UPDATE#2 back from sono- need more advice, pls what to do? need advice
hi girls, i am 16w 4 days today. i had my u/s on Friday, all was good. This past night i started feeling uncomfortable, a lot of pressure in the low area. Could not sleep much. It has not gotten better today. It is not a sharp pain, just pressure down there PLus i have not felt any flutters today, and usually i feel them a few times during the day. i called dr, but he left already, i can call his cell, but i feel stupid. on the other hand, i am scared and want to know baby is ok.
what to do? call dr on his cell? go to ER? just relax?? i have no suspicious discharge, if that matters.
------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE: talked to dr in the morning, i wish i did not he said it might be my fibroma pushing on the uterus, but also said that my cervix might be getting shorter he also added that there is not much can be done to stop labor at 17 weeks I am so scared about this cervix comment. should i have insisted on coming in and checking it? my next apt to him is in 3 weeks. i am lost
-------------------------------------------- update # 2. back from u/s. thank god cervix is closed and is at 3.3cm, which they say is good. Baby is moving all around, i am so glad i got to see him. Fibroid is big, but not pushing on uterus as of now. They do not know where the pain is coming from, must be fibroid growing. Plan for now is tylenol every 6 h. I am relieved about cervix. Thank you for support

Re: what to do? need advice
honestly, if it's just pressure you are fine... and get used to it. it's totally a normal symptom. If you have no cramping or bleeding you should be good.
even sharp pains - I've had them and pressure throughout my pregnancy and my dr always says that's normal. So try not to worry, but call him again tomorrow if you still feel it.

Re: what to do? need advice
thank you. what bugs me is that people say: "oh you are only 16 w, you should not have any discomfort, it is so early". Well, I do feel discomfort. plus i am super paranoid ( this is what happens when you go thru IF and mc )

Re: what to do? need advice
not true - I got sharp shooting pains (round ligament pains most likely) early on. It's different for everyone and everyone will have an opinion so tell them to STFU. Plus it's totally normal for you to be paranoid. I think for peace of mind I would just call your doctor in the morning or leave a message; if it gets really bad for any reason tonight then you can go to the ER. Maybe put your feet up in the meantime.

I am a little over 18 weeks and have had sharp pains as well as felt pressure. I would try to just stay hydrated and put your feet up. That has seemed to help me when I have felt those things

Call for an appointment...if your cervix is shortening, they could do a cerclage like other ladies have had....

Re: UPDATE- need more advice, pls what to do? need advice
I don't know anything about fibromas, but my cervix is short. There are things that can be done for a short cervix.
Progesterone, a cerclage (stitches), bed rest.
There are also things that can be done to keep you from contracting.
I'd try to see if you can get an appointment.

I would try and take it easy. Feet up, plenty of water. If you aren't feeling better by tomorrow, I would make an appt.

do NOT feel dumb or scared! You want to make sure everything is okay - it's totally normal. You're not calling him asking if you can eat feta cheese - this is serious!

Yes, ask him if you can have your cervix measured. No, there is nothing they can do about labor, but you could go on bed rest.

This is total BS! If it is your cervix then he most certainly can try and stop it. Call back, demand to be seen and maybe start looking for another OB.

your ob or the sono tech at your ob's office can absolutely measure cervical length. its done with an internal sono.
they should also be doing an internal to make sure you are not dilated.

Re: UPDATE- need more advice, pls what to do? need advice
just talked to the dr. he wants me to take tylenol first and see if it helps. I must be losing it, but the issue is not the pain at this point, i want to make sure baby is ok. So his approach is to relax and he told me that we should not open the can of worms. Even stitches are not proven to help. Anyhow i told him that i have high levels of anxiety and need to know. So he said that they do it at the hospital better than at his office, so i am going tomorrow morning to radiology unit. thank you all for advice. I feel like i am losing it.
I did not go thru fertility treatments, m/c, tears and heartbrake to sit back and do nothing.

Good luck tommorrow hun I think it's time to start looking for another OB. Your current OB just seemed a bit too dismissive about all of this for my liking. You want someone that will take ALL your questions seriously and will do anything to reassure you.

I am crossing my fingers for you! Can you go to radiology unit or ER now instead of waiting til tomorrow? I don't like this guy's attitude and think that once you get on the other side of this, you should look for a new dr

Re: UPDATE- need more advice, pls what to do? need advice
I understand not wanting to open a can of worms, but this is for your own peace of mind. Maybe I'm wrong, but my OB measures my cervix through regular sonos, not internal. Can he just give you a regular sono to make sure all is okay right now?

Re: UPDATE- need more advice, pls what to do? need advice
IMHO I don't understand a Dr. who "doesn't want to open a can of worms" That makes no sense to me.
I would think that's exactly what a Dr. would want to do!
Its true that cerclages aren't proven to work. They also haven't been proven *not* to work.
I don't think that they should rush to do a cerclage, but I'd think he'd be open to at least having you come into the office to check things out. Like I said before there are other options.
I'm glad you pushed him, and that you have an appointment tomorrow morning.
I know exactly how you feel right now after having gone through the struggle of IF.
I hope everything is ok!

Re: UPDATE- need more advice, pls what to do? need advice
Are you seeing a PeriNatologist?
I see Dr. Kofinas and I thank God for him. I'm on bed rest at 32w 4d for a shortened cervix. I'm on medication for it, too. At about 17 weeks, a cerclage would be a possibility for a short cervix.
He's not in my insurance network, but I just paid the deductible and that's it. He takes whatever else my insurance pays. He's worth every penny just to know we're in good hands.
I don't know the details, but I don't like the "there's not much we can do to stop labor" comment. NOR do I like the "next appointment in 3 weeks" thing. I would be a nervous wreck - and that's not healthy either.
In the meantime - HYDRATION is so important for stopping any possible contractions. The uterus is a muscle and when you're dehydrated, muscles contract - including the uterus. Drink like you've never drank before!
My perinatologist also put me on indomethacin to stop contractions and procardia for anti-hypertension... whatever that means. I really don't question him and totally trust him. He measures my cervix every week at this point. When I'm on meds and bedrest, I do much better.
I wish you luck, but if I were you, I might look into another doctor - or at least an added specialist.
By the way... my doc is Dr. Pillitteri who I LOVE and TRUST. He is who referred me to Dr. Kofinas.
Good luck!

Re: UPDATE- need more advice, pls what to do? need advice
Your doctors response made me and
This was my motto while pregnant....No regrets...I did not care what I thought the dr might think because ultimately, if something went wrong, who we deal with the heartache...me, not them
Do exactly what YOUR gut tells you to do...and dont worry about the dr...and honestly, if it were me, and a dr said that to me...I would call another dr today...tell them ur experience with this dr and what he said, and im sure they will get u in if you r planning to switch drs

Re: UPDATE- need more advice, pls what to do? need advice
I dont even understand him. They can measure your cervix immediately through a sonogram Anyway, I just wanted to say that with dd#1 she was VERY high which scares me bc this one is VERY low. I would have thought like you are, that there was something wrong. Guess what...not a thing. Baby is fine. Cervix is normal. I have to pee just about every 15 min bc it is so low. * Oh and while hes at doing his sono, tell him to look for the fibromo (sp?). This guy sounds ridiculous. At 17 weeks its a baby.
