*UPDATE* Super high fever with no other symptoms - any ventures at a diganosis?
DS started with a very high fever (his first ) yesterday late afternoon - 102.8 at daycare. We took him home, gave him motrin and it was gone in an hour. By this morning, up to 102.9. Gave him motrin, gone. At 12:30 up to 103
DH is taking him to the dr at 2, I was just curious if anyone else's DC has had something like this. He's lethargic when he has the fever but back to his happy self when it's gone. He's eating normally, wants his bottles, giving wet diapers, no crazy BMs, no throwing up, no pulling on his ear...
I feel so badly and am actually pretty scared with such a high fever and nothing else to go on.
These are the days I despise being a working mom
UPDATE: DH took Colin over early and got in early. His tonsils are very red and ***** but it's not tonsillitis (DH is the worst at remembering details so I don't know for sure why it's definitely not tonsillitis). They also did a throat culture and it's not strep, thankfully. So, it's just a bad virus. Basically we're doing what we're supposed to and it'll just go away eventually.
Thank you all for your replies! It was good not to be 'alone' in this

Re: Super high fever with no other symptoms - any ventures at a diganosis?
I hear ya
My first thought was maybe an ear infection. DS never pulls at his ears when he has one and will still eat perfectly fine. But will get a fever and lethargic and be better after some Tylenol brings fever down and helps with the pain. He happens to have one now and had 102 fever Tuesday night with it. So, ear infection has my guess.
Was he congested at all before the fever? Fluid draining from congestion is what always leads to our ear infections-even though my DS hasn't been congested the last few days, the damage was already done.

May be RSV virus. DS had that last month. His only symptom was the high fever. It's a virus that can cause bronchiolitis and pneumonia (not trying to scare you).
I was also thinking maybe cocksackie but when DS had that, he was refusing bottles because of the sores in his throat. It started with a very high fever and no other symptoms as well.
I hope your DC feels better soon.

Thank you both
My mom mentioned that my cousin used to have ear infections with no symptoms but the high fever all the time.
If it's the RSV I'm going to be seriously upset. My ped is the only one I know that didn't give the drink for that and now that DS is past 6 mos I *believe* he is too old for it. It is scary since one of the guys I work with has had bad bronchitis for almost a month - I hope I didn't bring it home to him

This happened to DD a few weeks ago. She threw up that night and by the morning her temp was down and she was fine. She did develop a rash which lasted 24 hours but that went away, and it wasn't itchy or anything. Ped said it was a summer virus. I hope he feels better soon!

Gavin used to spike fevers like that every month or so for a few months.
No matter what it was, the trick to getting it to stay down was consistency with the Tylenol and Motrin.
We would alternate them every 3 hours.....for the night and better part of a day. We found just one dose here and there wasn't working.
Once it was really high and I had to give him a tepid bath. (not cold, that makes it worse because the body overcompensates and makes the fever even higher)
Good luck!!!!
P.S. I never got an official diagnosis on what it was/could be, just the body fighting something or other. The fever was too high to be teething....

This happened to my DS last month. 2 days of SUPER high fevers. Ped said to just alternate Motrin and Tylenol. After 3 days he was 100% better. Our only suscpicion was coxsackie...he had NO OTHER symptoms though.

Roseola Infantum.....
After the fever breaks he will develope a rash that should last between 24 and 48 hours or so.
Some kids never develope the rash but most times babies will.
As long as he is handling the fevers well and they are responding to the Motrin/Tylenol there is no cause for concern. Keep him on the Motrin every 6 hours or the Tylenol every 4 to keep the fever from spiking.
Once he gets the rash you're in the home stretch...

MY 3 got the same high unexplained fever a month ago. One after the other. There was no explaination for it at all. High 103.5 temp for a few days then a cold. Ped said it is just a virus that young kids get.

Im going to say viral. Actually its not that high, but I would bring him to the doctor, BUT if it goes to 104 or higher definately call your doctor immediately. My boys always got very high fevers 104-105 and they were just viral.
