*Updated AGAIN at bottom* No sonogram at 8 weeks?
My doctor said that they only take blood at the first appt. - no sonogram. Is that normal?

Re: No sonogram at 8 weeks?
I guess it must depend on the practice.
I had always thought that a sono was done at around 8 weeks to determine size/due date (as LMP isn't always reliable). Thats what my doctor's practice does.

That's what I thought too. She said they could tell how far along I am from the blood tests. Does that sound right???

Re: No sonogram at 8 weeks?
I didn't get one from my OBGYN until the Ultrascreen at 13 weeks.
My practice only does two - 13 weeks and 20 weeks.
Any additional ones are only done if they suspect a problem.

Re: No sonogram at 8 weeks?
I've never heard of no sonso at 8 weeks. I have gotten one at all 3 of my appointments thus far, including 5 ,9, and 13 weeks.

Re: No sonogram at 8 weeks?
No sono until 20 weeks!?! I would insist on the Ultrascreen then (usually at 13 weeks). What if there are two in there?!

That's ridiculous!!!! I had an internal at 6 wks. to make sure there was something there, another at around 10 wks, my ultrascreen at 12, level II at 20 wks and the Level I at 26 wks.

What's the difference between an ultrasound and an ultrascreen?

Re: No sonogram at 8 weeks?
did you get one around 6 weeks? Usually they do one when you go @ 6-9 weeks along to "date" the pregnancy, or measure the fetus to see how far along it measures compared to your last AF.

Re: No sonogram at 8 weeks?
That's riduculous no 1st sono! HCG numbers (pg hormones) ALONE, cannot tell you how many weeks are since the numbers have such a HUGE range, you need the numbers and a sono to gauge time along.
WIth DD is had a sono at 7 weeks, 12 weeks, 20 weeks and a growth at 32 weeks
So far with this pg, i only had 1 sono at 7 weeks, no sono at 12 weeks, my next one is at the end of this month i will be about 17 weeks.
I didn't opt for the screening tests with either pg.
If i were you, i would change practices. Maybe she didn't do cause of your insurance?

It may also be your insurance. Some insurance companies only cover one ultrasound.
And if that is the case, they wouldn't do an ultrascreen unless the doctor thought they may need to.
I didn't have one at my first OB appointment, but I had a separate appointment with a tech who did one a week later. Then Ihad the ultrascreen at 13 weeks and my ultrasound at 19 weeks. I don't even know if I get another one since my dr. doesn't do them in her office.

Re: No sonogram at 8 weeks?
WOW!!!! First one at 20 weeks?!?!? Check your insurance. If insurance allows more, then I say look elsewhere.
My first appointment is where they took blood and a minor exam at 6 weeks. That's when they answered a lot of questions and put me on pre-natal vitamins. My first sono is at 8 weeks. Then I have another sono at 12, then at 20.

Re: No sonogram at 8 weeks?
I know a few women who only had one sono their entire pregnancy. 20 weeks.
It all depends on your office and your health.

Re: No sonogram at 8 weeks?
I had HCG blood test and sono at my first appointment, I was 5 weeks, earlier than I thought.
Then, 1 week later to make sure everything was OK, I had another sono.
I have an appointment tonight, 9 weeks (earlier than usual because I will be away for 2 weeks), I don't know if there will be another sono.....
That's really late for me to be comfortable that everything is OK. I would insist on one earlier, remember, it's your baby.

Re: No sonogram at 8 weeks?
I finally heard back from the Dr. They don't do a sono before 20 weeks unless the Dr. determines there is a problem. They also do not do an ultrascreen unless the Dr. thinks there is a problem.
Should I find a new Dr.?? I recently moved to FL and don't like the first OB/GYN I went to, so I called this new practice when I found out I was pregnant. I've never been there.
I just called my insurance and they cover 2 sonograms, and any additional sonograms need to be medically necessary and need to be precertified, but they are covered too.

Re: *Updated Dr. response at bottom* No sonogram at 8 weeks?
I didnt get my first sono until I was 17 weeks....and that was my level 2...as long as everything is OK and they do not suspect anything it is fairly common

Ok, that makes NO sense. the ultrascreen is done at 12 weeks before an AFP and it is more accurate. How would a doctor think there was a problem if he can't see the fetus growing????
I would find a new doc
