UPDATED! HELP (another post re: STAR)
I got the letter everyone is talking about in the other post. Normally, the fact that so many others are getting this letter too would calm my nerves, but...
I called the automated line and entered all of my information I am concerned though because it didnt say my Star was approved for 2012-2013.
We bought the house in April 2011 and I filed a new star application as soon as I got my deed (I think May sometime).
I am scared that it wasnt approved and that we are going to be charged higher taxes this year now! Wouldn't my STAR application filed in May have been approved by now- esp since we are starting a new tax year????
I cannot for the life of me get anyone on the phone. Chat Icon
Not sure what to do...anyone have any recommendations?

We bought our house in July and applied for the star in August, sent them our deed and everything. We got a call in September, they said they received it and it wont be in effect until 2013. In 2013 that is when we will see our star exemption. Might be the same case for you too.

did you receive a copy of your tax bill? I am not sure if all towns are the same, but here in Islip town it tells you how much your star is right on the tax bill/receipt.
Sorry I am not of much more help, I filed for the Star when we bought our house back in 2006 and have not had a problem or had to do anything further.

No because Previous owners had the enhanced star (they were seniors) plus a veterans discount...I knew we were not getting those exemptions. We are paying the taxes through our mortgage and Since we closed we were paying taxes with no exemptions.
Have you looked at www.mynassauproperty.com, shows the break down of general and school taxes and from previous years.

We are paying the taxes through our mortgage as well. The previous owners also were seniors and veterans. I am almost positive that since we started paying mortgage in June that we have been paying based on NO EXEMPTIONS as well .
My concern is that if my paperwork for Star that I sent in May didnt go through, then we wont get any discount and I wont be able to try and apply again until for 2014 since we are now passed the January deadline for 2013

Called my mortgage company because I know we have been paying based on the taxes without the exemption and they stated that in March we will get a check (I guess for reimbursement for the extra we paid) and our payments will go down as well.

Possibly, I am not sure. However, if the people who owned the house before you had the Star reduction, then according to the woman I talked to today, you should be given as a courtesy. What might happen is that your mortgage company will be giving you a check for the retroactive discounted amount. I would def call the county assessment and keep calling until you get someone on the phone. And then, once they tell you the same thing they told me (which I imagine they will) call your mortgage company (that is if you pay your taxes through your mortgage) to find out when you will be seeing the discount and if you will be getting retroactively.
