**updated**PLEASE read I feel like a horrible Mommy

Ive posted recently that we are having sleep issues with Alyssa - she wakes in the middle of the night and wont go back to sleep unless I take her in our bed w/ us. (she is 1 yr old BTW) So, Ive been doing this for abut a month because I dont know what else to do. Well...

At 5 AM I heard BOOM....my poor baby fell off the bed and hit her head (I have hard wood floors to make it worse) She seems ok....shes been playing and acting "normal" all morning... (after about 20 min of crying she stopped) I feel horrible. Its my fault that she got hurt. My DH has been telling me to stop bringing her in bed and hes mad at me for not listening...

do I need to take her to the dr? How would I know if something was wrong?

I dont know what the heck to do now. I cant bring in her in bed anymore. I think shes too young for a toddler bed (?? yes?? no??) She sleeps horribly in her crib.

I feel so guilty. and sad. and I dont know what to do...parenting is a hard job at times.

****UPDATE I just wanted to thank all of you ladies for the hugs and advice - you are all wonderful! Aly did fine today - she slept a lot due to loosing sleep last night but otherwise was her happy self. thank goodness....
Now the fun part begins tonight because I wont be taking her in bed withy us when she wakes in the middle of the night, UGH wish me luck

Re: PLEASE read I feel like a horrible Mommy

The EXACT same thing happened to me last week. I was beside myself. Once I held her, she was fine. She got a bruise on her forehead but other than that she was fine.

I was crying my eyes out and felt horrible about it.

She'll be ok. Did she bang the front or back of her head?

As far as her crib, I think maybe you should bring her in when she's the most tired.....rub her back and then slowly move out of her room. You may have to do this a few times....eventually they learn to sleep in there.

She might be a little young for a toddler bed. Do you feel like she can climb out of the crib? I wouldn't make the move just yet...maybe as she gets closer to 2.

Don't worry! It happens to all of us!!! Honestly! YOu are doing a great job! Honestly. IF she is eating and drinking and seems herself, she probably is fine. But if it would make you feel btter by taking her tot he doctor, by all means, do so!

first...do NOT feel guilty or like a bad parent. It happens, and I can't even tell you half the time what happens when you wake up in a sleep fog.....
You need sleep, she needs sleep.

Would you/have you done CIO? This is the time where they learn their sleeping habits...does she sleep horribly in the crib because she knows that you will come and get her??

Although DH and I will go to Bella in the middle of the night to lay her back down and cover her, she knows that there is no out of the bed until 7 am...

You may have to sleep-train her all over. If you think she isn't ready for a toddler bed, you are probably right...Bella is almost 2 and I still don't think she is ready fora bed...

If you think she is fine and just got a bump and bruise, I think she'll be just fineChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon don't worry, we all have been there and feel this way...

Re: PLEASE read I feel like a horrible Mommy

Can she get herself into trouble in her room, or is it pretty baby proofed? Maybe you should get her one of those little travel fold out beds andlet her sleep on the floor on that. If she takes to it, then you may want to switch her into a bed with rails.

We had this problem with DD about 2 months ago. Finally we couldn't take it anymore. We let her cry anc cry and eventually she went back to sleep.
It was due to teething too - so we have her tylenol a couple of times too. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Chat Icon You're not horrible at all. I had an incident months ago where DD fell off a bed when I turned my back for a second. She wasn't mobile yet & I put her in the middle of a double bed. I still don't know how it happened. I felt awful. I didn't take her to the doctor - we were out of town and it was 10:00 at night. DH thought I should have. He made me feel even worse. I just watched her very closely. If it will make you feel any better, then you should take her. I'm sure she's fine. Chat Icon

Thank you for your kind words. DH made me feel even worse than I already did.
We have been doing CIO at bedtime because she wouldnt go to sleep on her own - its working. she only cries for aminute and falls alsleep - this doesnt seem to be working in the middle of the night though - she cries harder and louder. any specific way to handle CIO when its in the middle of the night??

Does she have some kind of security blanket or stuffed animal? Maybe if you introduce something like that it may help. DS sleeps with a stuffed monkey. He looks for it when he gets in the crib and it signifys sleepy time. Whenever he wakes up he tends to throw the monkey out of his crib as if to say, "ok, sleepy time is over, come and get me."

she too has a favorite stuffed monkey - she has never slept withit though. she hugs it & carries it around during the day - maybe if I put it in with her at night. I can try, Im willing it try anything. she is teething too so this is not helping - she is cutting FOUR top teeth. CIO is working soo perfect at bedtime just not in the middle of the night.

I should have listened to DH though and not started with her in our bed - My poor baby hit the floor so hard

first, boo to your DH....like it we aren't hard enough on ourselvesChat Icon Chat Icon
As for CIO at night, maybe the first thing you need to do is establish that she will be staying in her crib no matter what...we used to go on after 5-ish minutes and lay her back down, give her the binkie, and her monkey...
middle of the night is hard, but the few times we really had to employ it she never went past 15 minutes (but they are NO fun, I am not going to lie)
like I said, when she is teething we'll go to her and lay her back down and she usually is right back asleep.(we gotta stop that soon ourslelvesChat Icon )

She is fine, kids are VERY resliliant! Like a pp said, if she is eating and drinking you have nothing to worry about.

I don't have experience with this yet, but I do know my friend put her daughter into a toddler bed at about 16 months old. She was pregnant with number 2 and she wanted to make the transition easier and earlier (the baby was born when her daughter was 20 months old) and she did really well in the toddler bed. It was very low to the ground and had rails. Plus you could get the soft rails for the bottom of the bed.

Chat Icon Chat Icon we've all been there!

Aly has fallen off the bed, the couch (she split her lip and was BLEEDING!) and has been knocked over by the dogs.

AS PER MY DR: kids need to fall a minimum of 8 FEET to sustain serious trauma.

Watch her behavior...if she appears sleepy, try to keep her awake in case of a concussion. If she begins vomitting, then go to the DR.

Call your Dr to give yourself peace of mind, but you are NOT a bad mother.

I would definitely give the stuffed animal a try. Luca only gets his in his crib, so I don't know if it will be different that she plays with hers during the day, but I have to assume that since she's so attached to it, that it can only help with soothing her to sleep.

If she's otherwise fine and wants to take a nap at her usualu time, then I wouldn't worry about it. Luca has never fallen off of anything, but he has fallen forward and cracked his head on the TV stand. He yelled for a few minutes and then went back to playing. I put him down for his regular nap and everything was fine. Chat Icon Chat Icon

DH's are always Monday morning quarterbacks until they experience something. I agree with Kelly, sometimes you're just so exhausted you need your sleep and if bringing them in to your bed is going to give you some rest, so be it. YOU'RE NOT A BAD MOMMY. It's an accident and they happen.

She's ok, next time, just put a pillow next to her so she doesn't fall out.

The reason I ask is.
Ali was napping for like 3 - 3 1/2 hours. Depending on what time she feel asleep.
We were having such problems with her sleeping through the night - I mean she was up and wanting to play Chat Icon Chat Icon
Anyway - I tried keeping her up until after her lunch (which is usually about 12:30-1:00) and then letting her nap then. Depending on how active her morning was, I am only letting her sleep about 2 - 2 1/2 hours. And if she goes to sleep at 2:00 - I will not let her sleep past 4:00.
We put her in for bed at 9:30 (actually this week, we have been trying for a little ealrier), but it has been working for us - it has been working for us.

WELL, Marcie - I was sort of thinking about this too - which is why I stopped letting her nap past 4 or so....but she is so cranky by 7 - - I try keeping her up but shes soo tired by 11 for a nap - maybe Ill try to strectch it till 12 and then she will make it through the day but be nice and tired for bed at night??(she goes to sleep about 8:30)

Based on her nap schedule, I would try putting her to bed earlier than 8:30. DS goes to sleep between 6:30-7:30. I have found that the later we put him to bed, the EARLIER he wakes up. It's like he doesn't get settled enough to sleep well. It's worth a try.
