US schools and healthier food
I stumbled on this article on CNN, and found it really frightening...
Healthier food, drinks slowly enter US schools
The article states, and I quote: "Although Bravo has had to launch awareness campaigns to sell kids on the idea of Starburst- and Milky Way-flavored milk, consumers are "much more open-minded today as it relates to better-for-you beverages," Warren said."
It's all about the push to introduce healthier foods in the public schools. Great idea, right? But, someone explain to me, how in the world is Milky Way and Starburst flavored milk containing sucralose, any healthier than soda? That's DISGUSTING!!

Why not just make juice the most available beverage?
I just don't get the logic.....

Juice is LOADED with sugar. Take out all vending machines and put in a water fountain.

Yuck.
I think healthier foods in schools is a good start, but so much more needs to happen at home. I'm a teacher, and it blows my mind to see how some (actually, many) of my students eat- they walk into the building at the start of the day eating chips and drinking soda, and so many of them are already very overweight at 12-13. One healthy lunch is a start, but there's not enough health ed, not enough gym and too many bad habits.

Juice is LOADED with sugar. Take out all vending machines and put in a water fountain. There are some healthy juices that are not artificially sweetened. There are also vegetable juices as well.

They took whole milk out of the lunches in city schools and replaced it with fat free and 1% milk. The kids hate it and now I heard that some kids were having calcium deficiencies because of it. I guarantee that kids arent getting fat off of milk. Perhaps it is inactivity and poor food choices in and outside of school.
Juice can be just as bad as soda with all of the sugar and acid it contains. Pour it on your car and watch your paint job after a while.

They have a lot of natural sugar. Our ped. doesn't like them to have much juice, mostly water. We do a 25% juice 75% mix. I know the doctor's kids are school age and they also get very watered down juice.

Well my cousins from Europe never drink soda. one asked for a glass of OJ and I poured him some Tropicana. He took one sip and put it down. He said he couldn't drink it because it was too sweet.
And this is a kid who LOVES to come to the US for reases peanut butter cups!
