UPDATE with Actual Birth Weight...Had Growth Sono today at 38 weeks UPDATE - looks like I'm going to be a February mommy
Baby is measuring 8 lbs 9 oz and set to grow a half pound per week.
DS #1 was born at 8 lbs so I'm hoping their 20% error rate is in my favor.
Otherwise I'm relying on the fact that I've already vaginally delivered one baby before in hopes that delivering this one is easier as DS#1 may have already paved the way so to speak. I'm going to keep telling myself that although I do think there is some truth to it.
UPDATE - had my appointment today and after running their calculations they want me to have a c-sectionat 39 weeks. They had this graph of risk data for permanent shoulder injury to the baby at we're at about an 80% right now which kind of scared me. So looks like baby will be delivered on Tuesday 2/22/11 which is a pretty cool birthday at least. I'm nervous for a c-section. I had a relatively simple vaginal birth with DS#1 so in a way I'm kind of dissapointed that it won't be that way again but I think I just really want baby to be ok and not put him at risk. So we'll see very soon how big this baby really is.
Update 2/23/11 -
My big boy is here and so gorgeous!
We had the scheduled c-section yesterday.
Birth weight was 9 lbs 4 oz. and he was 21.5 inches. So looks like they were pretty darn close. When he came out they were all very relieved I elected the c-section. Overall it was a very different experience that with my first but I'm feeling pretty good now considering.
Good luck to all of you...I probably have some catching up to do to see if anyone went into labor in the last 48 hours.
But off to do some snuggling with my little teddy bear.

They are always off.
Two days before I had Jack the tech said he was 8lbs 5 ounces, and that she is NEVER wrong.
He was delivered at 9lbs 14ounces.
Yea, ok lady! Never say never!

Re: Had Growth Sono today at 38 weeks
they might be off. My friend was actually told at the end of her pregnancy that baby was near 10 lbs and it would be a long & difficult delivery. Well, not only was it the quickest delivery ever (she claims baby quite literally just popped right out after only a few minutes of pushing) but her son was only 5-6 pounds!!! I still don't know how Drs could be THAT off, but ever since hearing her story I try not to rely TOO much on educated GUESSES. lol.

I had a sono the day before my son was born...and they estimated 6lbs 6oz. He was 7lbs 4oz.

Re: Had Growth Sono today at 38 weeks
Aww, our kids are the same size...lol!! I went yesterday for a growth sono, 38 weeks 2 days and my DS was measuring 8 lbs 9 oz too. Funny thing though, I had a growth sono on Monday too at my GD doc and he only measured 8lbs 2 oz.......My son gained 7 ounces over night.
DD was supposed to be over 9 lbs according to the sonos and thats why they induced me, yet she was a little 7lb 8 oz peanut.
I think they have never truly been too accurate for me!!

Cool, we'll have to compare how big they really are when they are born!
They were surprised that I didn't have GD...they asked me at least 3 times between the sono tech and the doctor.
ETA: i am 38 wks 2 days today so we're exactly on the same track.

I got the same question a million times when I was pregnant with DS. He came out 9lbs 3oz.

So exciting!!! Thats a great bday! Do they normally do a growth sonogram at that time?
I am right behind you, due 3/1 and am dying to know how big the baby is because I am a very tiny person.

Just out of curiosity, why won't they try an induction first?

oh well I agree that people are wrong a lot with sonos but also maybe you will go into labor on your own before then! It seems pretty likely that you could go early with your second!

If I opt for induction they won't do it until 41 weeks when the risk it really really high that he will sustain an injury (almost in the 100% range). Their thinking is that if I'm going to try to do it vaginally I am better off having it start naturally so that everything progresses on its own rather than being forced like an induction would do.
In the end it is my option though.
I do have a risk of preclamsia right now too which we'll know for sure on Sunday when the urine collection and bloodwork is done. At that point I also have the option of induction but the doctor still thinks that it puts me at even greater risk of injury since the induction are usually tough to begin and I'm not dilated or effaced at all right now so it could likely lead to a c-section anyway. As I said above, if I go for a vaginal they would rather not have to induce me at all and let nature take its course since they know that I already had a successful vaginal delivery with no intervention necessary. But the risk of injury is very high if I do it vaginally.
I know, I'm kind of in a little bit of disbelief we are going the c-section route. But when she laid the odds out on paper for me and started talking about permanent nerve damage to his shoulders I really started to get nervous that something bad can happen. And whether or not this is just a case of the doctor pushing for a c-section because it is easier for them, believe me that thought is in my head too. But I'm still nervous for the baby and that keep overshadowing my trepidation.

I didn't have one with DS#1. I think they did it for DS#2 because he has been measuring big all along.
Good luck

Totally understandable.
I was in labor with DS for over a day. I went into labor on my own (had pregnancy induced high BP) and borderline pre eclempsia. Anyway, they started the pitocin to try speed up the process.
After pushing for 2.5 hours the OB said the baby was at risk for the shoulders getting stuck. Possibly breaking his collar bone, nerve damage, or even worse getting stuck in the birth canal and possibly resulting in death.
So I immediately signed the paperwork for the c-section. He was 9lbs 3oz. My labor nurse said they should have given me a couple more chances to push and I would have had him out. But honestly that is speculation and I am happy with the decision we made. He was born healthy and happy with no complications. No regrets here.

And those are exactly the risks they outlined to me too. She basically said to me that I'm putting myself more at risk by electing a c-section but basically eliminating any risk to the baby. So my choice is to protect the baby knowing full well all the "coulda shoulda wouldas". I don't think I'll have any regrets in the end. Just a healthy baby.

yes, please update with his actual weight. I'm so curious how accurate they really are.
Anyhow - congrats on being a February mom!! Don't worry about the c-section. I know any kind of surgery can be scary, but I've heard only good things about c-sections. You'll be fine And that's super exciting that you'll get to meet your LO a week early!!!!!
