Upper back and shoulder pain
I'll admit that I had poor posture before and rounded shoulder due to a, eh hum, a "blessed" chest area. Now that the ladies have gotten notably larger I have been getting horrible spasms in my back, despite how much water I drink. Is there a certain type of bra I should get? How can one manage pain like this when you can't take muscle relaxers? Ideas? Thoughts?

Re: Upper back and shoulder pain
i'm not sure how far along you are - but in the first trimester - it's a no no....so just keep that in mind.
I go to a 'massage envy' here in NJ and my dad goes to one in Commack (but they JUST opened one in Airport Plaza in Farmingdale). My dad is now addicted - he LOVES it there! They are a chain - but are all licensed massage therapists....

I'm still first trimester. How come we can't do massage?
Ugh. Any other ideas? The pain in my upper right back is horrible at times. Yesterday it felt like I was having a heart attack or something.

Re: Upper back and shoulder pain
by having a massage - you are forcing the 'bad junk' out of your muscles and putting it into your blood stream (in some technical sense, a friend of mine once described it as - a sore muscle is like a straw with sand in it - so by massaging, you are forcing that sand into your blood flow).... I'm no doctor - this is just what i was told and it makes sense....and it's also why after every massage - you are told to drink a lot of water...(to tinkle out the bad stuff).
maybe do a few google searches and get some stretches....ask DH to give you a light massage....
i hope you feel better!!!!!!

Re: Upper back and shoulder pain
there are a couple of stretches i do for my shoulders since i also have bad posture and the start of scoliosis in my upper back.
you'll need a corner of a room where the walls join..its a corner stretch. Stand so that your hands/palms are placed shoulder with apart on the wall, feet a few feet from the wall, push yourself in and hold for ten seconds. less if you're starting out. you'll feel a deep stretch in the shoulder blades. Remember to breathe...
you may also do this in a doorway...placing your forearm along each frame and push yourself in the doorway. hold for 10 seconds.
there is also a soft posture brace i have called SHOULDERS BACK. i forget where i ordered it, but if you google that you'll probably find it. Its made for horseback riders to train them to keep their shoulders back. I wear it alot under my coat so while i commute it helps my back. Its a soft brace so its rather comfortable. but you'll feel immediately how it brings your shoulders back to where they should be.
good luck!
