Update p.2- Re: Kitty might have cancer...devastated.
We had him home for a day, then he became listless and wouldn't move except to use the litter box. He ate like a pig when i brought it to him. So we brought him back to the hospital and his anemia was worse. They kept him overnight for another transfusion. It's like the tumor is bleeding and until the medications can shrink the tumor, the bleeding won't stop. How many times can we do this? We're emotionally done. Forget the fortune this is costing us as well.
What's so difficult is that the vet was so confident that he would do well with treatment. We didn't think the anemia (or the bleeding) would be such a problem.
We're heartbroken. Yesterday was our 10th wedding anniversary, too. We spent it crying. :(

Aw thank you. I didn't mean to upset anyone. I really appreciate your concern. We've got him home again and he's weak and very low key. But still gobbling up his food when I bring it to him. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

I think we finally turned the corner. He ate a LOT yesterday and his poop is now brown!! It was black from the bleeding for so long, to see it brown was a celebration! (we'll take what we can get). He is still pretty low key and lethargic, but after bringing him in for a followup appt today, and finding out his pcv (red blood cells) has gone up 1% from Saturday, made our day! That means he's most likely not bleeding anymore and he hopefully won't be anemic anymore.
The bad news is that he's diabetic now too. So insulin 2x a day. We see the oncologist on Wed, so maybe more good news then.
I'm not jumping for joy yet, b/c the kitty still has cancer, but at least with his improvement this week, we know we dont have to make that dreaded decision for a while.

After 2 days of steady blood levels, they dropped again. So he's
bleeding again and anemic. The internist consulted with the oncologist
and he gave us the choice. I know what that choice is. My husband
works in the city and is on his way home right now and then we're
going back to the hospital to say good-bye. Thi s wait is going to be an eternity. I'm numb and nauseous.

Mikey is gone. We got to the hospital at about 3:30 and they brought him out to us in the exam room. He looked terrible and his breathing was labored. That told me right then and there that we made the right decision. We hugged him and kissed him and pet him for at least 10 minutes and said our goodbyes. He started purring when I hugged him, which made me feel good.
We chose to be there when they did the injection and it was so quick. He finally looked at peace. We realized tonight that we lost Mikey over a month ago. He had not been himself at all since then and we didn't have the same "baby kitty" that we always did.
The feeling in my gut and hole in my heart will never heal. He was with me every step of the way, in the kitchen in the morning, at the door when I got home from work, at our side while we ate dinner, next to us while we watched TV, behind me while I was on the computer, and in between us when we slept. Everywhere I look is a reminder of how happy he made us. I've lost my parents, my baby, and now my baby kitty. It doesn't feel any different.

My heart is breaking for you If there is ANYTHING you need, please let me know. I can't imagine what you are going through. I know that you gave sweet Mikey the best life possible and he'll always be a part of you. Think about all the joy he brought you and the joy YOU brought HIM. He was lucky to have you for as long as he did.
I'll be up at work tomorrow - maybe I'll see you there, if not, definitely next week.
