UPDATE: remind me why you should crate train? VENT
UPDATE ON PAGE 2
I'm having issues...
so i've always talked to people about having kids, etc. And i've always said that sometimes it's so unfair when people who are such pains in the a*ses, have the easiest labor/delivery and i'd be the one to be in labor for 19 hours. And i'd be the one to have the cholicky (sp??) baby.
Well... I'm pretty positive that is going to happen to me. Why you ask???
Because Jedi just won't stop. He cried and cried and cried last night when put in the crate. Others have said that it has only taken a week at most for the puppy to become okay with the crate.
SO WHY THE H*LL IS IT TAKING SO LONG FOR US AND JEDI??? And everything i do i feel like, is wrong and i feel horrible doing it. I feel horrible that he's sick right now and when he cries in his crate, he just gets worse. But i also need my sleep and sanity back!
And wouldn't you know it that my husband has NO PROBLEM falling asleep, regardless of the screeching, crying, biting the crate, growling, etc. D*MN b*stard!!! And everytime i hear a peep come from Jedi... i'm up!
Last night my husband was like "why don't you go down on the couch and go to sleep?" I was like... "Are you kidding? You're sleeping through this bullsh*t and therefore, who's going to wake up when he cries to go the bathroom in the middle of the night... BECAUSE IT HASN'T BEEN YOU!" Granted he's more than happy to take him out in the middle of the night, but only after i wake him up and ask him to.
I just don't know what to do anymore. I really don't. We've done everything!!!!! I'm literally ready to break down and just let him sleep with us.
So can anyone tell me what the big deal is again with him sleeping with us?
Vent over.

Re: remind me why you should crate train? VENT
Personally I don't see what the big deal is with having him sleep with you. Cooper sleeps with us because we too had a hard time leaving him the crate overnight. Now, he loves being in his crate during the day and when we're home (he hangs out in there like it's his room, plays with toys, takes a snooze), but he likes to sleep with us at night, sometimes he'll sleep in his own bed that right next to our bed.
Truthfully, you have to do whatever works for you.
Good luck!

Re: remind me why you should crate train? VENT
Where do you have the crate? Even though we never needed to do this, it was recommended to us when we first got Gunner that if he was not doing well in the crate with a blanket with his litter mates scent on it (which I don't know if you have), that putting the crate in the bedroom right next to the bed where he could smell/see/hear you, would calm him down. Once he was doing good, you could slowly move the crate to where you wanted it to be. While Gunner was puppy and he overall did well in the crate, there were nights in the first month he'd wake up in the middle of the night crying. I'd go into the kitchen and toss around one of his toys for like 15min, he'd get totally pooped again and go right back to sleep. Good Luck!

yeah i have so to speak. They have a huge website with a forum section that they monitor, give advice, others give advice, etc.
But we've done all that we were told to do. We are running out of options and they say to just stick with it. But for how long???? 2 weeks? a month? 2 months?

We've done everything! We've put in one of our tshirts for the scent, put numerous treats in there, the crate is in our bedroom, i've tried putting my finger in the crate while he's in there to calm him down, i've tried sleeping next to him, the ticking clock... and nothing works! Nothing makes a difference!

oh and i'd love to have him sleep with us but so many people say no that we shouldn't.
The thing is... i'm starting to wonder if he has separation anxiety in general. I mean during the day if we leave him, we gate off the bathroom, put in some toys, food/water, crate and he'll still cry for some time.
One morning because my husband was working a midnight shift and i had to get ready for work in the a.m... i brought him in the bathroom with me while i showered, got ready, etc and he cried while i was in the shower.

i put quinn in a crate the first night and couldn't stand the crying - i felt too bad, so i gave in and let him sleep in the bed with us. have ever since. and at this point, i am the one that can't sleep without him! i'm not sure what the problem with it is... everyone in my family that has dogs or has had dogs always let them sleep in bed with them and there's never been a problem

boogie sleeps with us too- but when he was a puppy and we were training him , he slept in the crate!
I am so sorry Jedi is being difficult for you! It did take Boogie two weeks to stop his crying! Does JEDI ever fall asleep? or is it constant all night long? Did you ask his vet what to do too? He might have suggestions!
Good luck!

the problem is that he'll fall asleep after about 2-3 hours. But by the time he falls asleep... he needs to go to the bathroom shortly after since his bladder isn't that big yet. So then the process begins all over again when he's put back in the crate.

Re: remind me why you should crate train? VENT
Just let him sleep with you then... it's not a bad thing... every trainer will tell you it is and they have their reasons but they don't have to lay awake at night with a crying dog, you do... so you do what's best for him... he'll love sleeping with his mom and dad and you guys will love it too.... My FH has a hard time falingl asleep without Cooper in bed.

As long as he won't go to the bathroom in your bed, I would let him sleep with you.

As long as he won't go to the bathroom in your bed, I would let him sleep with you. ITA. And make sure he is UTD on his shots. Until I found out I was PG we leet the Pug & the Shiba sleep in the bed with us. Neither of them ever really adjusted to the crate as their den.
If it is making the dog stressed & you not enjoy the company of the dog, then IMO it is not worth it.
It def sounds like he is having some separation anxiety issues too

Re: remind me why you should crate train? VENT
i just want to say thanks to mskimmy98!!!
She made a very good point as to why you don't let them sleep in your bed. She said that right now they're cute puppies, soft and they smell good. But as they get older, they will get dirtier and dirtier and do you really want him still sleeping in your bed?? My answer: probably not!
she also brought up a good point...
that my husband and i are at a disadvantage somewhat because there is always someone home. There is only 1 week out of the month that we both work day shifts. Now the majority of people work monday-friday during the day and therefore, they have no choice but to put the puppy in the crate for 8 hours each day, 5 days a week... which then means that the puppy gets used to it quicker. But because we're home... he only is crated at night and is taking longer to get used to it!
DUH! why didn't i think of that?

I can only say that my dog is 60 pounds and we love having her sleep in the bed with us But, I wouldn't do it with a puppy only because you may have an issue with the puppy going to the bathroom in the bed.

Re: remind me why you should crate train? VENT
What if you leave puppy confined to the bathroom instead of in the crate?
Or I agree -- if Jedi doesn't pee in the bed or your room, try letting him sleep with you.
Honestly, I was NEVER skeeved by my 90-lb. lab when he slept with us -- I just made him sleep on top of the covers. If anything they are cleaner as they get older -- Scout (my puppy) still eats poop so there is no WAY I would let him in my bed right now....

Well Jedi has slept with us a few times (only in the morning after we walk him, but want to sleep another houror so) and he loves to either cuddle right by our chest/neck or he likes to go under the comforter and snuggle by your legs. So i'm pretty positive that he wouldn't pee in the bed.
we have left Jedi confined to the bathroom but he still cries.

Re: remind me why you should crate train? VENT
We let our beagle sleep with us and have since about a week after we got her. We were having the same issues that you are having with Jedi and one morning DH brought her to bed with him after I left to work and it worked. She has never gone to the bathroom in our bed or the bedroom (she does wake me to go in the middle of the night) and we are all more comfortable.
Maggie plays outside, but we don't have any grass (crazy landlords hate grass and bricked over the backyard ) so she doesn't really get particularly dirty.
We are also similar b/c DH works 3:30pm-11:30pm and I work the usual 9-5 and DH wasn't working at all when we got Maggie. She got used to the crate tho and she actually goes in there without any type of fight or tears when she sees us putting our coats to go some where. She doesn't like chew toys or bones in there, just one of DH's old sweatshirts to sleep on (funny thing is, she drags it out if SHE wants it washed!)
It will happen, how old is he? Usually when they are around 6 months they start to pick things up and settle into more of a routine.

he's 3 months old. I think we're going to give the crate training a bit more time and see how it goes.
Worse comes to worse, we'll have to put him in his crate in one of our other bedrooms and shut the door (that way we can maybe get some sleep and not be tempted to take him out). It's just hard... especially since he's sick right now. Being in the crate just upsets him and makes his cold worse.

You shouldn't put him in a separate room... dogs have a pack mentality, they like to feel part of a pack and when he's in the room with you, even though he's whining in his crate, he feels like he's part of a pack.
I guess considering your working situation, it will take him longer, perhaps try leaving him in the crate for a few hours every day even when you are home.
Aww, poor Jedi... give him a scratch for me... good luck!

I agree that dogs have a pack mentality, which is such a great thing. But when we first got Maggie, we put her crate outside our bedroom door and left the door open so she could see in, but she wasn't in the room with us. It was a PITA having hte crate in the hallway, but kind of a compromise, you know?
He will start to "get" thing in the next couple of months. We got Mags when she was 4 months and by 6 she didn't hate the crate, she was trained, etc, etc. But until then (and sometimes now) it seems like one step foward, two steps back.

We had the same problem with our Freddy. We put a large towel over the cage and it did the trick. after he got used to being in the cage at night we were able to stop covering the cage. every once in a while to this day (he's 1 1/2) he'll have a bad night and we'll put the towel over his cage and he goes right to sleep.
