But I believe the 4 cylinder means it's better on gas.

I'm absolutely ready for that, and even if the 6 cyl was available, we wouldn't buy it. We are trying to be responsible about this change. Believe it or not, the CR-V gets the same mileage as my car (it has a turbo engine). I've been putting premium in my car for 5 years as well as synthetic oil. It's going to be refreshing to see that difference in cost of ownership!!

Great feedback everyone, thanks. Chat Icon

I have a CR-V and love it.

You want cons so I will tell you.

The paint scratches VERY easily. I am not sure if it's an Honda issue or not. I have the icy blue color and after 2+ years, there are minute surface scratches. A friend had an older silver Civic and she had said she had similar issues.

The scratches aren't a paint defect. I can tell you where they come from. They come from going to the brush less car washes, and not applying enough wax to the paint surface.

I have had 4 Honda's and I never had any problems with the paint.

If you want, I can remove all of those minute scratches for you.

Sorry to hijack your thread.
Scott

Agreed with Scott. I have a silver 2002 Civic and a dark red 2007 CR-V. No problems with the paint scratching more easily than any other cars.

FWIW, I love my CR-V. The blind spot really isn't a problem -- you adjust, as you do to the blind spots in any cars. If you look over your shoulder when changing lanes like you're supposed to, the blind spot isn't an issue.

I agree--we have a few light scratches, but our CRV is almost 6 years old, and we used to have a very tight space in an apartment parking lot.

I do need to look over my shoulder switching lanes, but as pp's noted, you are supposed to do this anyway.

So my Passat is being a b*tch again and we're tired of putting money into a car to keep it running till the next thing happens. I'm going to the mechanic with it tomorrow but we're also going to go to the Toyota and Honda dealers to test drive the RAV4 and the CR-V.

We have narrowed it down to those two so we don't need other suggestions, just negative criticism. Chat Icon Seriously, everything looks great on these vehicles - the reliability is top-notch for both, they're the perfect size, the gas mileage is the same as our CAR and we've got a decision to make.

Right off the biggest difference for me is the tailgate on the RAV4 swings open to the side, not up. Also, the CR-V has that blind spot in the back top corner because of the way they styled it.

Any more constructive criticism you could dish out? Chat Icon

ALSO! Does anyone have a salesperson at the dealer in Smithtown they'd like to recommend?

This was my life exactly three years ago, right down to the Passat not working and the choice between the Rav4 and the CR-V. We went with the Rav. I actually love the way the trunk swings open to the side -- makes loading things in much easier.

Sorry -- nothing negative here. I'm glad we got the Rav. Chat Icon

Honestly, I have driven both a V8 and a 6 cyl prior to the CRV and never felt underpower. It has great pick up to merge on the parkways, etc... I was quite surprised actually when I first tried it out.

I have the AWD. The gas mileage is not of a Civic. On the parkways I usually average 24 mpg. On longer trips, 27-28mpg. Closer to 21-22mpg city driving.

Negativity only. Hmmm. A RAV4 isn't a CRV. See, that's negative. Chat Icon

We were able to negotiate a little bit- but we leased- and we were leasing 2 cars at once (CR-V and Civic)

Susan's post reminded me of one thing I can say is negative about the CR-V -- it doesn't come in a V6.

Probably the number one reason I didn't get it. I wish it did. Other 4cyl Hondas didn't feel that way to me. Funny.

I wish it came in a V6, but it still has enough power for me. It's got a lot more power than my 4 cyl Civic at least.

that's true..bigger engine. I was coming from a 4cyl Accord and it seemed underpowered to me.

I now have a 6cyl Camry and I will never go back!

we had 4 cyl honda accord and now we have 6 cyl rav4 and honestly we dont see that much difference in gas mileage... plus we hated dealing with honda dealerships, toyota's maintenance is so much easier, they send us a lot of coupons...

Re: Looking for negativity only! RAV4 & CR-V...

We were debating between three cars when we bought. These two ypu are choosing between and the Hyundai Tuscon. We didn't like the Rav4 because of the door swining out to the side. DH was extremely against this. Also I forget if it is just one or both of them but we didn't like the tire on the outside either. We didn't like the rounded style of the CRV either, we wanted something more square. We ended up with the Tuscon. (Not trying to give you a choice, just explaining why we didn't like the two you are deciding between.)

Re: Looking for negativity only! RAV4 & CR-V...

Soooo we just got back. We didn't get the hard sell from the salesperson, he seems nice enough. He's quoting us $600 over dealer cost which isn't TOO bad.

But the after market items... Chat Icon He took a gander at my notebook as I was reading it and saw the prices I had written there. He said they're so low because they don't include installation. I can see that. But here's the breakdown:

Item - Dealer price / Internet price

Fog lights - $547. / $243.60
Roof rack - $372.80 / $202.80
Body side moldings - $318. / $171.60
Auto Dim rearview mirror - $479.20 / $235.

That's a difference of $863.91! I know there's labor involved but assuming $85. an hour for a mechanic, that would mean 10 hours of work for these items?

Has anyone ever had after market items done by someone? Is it worth it to not have any of this installed and just go somewhere else?

Thanks guys. We're going back to test drive tomorrow and then we'll wheel and deal on Thursday when the salesman is back in.

Not on the CRV but we did on my previous car. I had the remove starter installed by someone else. So much cheaper.

Re: Looking for negativity only! RAV4 & CR-V...

we have both cars.

we recently gave back our RAV-4 when the lease was up - wasn't thrilled with it. i mean, it is reliable and drives OK but the brakes, handling, and overall driving especially the acceleration has NOTHING on the CR-V. the CR-V has the V-tech engine which gives you just enough power. i didn't feel like i had enough with the RAV-4.

i didn't care for the handling or the brakes. the only way it was better than the CR-V was in the snow - i felt it handled a little better but the CR-V was still good. we love our honda and will probably buy it out at the end of the lease or get a new one.

HTH!

I didn't read what anyone else wrote so I apologize if this is redundant. I test drove the rav4 and really did not like the way it rode. It was a VERY bumpy ride and it was the first car I ruled out on my search for a new car. The cr-v was nice, and rode pretty smoothly but I've heard that the backseat is very uncomfortable and I also didn't like the design of the interior of the car.

One of my friends is deciding between those two too – the only other thing about the Rav 4 is not only does it open to the side, it opens up from the driver’s side – so if you’re parallel parked and are trying to load things from a sidewalk it’s really annoying.

actually DH rides in the back seat sometimes w/ my DD for fun- he's 6 ft and 230 and says it's comfortable (we have cr-v)
