*UPDATE* SEVERE PAIN in lower left side. 2 trips to ER- PLEASE HELP!!
On Friday, I started having a really bad cramp/pulling on my left side by my groin area. I went to see the NP at my OB's office. She felt it was round ligament pain & recommended Tylenol. By 4 AM on Saturday, DH had to take me to the ER at St.Catherine's. The pain was so extreme that I was literally on the floor rolling around to find relief. Luckily my OB was there at the ER. They checked me for everything- kidney stones/cysts/ovary problems/fibroids/bladder infection...NOTHING! Everything was negative. They wanted to give me Morphine for the pain, but I declined because I didn't know enough about it. The only thing that helped was 600 mg of Ibuprofen, which I resited taking for a long time because I thought you weren't supposed to take it during pregnancy. I'm 19 weeks right now. They hooked me up to the fetal monitor in L&D. No contractions, thank God. Baby's fine, no issues at all!!! They sent me home because I was declining all narcotics and they didn't know what else to do because I couldn't get an xray or anything. The pain persisted constantly with no relief until I took the 600 mg of Motrin again. Only got 2 hrs of relief.
I went the next morning to a gastroenterologist to see if maybe it was something with my intestines, but I have had no problems with my BM, sorry TMI. He sent me back upstairs to my OB. Did a pelvic exam, checked uterus, everything's fine. Baby's still fine. Thankfully!! By Tuesday, I couldn't deal anymore. I hadn't slept since Friday & the pain was so severe now that I had chills & nausea. No fever though. Ended up going to ER at Northshore LIJ in Manhasset (didn't want to go back to St.Cath's because of a few reasons. One reason is that the nurse was actually TEXTING on his phone as he was taking my blood!) LIJ did all the same tests, all negative. But this time, I accepted the Morphine, then 2 hrs later still writhing in pain they gave me Indicin. Then 2 hrs later they gave me Percocet. I was desperate. My entire body was shaking from the pain, and even as I type this, I'm shaking uncontrollably.
Went to see my OB yesterday morning, just 4 hours after getting out of the ER, and was given a prescription for Percocet, despite my reluctance to wanting it. I took it. Made me drowsy & nauseaus, but didn't take the pain away. So far, the only relief I get is with 600 mg of Ibuprofen and I really do NOT want to take it. But I really have NO choice here. Someone, anyone, can you please please please help me!? Someone please tell me it's ok to take the Motrin without harming my baby. I can't handle the pain anymore. I'm at the end of my rope. Thank you if you got this far.
**Update** Full update at bottom, but it turns out I did have SPD (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction). I'm not out of the woods yet, but I'm sooo much better than last week. Thank you for the FMs & advice.

Re: SEVERE PAIN in lower left side. 2 trips to ER- PLEASE HELP!!
I am so sorry. I hope you feel better soon. Seeig that the motrin (an anti inflammatory) gives you relief better than the pain medication something must be inflammed.. thats all I can really think of. If it gives you relief, then take it.. you cant sit in pain forever. I had soemthing similiar happen to me a few months ago. I was in severe pain and got no answers despite amillion tests and 2 trips to the ER.. turns out after an MRI they found that I tore something in my hip.. at that point the only thing that helped me with the pain was also anti-inflammatories. They gave me vicodin but it did nothing!
Really hope you get some relief soon

Look at it this way. These people are professionals. They will not give you something that you should NOT take while pregnant. So, take the motrin and relax yourself, it will be best for you and the baby. MrsRivera, took Vicodin whille pregnant. Not ideal, but with her back it was needed. The baby will be fine. You stressing and being uncomfortable is not good for either of you.

Re: SEVERE PAIN in lower left side. 2 trips to ER- PLEASE HELP!!
I really sympathize with you - I have had kidney stones and the pain you are describing sounds so similar- even though I know they ruled that out. But I know what it is to be in horrendous pain.
All I can say is- if you OB is telling you to take the motrin- or the harder stuff- then it can't be THAT bad for the baby. They would never let you take something that might do harm. THe pain you are in is raising your BP and heartrate and that is WORSE for the baby...
I hope they figure out what is wrong...I'm so sorry!

I had an ovarian cyst rupture last year. Same kind of pain, but the pain subsided after about 5-10 minutes with the cyst. This is going on continuous pain now for a week.

I know, I finally just caved in and took the Percocet. The thing is, it doesn't take the pain away. It only makes me groggy & nauseaus.

Re: SEVERE PAIN in lower left side. 2 trips to ER- PLEASE HELP!!
I just FMed you.
A note about physicians, they aren't always right. I was misdiagnosed me with a UTI, was given painkillers, anti-inflamatories, anti-biotics, the works. 3/4 OBs I went to never heard of my condition. 1 kind of sort of new about it. There are some conditions, like the one I had, they aren't taught this in medical school! Its not brought up because its a temporary condition that never harms the baby and almost always goes away after birth. Painkillers don't work for it and they have no drugs to prescribe for it, so whats the point of them even knowing about it. It made my life miserable and it started for me when I was only 12 weeks prego.
The thing that really made me mad, all I needed was a professional that understood what bones and muscles where being affected, some appropriate exercises, a hip realignment and some thigh massage. I have told my story on this forum over and over again. After a few visits with my physical therapist, I have not felt any pain during my pregnancy - well until labor.
I had symphysis pubis dysfunction. If that's what it is, its simple and easy and totally treatable, it can start at 12 weeks, it can be a mild annoyance or completely paralyzing, I had the later, and I was pretty happy after I got treated

There might be a prenatal nurse that has heard of it and give some advice, but for the most part they don't recognize this type of thing as something they can treat.

I would go to your primary care physician or get a second opinion from a different OB.

ugh, so sorry!
I hope they find out what is causing this pain.
Is it gas? like are you backed up? That pain can be so severe, it can make you cry.
I had an episode of that and I was in so much pain, I almost had DH take me to hospital. I was SO backed up....lets just say when it came time to go, it was EXCRUCIATING!
Whatever it is, I hope they figure it out and you feel btr!

Re:**UPDATE** SEVERE PAIN in lower left side. 2 trips to ER- PLEASE HELP!!
So, after 13 days I finally am able to sit upright at the computer. I can not believe the medical community & their insensitive approach to people in excruciating pain. Turns out I have Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction. Not a SINGLE doctor could tell me what was causing the pain. I had to see a spine specialist & an orthopedic doctor. They ordered MRIs of my pelvis & LSpine. The MD's were baffled as to how the Percocet could not be taking my pain away. So, not only was I in agony, but the Percocet made me vomit. My DH had to literally carry me out of the bathroom & put me on the floor in our hallway.
DH took me to the city to Renew-PT (thank you for the recommendation Shanna!!!!!!) I worked with 2 Physical Therapists, Luz & Rachel. I was given a few exercises to do at home, & they even showed DH how to help me. We've been doing them religiously!
Let me just say this.....If you are in severe pain, do NOT just let them tell you it's normal. It may not be HARMFUL to your baby, but it is certainly not NORMAL. With the help of some of you ladies, I can actually walk now. I'm not out of the woods yet, but I'm no where near where I was last week. And thank you also to the people who FMd me. I finally can say that I think I'm headed in the right direction. That pain was no joke! I've never had my body convulse from pain before. Thank you for letting me vent! You girls are so awesome!!!

You are so welcome! Pain is completely not normal in Pregnancy and there is treatment for a wide variety of muscular/orthopedic and neural pain, that most OBs have no idea about.
Pregnancy affects you so systematically, its a shame OBs don't bother with treating the patient as whole and not just the womb. Many of the pain related conditions that do not harm the baby are ignored, and there are simple and easy treatments for them, if you know how to find help.
I kept changing OBs because I thought I was just having bad luck with idiots, even the best one said she didn't know what it is, but she thinks Yoga might help.
