any updates? how did Jedi do?
well we'll see tonight. Little by little we've been putting him in his crate during the day while one of us is home or not home, etc. Tonight we're going to try and put a blanket over his crate, we're also going to get a spray bottle (we were given advice to spray him everytime he cries), and we bought this Comfort Zone plug in for dogs (it gives off a dog appeasing pheromone. Hey we're willing to try anything! )
And tomorrow will be a tough day for Jedi because my husband and i are on day shifts. So he'll be crated from 8-12 and then 1-4.

Re: remind me why you should crate train? VENT
Do you close the crate? What if you try closing off an area of the room with baby gates and leaving the crate door open? That's how I trained my dog and he knows that once the gates go up to go inside his crate to sleep. I closed the crate door on him the first night we got him and he cried all night. I felt horrible!

Re: remind me why you should crate train? VENT
We had the same problem with Bella she would be crated all day, from 8-4 and then at night from 11-6, she would do ok during the day, but at night it was awful!!! We let her cry for 2-3 weeks, we slept next to the crate, put shirts in the crate, used a ticking clock, put the crate right next to our bed, etc. and nothing worked at night. So one night we both got so fed up we just put her in the bed with us, and what would you know, she slept through the night!!! So she has been sleeping with us ever since! My DH and I talked about it, and decided it wasn't fair, because she was in her crate all day, out for a few hours and back in at night, and all along, the only thing the poor dog wanted was to be with us.

awww! I realize that for some... crate training is the only way to go. But like Chelle says... you have to do what's right for you and your dog.

Re: remind me why you should crate train? VENT
Well ladies and gentlemen... i think we won the lottery! Or at least it feels like it! As most of you know, crate training has been rough for Jedi and us. Well to make a long story short, last night we put a blanket over his crate and we bought this Comfort Zone plug (it looks like an air freshner but it sends off pheromones or something to ease the dog). Now i don't know which one did it or if it was both, but i could care less. Whatever it was... IT WORKED!!! Jedi cried for a minute and a half and that was it. I kept laying in bed thinking... okay when is he going to let loose? And neither my husband or i said anything to one another in fear of jinxing ourselves! But Jedi slept from 10:30pm until 3:30am when he had to go to the bathroom. Let me just say that he's never slept 5 hours before!!!! He did cry a little when put back in his crate after going outside, but it was fine. Then Steve was up at 6 for work and i walked him then. Now i can only hope that this will continue!!!! Cross your fingers for us!

Yes we started that yesterday for a bit while we were home. I crated him while getting ready for work and then we crated him when we were cooking/having dinner (which he did fairly well at). So we're trying and starting to get the hang of.
I think i'm just too sensitive! I always thought... why crate him if we're home. That's silly! Who knew that wasn't necessarily a good thing in a way!

YAY!!!!
I'm so glad it worked! You just needed to tire him out, so I guess you'll have to bring him over to play everyday
