UPDATED Does a strep culture ever come back positive....
When the rapid strep is negative?
My girls have had fevers (at times topping out at 104) and sore throats since Friday night. We took them to urgent care yesterday (Sunday) and they ran a rapid strep. Negative.
Today, my 5 year old DD is SOBBING that her throat hurts. Inconsolable. Can't swallow. I finally get her to open her mouth wide enough for me to see in her throat and it is bright red with little white pus-y blisters all over it. Looks like strep to me, and I've seen a lot of strep with my older DS.
So my question is, can the 48 hour culture come back positive when the rapid strep is negative?
Also, DH, in his infinite wisdom gave DD a spoonful of honey for her throat right before we went to urgent care. Could this have messed up the results?
UPDATE: So, the girls weren't getting any better, still running fevers, etc. I took them to the regular ped this morning.
Ped says they both have the dreaded Coxsackie virus, and Julie (the almost-2-year-old) has a pretty bad sinus infection. He prescribes an antibiotic for that. OK.
We get home, and I'm not even in the door 10 minutes when the doctor from the Urgent Care place we went on Sunday call.s Julie's throat culture came back positive.
So Julie has Coxsackie, strep, AND a sinus infection. Good lord, no wonder this child is cranky!!!
I called the ped and told him what happened, and he said that the antibiotic he prescribed should treat the strep as well, and that if she wasn't much improved after 2 days bring her back.
I don't usually say this, but..... FML. I am so done with sick kids.

Re: Does a strep culture ever come back positive....
I had DS tested for Strep when he first got sick and it was negative. When he didn't get better two days later, we brought him back and they tested him again and it was positive. I would def bring them to the Ped

Yes - when I was younger, the rapid test always came back negative and I always ended up having strep (they would submit the test that took a couple of days as well).

Yes. It happened once for me and once for DS.

YES!!! It definitely can happen which is why they do both the rapid and the culture. Although some don't which I don't agree with and other doctors only do the culture which I think is like 99% accurate - the rapid is only like 92% correct the ped told me recently. When I was little I would often come up negative on the rapid but positive on the culture - so it is definitely possible.

DD had this when she was younger - and it wasn't strep but coxsackies - she had 104 and the worst sore throat of her life. So if the strep is negative then that could be it (my ped does an automatic culture when they do the rapid - which is the smart thing to do).

Yes, when DD was 3 months the rapid came back negative but the culture came back positive.
But, the white blisters are a classic symptom of coxsackie.
