Re: Us Weekly's Breaking News on Heath Ledger

The NYC medical examiner has finished the toxicology report following the death of Heath Ledger, and has just ruled that the actor's death was caused by "acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine."

The NYPD found five different medications in Ledger's apartment after his death, including anti-anxiety medications alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium) and Lorazepam (Ativan). The sleeping medication zopiclone (Lunesta) and the sedative temazepam (Restoril) -- which is used by people with "debilitating insomnia" -- were also found.

So sad.

I still think we need to focus on the fact that he took Oxycodene which is a pretty heavy duty pain drug and one that he might have been addicted to.

I can't even imagine thinking it would be okay to take this much prescription drugs in one day...even if it was only a pill each. Most of these are heavy duty drugs.

Just breaks my heart to lose such a talented actor at such a young age. Chat Icon

what are each of these?

i have never even heard of them??

what are they for?

who would prescribe all of these - he had to have gone to different doctors, right?

Anti anxiety, pain killers and sleep.

He had a couple of scripts filled when he was shooting in London the weekend before he died. The rest were from the US.

oxycodone is oxycontin~for pain (I believe)
hydrocodone is vicodin

I think the others are for anxiety.

They said on CNN that since there was no suicide note, no suicide phone call, and it wasn't a massive dose of any of those drugs, that it was deemed accidental by the medical examiner. If he had taken a whole bottle of oxycotin, it could have been ruled a suicide, but instead, it just looks like he took the wrong combination of drugs.

I agree with this. I think *most* overdoses are suicide (remember Kurt Cobain's "accidental" overdose two weeks before he committed suicide). But since you can't prove its a suicide, and insurance would never pay up if its called a suicide, the medical examiners give the benefit of the doubt and call it accidental.

Re: Us Weekly's Breaking News on Heath Ledger

After reading EVERYTHING on Heath Ledger's life these past 2 weeks, I've learned much about him.
He had just split with Michelle in Sept 07 and was feeling down about not seeing his daughter. Plus he was filming the new Batman movie, in which he played the Joker...which is a dark character. It was said that Heath really got into his roles and became the character.
He was also in the UK filiming another movie that may or may not even come out. He didn't get much sleep at night and took two Ambien...which would only give him 2 hours of sleep.

Unfortunately he took all these combinations which affected him in a grave way. On the news it was said that the combinations of pills made his brain stem shut down and stop breathing.

I am sad for his family, Michelle and little Matilda who will never really know her father. I am sad for his death...however, I'm glad that it wasn't a death of illegal drugs. Thankfully he went away peacefully in his sleep...Chat Icon Chat Icon

from Yahoo-

The cause of death was "acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine," spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said in a statement.

The drugs are the generic names for the painkiller OxyContin, the anti-anxiety drugs Valium and Xanax, and the sleep aids Restoril and Unisom. Hydrocodone is a prescription painkiller.

Re: Us Weekly's Breaking News on Heath Ledger

It is sad to say that there are many people who are given all of these medications on a daily basis.

These drugs in combination with each other wil lnot cuase an accidental overdose. The person taking the drugs would have to increase the max amount per dose in order for this to happen.

I work at a pain mangement office and it not uncommon for the patients to be given all of these and others at the same time.

You hate to think that but I have to agree...I mean, maybe he didn't really want to kill himself but I agree that there's no way any intelligent adult would not understand that you cannot put all these drugs in your system together and not end up with bad results. I don't have to know the doses or exactly what each does to comprehend this. Poor guy!

FYI, not everyone leaves a suicide note or other signs of taking their own life. Plus...there were other people on the scene prior to the police being called which makes things stange as well.

Whatever the case, I hope he is at peace now.
