UPDATED AT BOTTOM OF PAGE--Would you stay in the surgical room?

DD is having a procedure done tomorrow and on the pre-op paperwork they stated that one parent can stay until DC is sedated and then it said occasionally a parent can remain throughout the procedure (the procedure should take around 10 minutes).
Would you stay throughout the procedure?

Re: Would you stay in the surgical room?

Honestly-NO. I would let the doctors do their job to the very best of their abilities and I don't think the mother's presence in the room would help them in that! I would definitely stay there until she is fully sedated though.

Thank you for your honest opinion. I am definitely going to stay with her until she is fully sedated but I am debating about staying during the procedure. I watched an online video of the procedure and I just dont know if I will can handle it only because it is DD but I feel like I should be there for her.

Re: Would you stay in the surgical room?

If you don't think you will be able to handle it well, then I would say, no, it's probably best you aren't in the room. Even if you hold it together, you will probably feel very anxious, and it might put the doctors on edge. Being that she will be sedated, she won't know the different whether you're there or not, so I think you'd be better off not being there, especially since it is such a quick procedure.

Absolutely NOT.

I'd be very surprised if they were OK with you staying in the room.

Even if everything goes well, Drs "act" differently when there is a family member in the room.

God forbid things go wrong, you want them to be focused on YOUR child... not you.

No way. I would probably freak out or pass out and would only cause a distraction.

no.
I am in the medical field and can probably handle seeing almost any procedure done.....but I feel like it is an un-needed stress on the doctors and nurses who need to be 100% focused on my child. JMO

Good luck to your DD!!

Re: Would you stay in the surgical room?

DS had surgery for a blocked tear duct and it was only 15 minutes - however, watching him get sedated was bad enough. I don't think I could have stayed the 15 minutes!

I agree.

Also - be careful what the drs office says versus what the hospital says. They told my BFF she could stay with her 3yo, and the day of the procedure the hospital said "no way" and they were shocked that the drs office would even give her the option.

Re: Would you stay in the surgical room?

Nope and no.

When AJ had her tubes put in they walked away with her a little dosey but not eye droppy yet. Fine by me. She wasn't upset she was going away from me. Again fine by me.

They put her under and did the procedure 'back there'. They were done in 10mins and I was by her side again.

I believe knowing too much is NOT helpful. For us the procedure was done a million times over (including 3times on me) so I felt confident in what they were doing. I would have stressed more, worried more, etc. None of that helps her. I would have been an exhausted lump of nothingness (and trust me I was already nearly there to begin with).

Nope. Sometimes we need to trust the docs.

There as no need for me to be there. I was not there. I don't regret it one bit.

I can not imagine what its like to see my child slowly go under. I'm paranoid enough to start having very dark thoughts at that point (which I won't go into here as to not scare anyone else). So that's a real no go for me. Out of sight means I can think things but KNOWING is so much worse. Because no matter what I *Think* I can always counter with "its going to be fine, etc" if I SEE it then it bothers me too much.

If she's awake, it different. I was there for her VCUG procedure. I was calm and cool. I can handle her screams, her wiggles, her tears. I can't handle helplessness and drugged.

I was never so happy to see her toss a fit as when I walked into her recovery. Chat Icon

Same here. I wouldn't have wanted to be there for the whole procedure.

Re: Would you stay in the surgical room?

For all the people who are saying it would add more stress to the doctors and nurses....I dont think they would allow it if they felt it was more stressful for them. So if they are saying it's ok for a parent to stay then obviously the feel comfortable with it. Having said that, I would stay for it. DC might not know if you are there or not but I would. It's a personal decision for everyone though. Chat Icon

No, I would not/could not stay. My daughter had 2 procedures one at 9 months the other at 3. My husband went in with her until she was sedated then came out. That was hard enough.

ETA: Its a personal decision.

UPDATE:
Well, we are home and DD is doing great.
They let me go in the operating room to stay with her until she was fully sedated (that was really hard Chat Icon ) They did not even give me the option to stay and honestly I feel like that was for the best.
Now here is hoping that this procedure works and DD's eyes will be all better Chat Icon Chat Icon
