Update with Picture..Anyone have a tattoo on the top of the their foot? Some questions....
I'm getting my first tattoo tomorrow for my 10th anniversary. I'm getting 5 flowers of each of my family's birth month on the top of my foot wrapping up on part of the ankle. Everyone's told me that it is going to hurt a lot. I'm not worried about that, but the aftercare. I've been told it takes a lot longer to heal and that the color doesn't stay well. Also, what's the best ointment to use on it? Any experiences? Thanks!

Re: Anyone have a tattoo on the top of the their foot? Some questions....
I have two little stars (just outlines) on the top of my foot under my 2nd to last toe. I've had it for 5 years and it definitely doesn't look as crisp and clean as it did when I first got it. The guy acutally warned me before he did the tattoo that foot tattoos start to fade and look different very fast... he was right.

I have a butterfly on the top of my foot and it wasn't bad at all! Don't do the toes though- extremely painful and it fades so quickly!!!

Best advice I ever got when I got my tattoo.... follow the persons advice who is doing the tattoo. They are the expert. That's why you are going to them.

Update...Pic added Re: Anyone have a tattoo on the top of the their foot? Some questions....
Well here is a pic of my first tattoo. 5 flowers of each of our birth months (one for each of my dc's , my dh and myself)....I'm still getting used to how big it is. I envisioned it smaller, but the guy who did it said it would look like mush and I would loose the detail.... Image Attachment(s):

i actually don't agree with this (surprise) i've been to 4 different tattoo artists and 1 had a different opinion than the others. i've talked to other people that have gone to other artists and the advice they give is crap. what did they tell you to do to heal the tattoo??

Your tattoo is gorgeous. I love the colors. Hope the pain wasn't too bad for you!

They had me cover it during the day with saran wrap for I think it was five days since I'm an electrician and in a VERY dirty environment. I uncovered it as soon as possible after work hours letting it breathe the rest of the day.

i would definitely wait until the last minute to put the seran wrap on it. it'll never heal that way. also you're only supposed to use a & d for a day in a half. after that, use non fragrance lubriderm. if you use a & d any longer than that, the ink will come out.

And use the TINIEST bit of A&D too. Almost none.
They also had me wash it with non-fragrant Dial soap. I just held the bar of soap above the spot and let the water wash the soap onto it. This way I wasn't rubbing it at all. The water beating on it helped once the itchies started.

Re: Update with Picture..Anyone have a tattoo on the top of the their foot? Some questions....
also wanted to add that if you swell alot, as much as it hurts, you should take a hot bath. it'll help with the swelling ALOT. i'm a baby, it hurts more when i'm cleaning it then when i'm getting it done. an easy way of putting a & d on is by putting the closed tube under hot water and it kinda "melts" and it slides on easier. and you're absolutely correct, use as little a & d as possible.
and never EVER use bacitracin

it looks awesome!
dont forget it needs to breathe.
and the hotter the water in the shower, the better. it has to do with your white blood cells. its helps so that you dont scab.
less is more

Re: Update with Picture..Anyone have a tattoo on the top of the their foot? Some questions....
Thanks everyone for the compliments. I was a little shocked at the size, but I'm starting to get used to it. My daughters love it and keep asking to see "their flower"....
They actually told me to use Aquaphor (my dh got one as well that night, so we've both been using it). Then after that to use non fragrance Lubiderm. So far a lot of the swelling has gone down, a bit bruised, but not too bad.
It did hurt more on the foot part then on my leg, but once I got used to the pain it was okay.

Re: Update with Picture..Anyone have a tattoo on the top of the their foot? Some questions....
It looks gorgeous! Can you post a closer picture of the flowers? I'd love to see the detail.
One thing I've learned from listening to people with tattoos, my tattoo artist, and information I've found on the internet is that everyone tells you something different.
It can be confusing! Some people say to leave it covered for 2 hours and never cover it again. Some say longer. Some say use Aquaphor/A&D/ointment for 2 days only, 3 days, etc. Then there's hydrating - never, ever take a bath or sit in a hot tub with a new tattoo. But look at this thread - more than one person said use hot water!
Everyone's gonna swear by what they did. But my skin is different from your skin is different from the next person's skin. So I can't imagine that one set of rules will work the same for everyone. Because if I'm dehydrated already with dry skin, that will be different from someone who is well hydrated with supple skin. As will my age, since my skin turgor will absolutely not be the same as someone 10-15 years younger than me.
I also keep in mind that a tattoo is technically a wound with a foreign object in it. To keep it in perspective and not just consider that I'm obsessively caring for it because of my investment, but also because it's a haven for infection.
I hope you find a good regimen that works for you! And if you can, I'd love to see more photos.

it looks awesome! I don't think it's too big at all, and I always like to trust them if they say it'll get blurry if it's too small.

Re: Update with Picture..Anyone have a tattoo on the top of the their foot? Some questions....
The tat is beautiful. I have been told aquaphor or clear A & D without Zinc, then fragrance free lubriderm for follow up. Some artists tell you to cover it overnight and then let the shower "wash" the bandage off, but others swear that it is better to take it off after a hour or so. I say if you trust your artist and they are experienced, let them guide you.
From my experience, when I got a tattoo done by an artist with a heavy hand, I had to leave the bandage on overnight.
