I hate when she goes days like this.

Tues PM
After finally going yesterday in a pull up after her nap, she went to school today and pooped on the potty there!!! When her teacher told me I was shocked, and asked how she got her to do it..and the teacher said she just went on her own. Chat Icon Hopefully it continues at home! Thanks everyone for the advice. My brother was like that. He was pee pee trained by 2 but refused to go poop in the potty. They tried candy and small toys. He would hand my Mom a diaper everyday and then do his business and go back into underwear. The dr said he would do it when he was ready. After a few months, my parents told him that he would get a big boy bike when he went in the potty. Within a week he was completely trained and never had an issue after wards. I think it is a control issue with some kids. Don't let her hold it in for too long or she will end up getting constipated and then that can cause more problems. She can get impacted and that is not good...Maye just have her sit on the potty for a while after a big meal and see what happens...

Thanks! I don't want to give her a diaper for it because I feel like she'll never go on the potty. She'll just learn to ask for a diaper to go. I don't even care if she goes in the underwear at this point! Ugh. Hopefully she'll come around soon.

Re: Potty Training Question, anyone have a DC who refused to poop on the potty?

DD didn't outright refuse but we had a lot of issues with withholding and for a while she was only going in her pull-up at night.

I highly recommend a reward chart with a big reward to work toward with smaller ones along the way. DD gets a few M&M's for each poop in the potty. Once she is fully going in the potty only she gets to pick a restaurant for us to go to for a celebration. She was potty trained in April, turned 3 in August and we're just about there.

I love, and so does she the book "It Hurts When I Poop" It really helped her and she learned a lot too. She asked me the other day while peeking behind the refrigerator what it's intestines do.

Try giving her some juice or food that will "make" her go...If she goes in her underwear, she may keep doing that for a while..My friends son did that for almost 3 months before she could get him to go on the potty. Makes for difficult days...

We are there too!

DS was actually pee pee trained in 1 day (about 6 weeks ago) but he had only gone poop 3x in that period on the potty!

He was totally witholding and we tried everything...tough love, rewards, toys, candy, charts, tons of fruit and juices...nothing was getting this kid to go. And then after up to 5 days of nothing he would cry while pooping in his pull up.

I called his ped, who put him on a stool softener. She said first it would help the poops to soften and make it less difficult for him also he wouldnt be able to hold it in. Then it will also retrain his thinking that pooping hurts.
Finally she said for now, let him decide where he goes, potty, diaper, pull up...just not underwear.

So thats where we are. I am waiting it out until he becomes more regular and then we will try poop training again!

GL!

Honestly, I would be very careful with this so you do not end up seeing a GI doctor down the road. Withholding can lead to long term issues.

Re: Potty Training Question, anyone have a DC who refused to poop on the potty?

DS has been completely pee pee potty trained day and night for about 8 months now (he was 2.5 when he started). One day he just told me he was going to pee pee in the potty and that was it. There really was no training involved. Now, for the past few months he goes completely on his own in the regular toilet standing up. I don't need to even be in the room. Yet, we have yet to even once poop in the potty. Right from day one he told me that he couldn't poop on the potty b/c it would hurt. I tried EVERYTHING since then to get him to and he refuses. He is underwear 24/7 and just tells me he needs a pull up when he has to go - he goes, and then goes back in the underwear. Before this routine he would literally hold it in for days. If I push to hard suggesting things again, holds it in for days. I have offered every reward and incentive imaginable and he still won't go. Tried every suggestion out there. And, all this, from a kid that pee pee trained himself in one day. He even wears underwear at night!

Anyway, as a pp said - I don't want to create issues for him. For now, I've decided when he is ready he will go and although I try to gently encourage it - I don't push it.

That said, if anyone has ANY advice I'd love to hear it!

Thank you everyone for the stories and advice. I definitely don't want her to have a long term problem. Hopefully she'll go today.

This was Jack for months. He was pee trained in August, and just over the last couple of weeks has he been consistently pooping on the potty.

He would hold it in.
He would poop in his underwear.
He would wait until he had a pullup on for nap or bedtime and poop then.

I upped the prizes and gave him a toy every time he pooped on the potty. Big toys that he wanted. For a week straight we did this, and then we almost went broke, and had to break him of his toy addiction Chat Icon (seriously, we did Chat Icon )

One day I told him no more toys for pooping, only Skittles. Thankfully that has been working and he's doing great now.

The only thing I can tell you is to be patient. It's really the most awful thing and I NEVER thought he would poop on the toilet, but thankfully he got the hang of it! Chat Icon

I agree. I would give him things to try to catch him pooping and put him on the toilet.

That is exactly what she's doing. I've even busted out Christmas gifts-things she would love, showed them to her and said we can play with this when you poop. She said goodbye to the toys.Chat Icon out of desperation the other day I took her 5 month old sisters poo, put it in the potty and held her on there and called her in and said look what your sister did!!! And she clapped for her and said yay-and told me to give her the toy (that I offered her). She's such a thickhead!!

I was just in your shoes so I know how frustrating it is. The only thing I can tell you to do is ride it out. She will poop on the potty eventually. Keep praising her. When she poops in her underwear bring it to the toilet and tell her that this is where poopy goes from now on. She will get it, maybe not today - or next week - but it will happen!
