[Update] Put a deposit down on the CR-V last night! Wheee!

So my Passat is being a b*tch again and we're tired of putting money into a car to keep it running till the next thing happens. I'm going to the mechanic with it tomorrow but we're also going to go to the Toyota and Honda dealers to test drive the RAV4 and the CR-V.

We have narrowed it down to those two so we don't need other suggestions, just negative criticism. Chat Icon Seriously, everything looks great on these vehicles - the reliability is top-notch for both, they're the perfect size, the gas mileage is the same as our CAR and we've got a decision to make.

Right off the biggest difference for me is the tailgate on the RAV4 swings open to the side, not up. Also, the CR-V has that blind spot in the back top corner because of the way they styled it.

Any more constructive criticism you could dish out? Chat Icon

ALSO! Does anyone have a salesperson at the dealer in Smithtown they'd like to recommend?

----------------------------

Update 9/3...

We went for a test drive last night and were pretty happy with it! I took note of what people said about the front seats not being that comfortable for large people but it felt pretty good to me.

It's too bad the passenger seat doesn't have as many options as the drivers seat does (electric, adjustable height/tilt/lumbar), but we'll live with that. When I sat in the passenger seat, it was still pretty comfortable.

I liked the climate control options and that you could set one temperature for the driver and a different one for the passenger. We've never had temperature control air before, much less separate settings for driver/passenger.

We drove it with the AC on to see how the pickup compared, and didn't feel any lag at all. Believe it or not, for normal driving, it has the same or more pep than our turbo engine in the VW.

The back seat is not that comfortable, and definitely not for 3 adults with wide @sses like mine Chat Icon but since we're not going to be back there and don't take long trips with other adults or children often, we can live with it.

We're definitely not having the after-market items done at the dealer. My mechanic can do everything except the remote starter and I got a recco for someone local for that (I started a separate thread to see if anyone else knows them).

The only sticking point is... I might not be able to get my Green Tea color. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

There is ONE of them and they're going to call the dealer today to see if they'll do a trade. If not, we will get the Glacier Blue color that's due into the dealer today or tomorrow. We put a deposit down so there's no way anyone is pulling it out from under us. Oh and they gave us a good price on our trade in considering the issues it has too.

All in all, been a good experience so far! I'll recommend my salesperson's names once we're done with the deal, if everything remains this good.

THANK YOU again for all your replies, I really appreciate them. You all helped me tremendously to make an informed decision here. You're the shiznit. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Looking for negativity only! RAV4 & CR-V...

We have a 2004 Rav4 and LOVE it..
however, you are correct about the door opening to the side - we tailgate at Mets games a lot and i wish that the door opened up, not to the side.
Other than that.. no complaints at all. It's been a fantastic vehicle so far!
Personally, we liked the look of the Rav4 over the Accord, that's how we chose Chat Icon

Re: Looking for negativity only! RAV4 & CR-V...

A few years ago, we were deciding between a Subaru Forester and the CR-V. I also test drove a Rav4 and didn't really like the way it handled as much.

Anyway, two of the things we didn't like about the CR-V was that the hatch opened to the side and the spare tire was on the outside. We were parking on the street in Queens at the time and I knew it would be a problem getting stuff out of the back when we parallel parked. I also saw a few cars in our neighborhood that seemed to be missing a spare from the back and I wondered if in our particular neighborhood, the spare would get stolen. If they changed the CR-V to have a hatch that opens up, I would consider it again. It's a great car/SUV.

Re: Looking for negativity only! RAV4 & CR-V...

I have driven both vehicles and cleaned both vehicles and I personally love the Rav4. The one down fall is that the rear door swings open to the side and in tight parking spots you may have a hard time opening it. Out of the two I would get the RAV 4 anyway...

Re: Looking for negativity only! RAV4 & CR-V...

My bro just got a Rav4 from Smithtown & loves it...will ask him his salesperson...i know he shopped around & they had the best price. I drove it and loved the handling & pickup...he has a 6 cylinder...he took it up to New Hampshire & it did well & got good gas mileage and he said it was comfortable even on the long drive. I also thought it had good visibility...drove a CRV a few years ago & didn't like some of the blind spots but that was the older style.

They did. The hatch opens up and the spare is underneath the vehicle now, not on the back. Shall I let you know what pricing I get? Chat Icon

Re: Looking for negativity only! RAV4 & CR-V...

I have a CR-V and love it.

You want cons so I will tell you.

The paint scratches VERY easily. I am not sure if it's an Honda issue or not. I have the icy blue color and after 2+ years, there are minute surface scratches. A friend had an older silver Civic and she had said she had similar issues.

The scratches aren't a paint defect. I can tell you where they come from. They come from going to the brush less car washes, and not applying enough wax to the paint surface.

I have had 4 Honda's and I never had any problems with the paint.

If you want, I can remove all of those minute scratches for you.

Re: Looking for negativity only! RAV4 & CR-V...

Thanks Sophie! Did it come with those little jars of extra paint for touch ups? I know you don't want the scratches at all, I'm just thinking ahead. The paint on my VW started flaking off within 3 years of owning it. Flaking OFF! That made me so Chat Icon!!

For anyone that does have a CR-V, there are a few questions I'm going to ask later when we go, or if you know the answer, I'd love to hear it! Chat Icon

1. Can you play your iPod through the stereo speakers? The website says there's a hookup, I just want to make sure it's not just a charger or something.

2. We don't want the Nav system but since we're buying from available stock, we might have to. Do they give you any months subscription free?

3. Ditto on the XM Radio, free subscription at all?

4. Does the driver's seat have memory settings for Driver 1 and Driver 2?

5. Is a remote start available?

6. I'm reading from Kelley Blue Book that they're so competitively priced that you can't expect much savings from sticker. What was your experience?

Yesterday I was sick to my stomach over this. Today I'm kind of excited. Chat Icon

I have an 09 CRV... One thing I hate about it is that there is no center console type thing that is solid. Meaning that if I put a water bottle down on the ground to reach in the back for a second, there is a chance my water bottle will go on the drivers side and possibly could get stuck under a pedal. Otherwise I love it.

No idea about the IPOD as I've never tried. LOVE the NAV! OMG never would I ever have a car again without one, and I never paid a dime a month for it. I've had this car since Feb. I got XM for free for 3 months, then got a notice to extend for $5 a month for a year. No memory seating as far as I know. We got railroaded in price, honestly we just were way to rushed, and felt trapped, I won't return to the dealer I went to, but this was in NJ so no worries lol. Good luck!! Oh and the paint is good on our car, not a scratch or anything, I agree about the car wash thing.

I love my CR-V! The only negative I can think of is my DH thinks the passenger seat is a little small.

ETA- Also, I haven't had any problems with paint chipping. Just normal wear and tear small bumps and dings from parking lots and the LIE!

Really on the no console thing in the 09? I have a 07 CR-V and have a console in between the driver and passenger seat with two cup holders and a storage compartment where I keep my CDs.

I also had a 3 month free subscription for the XM radio, I loved it so much though that I kept it and pay every 3 years or something.

I have the the model with all the bells and whistles, there is no memory seating though (I believe the "sister" acura has it though)

No charge for the NAV system, I do know I that don't know HOW I ever lived without it.

It does have the IPOD hook up, but we never had it installed. I have alot of my playlists anyway that I burned onto CDs that I keep in the CD changer, so it's no big deal.

Agreed with Scott. I have a silver 2002 Civic and a dark red 2007 CR-V. No problems with the paint scratching more easily than any other cars.

FWIW, I love my CR-V. The blind spot really isn't a problem -- you adjust, as you do to the blind spots in any cars. If you look over your shoulder when changing lanes like you're supposed to, the blind spot isn't an issue.

I've found that the cup holders in my CR-V are much, MUCH better than the ones in my Civic. In the Civic, full water bottles fall out. In my CR-V, they stay put. (I guess this doesn't help if you have a big water bottle that doesn't fit in them, though.) Our center console would hold a water bottle, though...

I don't have the built in Nav, so I can't tell you. Satellite radio comes with 3 months free, then you pay XM/Sirius if you want to continue. Fees vary based on your plans -- but you can usually get it for VERY cheap if you just keep bargaining / get a longer term contract / set up auto payments.

Yes, you can play your Ipod.

Our driver's seat doesn't have memory for Driver 1 and Driver 2. Not sure if that's different in the 2008s or 2009s. We have an '07.

We don't have remote start, but I'm pretty sure it's available. If not, you can get it installed at a dealership.

I got my Civic below invoice when I got it -- I'm pretty good at negotiating car prices. We were not very successful getting much off sticker on the CR-V. We bought it in 2007, when the body style changed and demand was high, so that may have had something to do with it. We had a hard time finding a dealership that even had them in stock at that time.

It doesn't hurt to try. However, for the quality, they are very competitively priced, I think. I'd try to avoid paying full sticker price, though.

Good luck with your decision.

I only test drove both cars but the negativity toward the CRV would be that I think it's underpowered.

I've had both Hondas and Toyotas and I prefer Honda's service over Toyota.

How's that for making you nuts?

I wish it came in a V6, but it still has enough power for me. It's got a lot more power than my 4 cyl Civic at least.

Re: Looking for negativity only! RAV4 & CR-V...

I have the 09 cr-v-have had it for 2 months and love it.

I switched from an 06 Accord- V6- so in a way it was a trade down (it's less expensive) and going from the v6 to the 4 cyl really was a little bit of an adustment- but I do find after 2 months of driving, that it is powered enough, even with AC- to jump on the southern state, LIE, etc. w/o any problems.

There is a center console for water bottles- it flips down though- maybe it's a new feature?

I have the reg model- no bells and whistles beyond the power windows, cruise control... I have manual seats b/c I didn't feel like paying crazy extra money for it when I'd really be the only driver (DH has a honda civic- also base model).

The iPod port is standard to the vehicle and we love it!!!

I"m a big honda fan.. so of course that's the one I would go with!

But I believe the 4 cylinder means it's better on gas.

I have a cr-v EX from 2003.

I have NO complaints about my car whatsoever. I do have an "older" model, but with almost 100K miles on it it still runs GREAT. I also have had WONDERFUL experiences with service. I had it serviced for years at Honda City in Levittown. I bought a long time ago, but I bought a dealer's demo car that had 2,000 miles on it and got it for below invoice. My salesman actually commented that I was getting a better deal on MY car than HE did being an employee there - LOL!

Good luck and have fun shopping!!!

ETA: I also drove a Toyota Celica for a few years before my CR-V. With the same amount of mileage I have now on my Honda, the Celica's Air Conditioning went, Radio stopped working, etc. I have none of those problems with my Honda!

I know I'm not comparing models, but it was enough to turn me off to Toyota as a brand.

I also wanted to give this website:

Honda Accessories

I used it to negotiate cheaper add-ons for my Honda (like trunk storage cover, winter floor mats, roof rack). The dealer was charging an INSANE amount for these things. When I showed him that this website was only charging $199 for a genuine Honda roof rack (back in 2003), his price came down immediately Chat Icon

No, it's not deep scratches. There are like a thin surface scratch. Like Scott said they probably would be removed easily. I guess with a surface wax/repair and buffed.

There is no paint flaking off.

And my friend had a Honda and the same thing happen to her. At the time, I did not have my Honda and wondered why it happened to her car.

Probably the number one reason I didn't get it. I wish it did. Other 4cyl Hondas didn't feel that way to me. Funny.

I wish it came in a V6, but it still has enough power for me. It's got a lot more power than my 4 cyl Civic at least.

that's true..bigger engine. I was coming from a 4cyl Accord and it seemed underpowered to me.

I now have a 6cyl Camry and I will never go back!
