UPDATE: What learning tablet for 3 & 6 year old?
Update: since the "kid toy" leapPad Ultra & such is not well received & many seem to suggest an "adult" tablet....
Which do you recommend & what protection case?

Re: What learning tablet for 3 & 6 year old?
I bought leap pads for both of them last Christmas and they were a waste. I would get the small iPad. It's worth the money because you can get a lot of free/ cheap apps.

I agree. I would just get a small, "regular" tablet. There are a ton of Android tablets for under $100. There are lots of free apps and games. Educational apps (reading, math, science, etc) for every age level, and games for any age, skill and type of game.

Really?! I'm concerned about them breaking it & downloading things unknowingly.
We have an iPad now, so we want them off ours
I really want them to get something with technology to enhance their learning & make it more fun.

My 3 1/2 yr olds have the leap pad2 and are bored with it. They are getting the Nabi for Christmas. It's pretty much a regular tablet but with parental controls. It has that big red plastic around the edges to keep it safe

I also agree about the ipad. We tried the leappad, and it was also not really used. We got a really good kid case for the ipad mini on amazon, and has worked well. It's worth it.

We have the leadpad ultra and it's a piece of crap. It takes forever to load and it is constantly needing to be rebooted. I just want to throw it in the trash.
We also have the Ipad mini and IMO is the best thing to get. You can get educational apps on them and actually my daughter only has educational apps and some drawing apps and music on hers. You can limited and block what can be downloaded and searched for.

UPDATE: What learning tablet for 3 & 6 year old?
There are many other tablets out there that aren't Ipads, that have tons of education apps through the Google Play Store. They are much less expensive than an Ipad. I wouldn't buy my kids an Ipad to be honest. Too expensive when there are many other options out there.

Do they sell games for it or you can only download them?

Re: UPDATE: What learning tablet for 3 & 6 year old?
Go with the Kindle fire. First the price is good, and my 2yo had literally thrown ours on to concrete and it barely has a scratch on it. (There have been so many times he has dropped or thrown it where I am thinking, okay thats it, and it always is fine, and we only have a small think case, not a bumper or otterbox) I have a password set so they can't download anything even unknowingly without it. you can also shut off the wifi so that would also eliminate the issue.
There are tons of free apps and I have found a bunch of learning ones the boys love (2.5yo and 6yo) We also have movies on it. And if you are an amazon prime member there are perks too!

Id go with the fire, it works really well for my kids. They will grow into too, where as the kids tablets they will grow out of, KWIM? The new kindles have kid timers on it so it lets them know when its time to get off, which is cool. You can read books (downloaded from Amazon) so the selection for them is endless, you have access to all android games/apps, the internet works great on it, even if it is only wi-fi. It really has everything you need and you can beat $79.

Re: UPDATE: What learning tablet for 3 & 6 year old?
Is the $79 for the plain kindle fire or for the kindle fire HD? I assume it is for the 8GB not the 16?
Is the 8 enough? Was thinking we need the 16?
Anyone have a link where it shows it is $79?

It looks like maybe it is the old kindle fire not the fire HD. Do they have they timers too?

I have a 32GB tablet and an 8Gb tablet. Bought the 32GB first because I figure'd I'd need the extra room. I download every app imaginable, for myself, DS, DD and DW. Whatever app they think is interesting, we download. I think I've used about 2GB... that's why I just got the 8GB drive for the 2nd tablet. If you're downloading and storing movies, shows, videos, lots of music, etc, then you'll need more space. If you're mainly using it for apps, 8GB is plenty.

Another vote for the Kindle Fire. Lots of Android games and apps available, books from Amazon. It has parental controls to prevent downloading and block web access if you want. I find it to be sturdy and reliable, and you can't beat the price. I have the old pre-HD one.

Re: UPDATE: What learning tablet for 3 & 6 year old?
I have an 8GB Kindle Fire that I got on sale for $80 a while back and for the price i think it's perfect. DD plays with it all the time and loves it. There are tons of apps to download, if you have prime you can stream a lot of videos, you can set time limits, etc.
And it's very sturdy too!! She has thrown it a few times already and it's fine, and we don't have a case yet.

Definitely study, my DC dropped it face down on a tile floor yesterday, totally fine.

Re: UPDATE: What learning tablet for 3 & 6 year old?
We just got our girls the Samsung 3 tablet. It was only $50 but with a internet plan. Now I'm thinking about returning and just getting the Kindle... I thought I was done with this.

I was told the kindle has a limited amount of games available compared to the Samsung. But it seems that a lot of people on here are very happy with their kindles, so who knows.

Kindle has access to the android market. So far there hasn't been a game/app we wanted that we haven't been able to get.
