**UPDATE**CLomid to Injectibles or IUI to IVF, looking for some wisdom
**Update** So I saw the Dr tonight and she said we can do injectibles, but with DH's sperm, IVF might get us PG quicker. She said DH has slow swimmers (which was mentioned, but I gues I just focused on the high numbers) I will have to change plans to do IVF (I have a plan that covers the procedure but not the meds and the Dr. said the meds run about $2000, (I thought it would be a LOT more!))
So we're going to try 1 cycle with injectibles (low doese Gonal F) and see how my body responds. I have the option to convert to IVF, if it has to go that way, but I want to give it at least 1 shot and in the mean time I will figure out what restrictions I have on changing my plan.
Wish me luck ladies, I am suoer nervous, but excited at the same time!
Backround: DH-37, me- 34 (almost)
We have been trying for 2 years, seeing the RE since Feb. We have done 4 IUI's with Clomid and 1 IUI w/o meds. I am going to see the Dr on Thursday to talk about what our next plan of action is.
Do you think they'll switch me to injectibles (4 cycles of Clomid and I got 100-1, 150-1 (missed surge), 100-3, 100-1, kinda small. So I am thinking they'll move me to injectibles to see if we can get my numbers up. But I am going to let her know that I really would only like to do this for a thorough, but short amount of time. I am doing nothing but getting older.
What are your experiences with switching protocols. Just looking for some enlightenment! TIA ladies!!!!

Re: CLomid to Injectibles or IUI to IVF, looking for some wisdom
I guess it couldn't hurt to do IUI w/ injectables next cycle and in the meantime, find out what u have to do before IVF. DH and I both had to get some extra testing done, see a social worker, etc...it took a cycle or two to get all of the IVF "tasks" done and we were finally able to start the IVF cycle. That way, it can also give u some time to mentally prepare to make the leap to IVF (if the injectable cycle doesn't work). Plus, the injectables may be just the boost that u need to get some more follies.
Hope your appt goes well on Thursday!

Re: CLomid to Injectibles or IUI to IVF, looking for some wisdom
Here's my 2 cents.
I have unexplained infertility. Husband's stuff is great. We actually get complements on it.
I did Clomid 100mg X 1 without IUI. No idea how many follies.
Clomid 100mg X 1 with 2 big follies, IUI.
Clomid 150 mg X 1 with 2 big follies, IUI.
RE says 2 follies are OK, but NOT great response. SO, I went to:
Gonal F Stim at 112.5 and then 150 (I thing mg). Sad to say...I started out with a TON of follies & then had a really dominant one suppress them all. So 1 huge follie, IUI.
My RE says last cycle was a fluke. He was bon-a-fide suprised. He said it was up to me... another IUI vs IVF. I said I wanted to move along to IVF. If no preg. from this last IUI, I'm moving on & he can stim the follies to death.
IVF is more $$ and more invasive & I really didn't want this to go that far, BUT I get the feeling that something is really wrong being that I had 2 follies at least 2 times (probably that 1st time too), my HSG looked great, and sperm looked great. If it was a sperm motlity issue, I would do another IUI.
I'm also done with the pain of failed IUI cycles. I can't take much time from work & do a balancing act with the hours & then to get a neg after 2 good looking follies (twins in my eyes). It's just

I would go to injectables next.
I think that injectables are a good way to at least see how your body responds to the stims - you're pretty much going to use the same ones for IVF anyway, KWIM?
Also, IVF is emotionally and financially draining! I always looked at it as a "last resort" and when we finally did it and it failed... I was completely devastated.
I would do probably 2 cycles of IUI with injectables and then decide what you want to do from there.

Re: CLomid to Injectibles or IUI to IVF, looking for some wisdom
FWIW my RE kinda scared me from going to injectibles from Clomid. He said you have much less control over everything as opposed to IVF and there is a much greater risk of multiples, whereas with IVF you control how many embies go back in. But like someone else said IVF is also much more time-consuming and invasive so it's really what you feel more comfortable with.
This is my second IUI on Clomid and I am seriously considering moving on to IVF if this one doesn't work.

This is only true IN PART.
You can't control how many follies you will produce, but you can control how many you will trigger with... just like with Clomid.
It's not like it's crazy and unmonitored and they just send you on your way... You have lots of follie scans!
In our first IUI with injectbales, we only had 2 mature follies - many people get those results from Clomid too, so we were not nervous about a high risk of multiples.
The second time around, we had 18+ follies - so we converted to IVF (or we could have just chosen to cancel the cycle).
With any of these kinds of fertility treatment, you're at risk for multiples - whether it's Clomid, injectables, or IVF.
Even in IVf... if you put back one, it can split and you can have twins - there are no guarantees, KWIM?

I agree, it's good to try injectables first so they know how you respond before moving on to IVF. For IUI w/ injectables, most docs will cancel if you have more than 4 or 5 mature follicles, in order to reduce the risk of high order multiples.

Is IVF covered by insurance? If it is I guess I would try one cycle with injectibles and in the meantime prepare for IVF. I haven't done IVF so I can't speak form experience but it just seems like the chances of getting pregnant are so much higher with IVF.

Thanks, this is what we're planning on doing. I just found out that I can change my insurancce in October and it will be effective on 1/1/2010. So we're going to do IUI after IUI (let's pray one of them gets converted!!! ) until the new year! Thanks for all the good vibes ladies!
