Update/Vent about my dd weight issue
Quick Background: Back in April at my DD 2 1/2 year old checkup we were told thast she gained too much wieght since her 2 yera old check up and that we had to have her grow in to her weight. We were told to eliminate certain foods and also use portion control. In addition to someother foods I specificallyasked about these ice pops that during the summer the kids can eat 5-6 a ay whenwe are at the beach. We have a cabana nd everyone knows each other so if one kid is having a snack the parent ususally offers it to everyone. i asked tehdr about teh ice pops and she said ONE is enough. They are ful of sugar and to make our own instead of using teh premade ones.
So fast forward to this weekend... We got o teh ebach for teh first time. I told a few people about the drs appt and said please limit her to one ice pop a day and also was talkign about the differnt things teh dr said to elimintae and cut back on. So my Dh and his aunt who are BTH overweight said i am being crazy. They said she is not oeverweight and once she has a growth spurt she will slimout. Then his aunts asking why the ice pops are bad they are only 35 calories and her Dr told her to eat them as snacks when she was tryignto lose weight bc they are low in calorie, give you that sweet taste and also last a long time so its a good snack. i said wll thsat fine but why does she need FIVE of them why isnt one enough.
His aunt thinks by me limiting her stuff she can develop an eating disorder. I said but thast why I am doing it now and doing it gradually. I said if i know she tends to be heavy why not help her not develop a weight prioblem if I can?
I feel like I am the only one who is on board about this. Again I dont look at DD and say wow that is one OVERWEIGHT kid. But I definitely think she has teh tendency.
I dont knwo what I am looking for I guess I just needed to vent.

Re: Update/Vent about my dd weight issue
I'm sorry that you're meeting such opposition when you're trying to do something that is so good for your DD. You are certainly NOT leading her to have an eating disorder. You are teaching her good eating habits and if she has weight problems in her genes (you said DH has a weight problem, right?) then it is extra important that she learns now how to control her portions and eating healthy foods. it sounds like you're not going overboard, just being a great mom. I hope you get the support you & your DD deserve.

Re: Update/Vent about my dd weight issue
my DD is underweight and I still limit her snacks and whatnot....its just not healthy to let a child eat huge amounts of sugary junk foods anyway..
I am sorry you are going through this...just do what you feel is right for DD

Re: Update/Vent about my dd weight issue
I'm sorry, this is a tough situation. As someone who struggled with my weight for as far back as I can remember, it's important for parents to be proactive, I think. I have wonderful parents and when I spoke to my mom about this recently, she said she didn't want to hurt my feelings so she just tried to keep me more active. I was a cheerleader for 10 years but still always carried extra weight. Kids need to be taught from early on that not everyone can eat the same things as everyone else. But, at the same time, it's a sensitive topic and if approached wrong, can cause eating issues later on. My brother chose to harrass me and make my life hell for years until I literally just stopped eating and lost weight... obv not healthy. I hope everything works out and you and DH come to an agreement, whatever that may be, that works for you.
Side note... your DD is adorable and if I saw her on the street, I definately would not think ' Wow that kid has a weight problem'. Everyone is so consumed with being thin, myself incuded, but when it comes to kids, I don't believe 'thin is in'.

Re: Update/Vent about my dd weight issue
I dont think you need to limit her foods but maybe make better food choices for her. Instead of her going right for cookies or soemthing sweet, try to get her to eat more fruit.
My DS doesnt have a weight issue and I limit his intake of sugary foods and junk food. I dont want him growing up with bad eating habits. Nothing wrong with limiting your daughter to 1 ice pop.

Re: Update/Vent about my dd weight issue
See thast the whole thing its not what she eats its how much. She always wants MORE!! She loves fruit, chicken, steak, portobello mushrooms( only veggie she eats) and I do limit bad food. That why i am so catious bc its obvioulsty a gene thing. She doesnt need to eat a lot to gain weight just like my dh.So to me ifyou know thast NOW is teh time to change it not later.
