UPDATE: Speak up or let it go?

Something is bothering me ever so slightly..

I babysit once a week for a family of 2 kids. It is understood that this is a part time job and if she cancels on me a particular week I still get paid which is great (never happened but nice to know..).

However...the dad is the one who returns home first. My hours are 2pm-5pm...3 measly hours but the extra cash helps out.

Lately he has been walking in the door at 4:50pm. He write me a check for $5 less than expected. YES he docks my pay for being home a tad bit early. And honestly, by the time he writes the check and asks how the kids were, its 5pm.

Shouldn't he just pay me the full amount? I know its FIVE DOLLARS and I am so not a petty person. I haven't said a word...but three times this has happened...its so WEIRD!!

Do i speak up? Or stay silent? I love the kids, love the mom...dad is a bit odd but whatever...

UPDATE: The dad came home at 3:30 instead of 5pm. He said he got off early without knowing it and was going to make me a deal...pay me for 2 hours of work instead of the hour and a half I did...

I walked out with $30...feeling a bit weirded out. It was like he was being generous, yet I didn't make the full amount I am expected to make.

I am talking to the mom today..wish me luck!

Re: Speak up or let it go?

I don't know what he thinks!!! He started out paying me $45 per every babysitting session (15/hour). Now the check is for $40. He runs in the house, runs upstairs for his checkbook and writes it out while looking at the clock. Can we say CHEAP??

The mom is prob not aware....the times she has written out checks to me it is always for $45 even if she got home at say 4:30 (but that usually never happens).

And one time he walked in the door at 5:20 and wrote me a check for $50. So odd.

I would say something to the Mom, if that is who you made the original arrangements with and feel most comfortable with. With our sitter, we always round up to the nearest 1/2 hr so he should NOT be docking you, IMHO. Chat Icon

Yeah...I keep thinking of doing this....but I just HATE awkward situations. I would hate him coming home and knowing the situation and being very stiff or something. Not like he is mister friendly now, lol.

We'll see what happens today!!! Will it be $40 or $45????? Lol!

I would somehow try to say something lightly to the wife. If you want to get technical and do the math per minute, he's ripping you off $2.50!!!!

Re: Speak up or let it go?

I would play a little dumb with the wife ... maybe say something like "I don;t know why, but 'guy' keeps writing checks for $x instead of $y. Do you know why he's doing that? I felt awkward asking him when he did it." Let her hammer an answer and let her handle it.

Re: Speak up or let it go?

Are you sure he knows how much you get paid? I know how some men are (especially my DH), who sometimes don't listen or get things mixed up.

Re: Speak up or let it go?

I am going to give you my honest opinion because Ive also been on the receiving end. I was a nanny for 5 + yrs and while at times I was shorted 100 dollars other times I was overpaid nicely. For me it balanced out well anyhow. I loved the family and they loved me. To argue over 5 dollars or for me it was 100 at times...just wasnt worth it. I knew I had a job that wasnt very trying and I had a nice relationship with the family. I feel that once you complain...that relationship is over. Bad feelings will start to arise and instead of having an enjoyable job it will be awful. IMO...if you are looking for a different family (or the potential) then I would say something otherwise....I seriously would leave it alone. JMHOChat Icon

But you can look at it from the other side too - if it's only $5, why not just pay it. If I had reliable child care with a person I liked and trusted, I wouldn't be nickel and diming the person this way.

This guy might just be very anal and it makes perfect sense to him to pay you this way - especially since he paid extra when he was late.

I think you should just get your set amount each and every time. You are blocking out your time until 5. They are paying for that.

I was thinking same thing.. how do you get $5 for 10 mins. There are 60 mins in an hour, then if 10 mins= $5.. then you should be making $30 an hour. are you making that much? If you arent then i would say something b/c hes actually jipping you money.

No, I get $15/hour. He just decided to dock $5 because well, I guess he thought that was appropriate. Very irritating!
