*UPDATE*Flight was canceled :-((on bottom) with new question-Talk to me about flying with an infant (7mths)...

What do I need to bring...does anybody have a good checklist??

Also, may be a silly questionChat Icon ...

Can I bring his bottles (filled with filtered water) in my diaper bag/carry on??

I know that liquids aren't usually allowed unless packed in your luggage. Does that apply to baby's bottles????

I'm so nervous, leaving in less than a week. Also praying to the weather gods that the snow doesn't get in the way and cancel our trip next Thursday. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Talk to me about flying with an infant (7mths)...

DS was 9 months when we flew to St. Thomas. I, like you was a wreck. We decided it would be best to pay for an extra seat and bring his carseat on the plane, and for us, it was the best decision. DS is extremely active, and he would not rest unless he was strapped into the seat. As far as bottles were concerned, we bought water bottles after we checked in. Yes, it was expensive, but this way we didn't have to worry about dealing with bringing liquids on the flight. Definitely back things like books and baby toys that he hasn't seen before. Believe me, if I made it through that flight, anyone can.

Re: Talk to me about flying with an infant (7mths)...

Thanks...I'm not really looking forward to buying bottled water. I like the water room temperature for him and I don't want to get ripped off either. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Does anybody know If I can bring his bottles filled with water, or will they make me dump them out???

This is so annoying, and I haven't even started packing yet. Chat Icon

Brianne, I have flown with Sean twice in the past 2 months (once out of JFK and once out of Islip) and they are so lenient with baby items through security. I brought several bottles of breast milk in a cooler and they did not even bat an eye. I am sure you will be fine with the water already in the bottle. They were very understanding with everything.

Thanks D!!!

I'm just getting anxiety about this...add the "pending" snow and I'm a wreck.

I so can't wait to be in AZ with 70 degree weather...but it's getting there that's giving me heartburn. Chat Icon

I say try it. The worst that can happen is they make you spill it out and you buy water.

Re: Talk to me about flying with an infant (7mths)...

I remeber my sis in law saying they made her take a sip of the water- I guess to make sure it wasn't some explosive? But this was a few years ago.
Kind of odd- but effective I guess.

They usually have room temp water available if you can't get through.

I had no problems bringing RTF through last week in NY but, on the way back, since the RTF bottle was closed - they made me go through a pat down in Phoenix (it was either DH or I and he walked away and ignored the TSA lady so I had to do it).

Re: Talk to me about flying with an infant (7mths)...

I was able to bring bottles with water in them, I had the formula there to show them.

You will have to take the baby out of the stroller and put him through the metal detector. Don't put shoes on him if you don't have to, you'll have to take those off jut like yours.

DS was 9 months old when we went on a plane. He fell asleep as we took off down the runway. He must have like the hum of the plane, so you might get lucky and not have to entertain him!

Also, you get to board early since you have a child. You'll be able to check the stroller at the gate, so I'd recommend having him in the stroller while you're waiting for the plane.

It figures that we are headed to Phoenix as well. Thanks for the info, I am feeling better about this now.

Thanks so much!! I have one of those cheap umbrella strollers and plan on checking at the gate. My DS never has shoes on. I was just wondering when I should be putting shoes on him, but figure since he doesn't walk or crawl yet not to worry. Score 1 for me on waiting!!

DS is such a great baby and he very rarely cries...I'm hoping the plane ride doesn't change that. He just started taking a binky again recently which I'm happy about b/c he can use it on the plane for his ears. I hope he sleeps, b/c he is super active and doesn't normally nap during the day. We are taking an 8am flight out.

Are you flying JetBlue? They were great with DS. We had a rough ride out there - he was starting to get sick and was in the process of getting a molar.

They were great!

On the way back, he was perfect. Unfortunately - the annoying people that sat around us who commented because he cried a few times were not on that flight.

ETA - DS has no problems iwth the take off and landing - he enjoys seeing all of the people on the plane as well. He's super active. ON the way there,w e did a lot of walking up and down the aisles and on the way home, he played at the seat. He slept about an hour and a half each way.

Re: Talk to me about flying with an infant (7mths)...

We took bottled water in his diaper bag. Security did not even touch the diaper bag and let us straight through. They didn't search it both times we flew with DS.

We flew to the Caribbean and we actually packed bottled water in our checked suitcase. I think that was going overboard but I was overly cautious. I really didn't want DS getting a stomach virus in the caribbean. We were staying on an all inclusive and I didn't trust the bottled water they'd provide at the resort. In hindsight, I think I was silly.

Flying Southwest. It sux that people had to comment, like you can control a little baby on an airplane. Don't they understand at all that it's not predictable how a child will react. This is what makes my blood boil. I'm sorry you had a hard time with that. Chat Icon

Do you need a car seat if you buy them their own seat? How old do they have to be to just sit in the regular seat with the seat belt?

Re: Talk to me about flying with an infant (7mths)...

I've flown Southwest 7 times with DD (10.5 months). They are incredible and so nice!

5 times I flew alone with her. They are so helpful with everything!

I brought a bottle of water for DD's sippy from home and they let me take it. They will let you bring water for formula, formula, food and snacks for the baby. They can also give you water on the plane.

I checked her stroller and carseat at the gate(I attach the snap and go to my stroller)

Also on the plane bring an extra change of clothes for DS, an extra shirt for you, extra diapers and wipes, toys and books (something new too to keep him engaged), snacks, bottle, blanket, pacifier if he uses it.

The anticipation is worse than flying! GL!

Thanks for all the good advice and things to remember. I'm feeling less anxious now that I know what to do. Luckily we are not bringing a car seat b/c my BIL is meeting us at the airport with one and then following us back to the airport on our way home and taking it back home with him. He is also supplying us with a PNP.

I will remember to pack all that stuff in my carry on.

Thanks again!!Chat Icon

I flew out of JFK in August and brought bottles with water in ti and a seperate container with formula. I just took it out of the diaper bag to show them and they were fine with it.

*UPDATE* with new question Re: Talk to me about flying with an infant (7mths)...

Hey Girls!

Okay so we are flying Thursday Morning (weather pending) on SouthWest. Since my DS will be only 7 mths we did not buy a separate seat.

We are traveling a total of 8.5 hours (with a layover). How does DS nap??

On our laps, right? Will they let me bring my boppy? What do you thing, should I go and get a baby carrier???

He is already over 20lb and nearing 30inches. He is tall and heavy.

HELP...I'm so anxious about this trip. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: *UPDATE* with new question-Talk to me about flying with an infant (7mths)...

He'll nap on your laps. We had an empty seat between DH and I so we laid him down for part of the trip but, he did most of his napping while I was holding him.

The carrier (like a Bjorn I'm assuming) was helpful when DS was small in getting through security but, we didn't use it on the last trip and had no issues.

They should let you bring the Boppy on the plane - but yo might not want to because I'm sure you are already carrying a lot of things!

Re: *UPDATE*(on bottom) with new question-Talk to me about flying with an infant (7mths)...

OUR FLIGHT WAS CANCELED!!!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

We are missing the Rehearsal dinner for our BIL and DH is in the wedding. We can't get a flight until late Friday afternoon.

So ******!!

Question:

We were supposed to be gone 8am tomorrow coming back 10:30 pm Monday night. Should we still take Chase now that our trip is cut by a day and half. It's a lot of traveling for such a short period of time.

Over 8 total hours each way for 3 days.
